Pokemon

Ok I have a 7 1/2 year old son who is into Pokemon. Can someone please explain this shit to me? I really don't get it. He likes it so I wanna play with him but makes no sense to me. I'm talking about the cards.

cfusionpm 09-02-2013 01:11 AM

I never played the cards, but played the old red/blue gameboy games back in middle school. I randomly got Pearl at the recommendation of a friend in 2007 and found out there is a LOT more depth and strategy to building and battling a bench of pokemon. Sadly, I put over 400 hours into my game before calling it quits and coming back to the real world. I can't touch another game for fear of diving in like that again.

Kelbyat07 09-02-2013 01:19 AM

lol I remember collecting them but I never knew how to actually play with them.

Anthony 09-02-2013 01:58 AM

As far as I know, it's just a cute childish ripoff of Magic.

...which I don't know how to play. It's pretty much a strategic game of numbers.

Luis_GT 09-02-2013 02:06 AM

They still make those?? Last time I had a deck was back in 2003 I think...

Lol last time I had a deck was back in 1999!... Back then there were only 150 Pokemons!... Now... god knows how many they are up to...

They just keep evolving and devolving into many other variants of themselves... XD

Mim 09-02-2013 02:16 AM

The anime was / is amusing. Still going would you beleive.

sklimo 09-02-2013 02:26 AM

I still don't get it

ZionsWrath 09-02-2013 02:32 AM

Dat feel when I opened a first generation base booster pack and got a holographic venasaur.

Then I met this kid in school who mom worked for Wizard, and he had like 20 holo Charizard. He traded me one for a first edition Mr Mime holo

ahh the good old days...

DaJo 09-02-2013 02:34 AM

LOL Oh yes... can't forget them holos and 1st Editions... Still remember the "limited edition" Entei you get from watching that movie in theatres...

ZionsWrath 09-02-2013 02:35 AM

lol my cousin has a drawer full of those. I think there was a mewtwo or mew also from the first movie

AG3NT_5CARFAC3 09-02-2013 02:39 AM

So we throw cards at each other?

AG3NT_5CARFAC3 09-02-2013 02:39 AM

Also, what is this dragon ball Z?

n0m0h0s 09-02-2013 04:09 AM

No lie, the entertainment those cards brought were priceless. Even tho they were like $7 a booster. And dont get me started on Yu-gi-oh cards.....

ZionsWrath 09-02-2013 04:12 AM

I bought them 2.99 + tax back when they were released

YMAA 09-02-2013 04:27 AM

When I was a kid I collected the cards but never actually played the TCG...had no interest. I didn't know anyone still played it now.

Wo6M 09-02-2013 08:29 AM

Yugioh was the shit back in middle school. I played the gameboy games for the adventure aspect .
But Magic was the most strategic and mind numbing fun.

Buy a trainer kit if both of you need to really get a hang of the game. This is two half-decks layed out in order and tells you what to do on you turns. This will give you a good idea. Here is the most recent trainer kit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pokemon-TRAI...item2a30d05b01

Otherwise you might be OK with getting two starter decks. Cheap to get both of you going and has a rule book that pretty much lays everything out along with a playmat to help you get set-up and run the game mechanics.

Examples of the two newest ones:

You can pick these up at Target or Wal Mart the cheapest usually.

bakerr6 09-02-2013 10:16 AM

I use to collect and play this game. I'm pretty sure between myself and my brothers we probably had over 2k cards (we would play some kids around the neighborhood for keeps).

It was fun

ZionsWrath 09-02-2013 11:47 AM

This hater kid got mad once and sprayed some of my cards with a garden hose LOL

the game itself is just based off character actions and hit point/power levels that are on each card. the idea is that you put together you own deck with balanced cards. and you play your card versus your opponents card using the skills labeled on it. when I was young and these were popular the collecting aspect was more entertaining than playing. and at the time of first release I remember seeing in the comic book store a entire pieced together collection I believe 150 cards? and it was selling for $500!!! now I bet you could get it for $1.99 lol

husker741 09-02-2013 02:42 PM

They banned Pokemon cards at my elementary school cuz that's all we did all day and at recess. Then it became like drugs because we would smuggle them into school and trade them under the table. Ah, the good ole days.

Now its opposite, the largest group of players are over 18 and care more about playing. An average deck costs between 100-200. But the sets still cost a few hundred complete for some of the older stuff. I mean there are still ultra rates that cost a few hundred by them self. Lol

whitefrs 09-02-2013 05:09 PM

If it's good condition, I can't imagine it would be difficult to sell

lmao the card game sucks, the best way to dive into pokemon is to play the gameboy games. play the original pokemon red with a emulator on your computer. That way you can have cheats and etc.

or go to nwanime.com and watch a few episodes.

AG3NT_5CARFAC3 09-03-2013 04:49 AM

If Pokemon is McDonald's, is dragon ball Z Burger King?
