Brakes: Replacement Dust Boot?

Just curious if it's worth ordering some, my kit isn't old but I noticed one looks like it got eaten up:

Also any advice on a break bleeding kit/power bleeder?

I don't know about the boots, but as for brake bleeding: www.speedbleeder.com You'll want the SB1010, or the SB1010-SS for the stainless steel.

After 3 track days and yes Wilwoods.

Needs more cooling!!

My stock caliper dust boots look fine after 3 track days with actively cooled front rotors. Paging @Touge Factory

Same here; I've got 3 very hard days at Sebring on mine and they look mint, and I'm running the Touge Factory kit as well. I am also running titanium shims which helps keep the heat out.

How easy is it to install the backing plates? Seems like a pain in the rear!

With a big ass air impact wrench it wasn't bad, I just had to use an impact-safe flex extension to get the socket on all the hub bolts and carefully drive them off.

The backing plates went on according to the instructions and fit perfectly. The real pain in the ass is routing the hoses around the radiator!

http://hardbrakes.com/ manufacturers them, but I bought them through KNS Brakes for like $80 or $90. Worth it IMO.

I had no problem installing with hand tools; the backing plates were the easiest and most straight forward part of the install. I was very surprised how easy it was to remove the brakes and hub. A little wiggling of the hub and speed sensor was all it took. The directions they provide are great.

I just recommend an extra pint of blood on hand when trying to route the hose.

Here's my write-up and review, including comparison between ducts open and closed on track. So far I have 3 full days at Sebring on these brakes with the TF cooling kit.

Still searching KNS Brakes' website and I can't find them by selecting the BRZ as my car and the 2011-12 WRX. I found them for the STi but I know those have bigger Brembo calipers/pads.

Got a link to the right shims for our cars? Also what thickness did you get?

Any downsides? I might give them a try as I'm not eager to install cooling ducts at this point.

Yeah I just searched their site and didn't find them, but here is exactly what I got from KNS Brakes.

Ti Shim - 929 - .5mm - BRZ Titanium Brake Shims - 4 total shims - .5mm Thick
2013 Subaru BRZ 292mm Front Disc & Vented Rear Disc - front QTY: 1 PRICE: $81.99

Part # 929 - searched HardBrakes and found it:
http://hardbrakes.com/index.php?main...products_id=64

I'd either order from Hard Brakes or email KNS and find out why they dont have them listed anymore. sales@knsbrakes.com

Only downside is your bank account will have $81.99 less than it did before. They're great. I'll try to snap some pics of my dust boots - look absolutely brand new.

Is that the FR-S specific Wilwood kit?
I see 4 piston caliper... unless those are the rear calipers?

Keep in mind that lowering brake temps will not only lessen brake fade and improve brake performance, but it also extends the life of the pads and rotors.

It's a WRX kit modified with a different mounting bracket to fit.

The rotors are .5" bigger diameter than stock, but they are actually thinner than the stock rotors at .81"

There was a pretty heated (no pun intended) debate about this kit on another subforum where the Wilwood guys were saying they'd fail on track, but I'm not sure fried dust boots can be considered a failure: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32594

They definitely look to be struggling with heat on track and it makes sense that a thinner rotor would have less thermal capacity. The stock dust boots have met the same demise at these Wilwoods at the hands of @Dave-ROR at Sebring. He actually got the stock front brakes so hot that the rotors started delaminating material off them. See here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=156

Here were my Wilwood BP-30 pads after about 1K street miles (some spirited driving), properly bedded, and 2 sessions at VIR:

The heat might explain the molten lava that ruined my wheels.

Something tells me this is why your pedal was going soft :D

swift996 08-29-2013 08:30 AM

Perhaps race pads = too much heat for fluid and street pads = too much heat for pad

I'm going to try those titanium shims from hard brakes. My next track day and last one for the year (maybe) is at Summit Point - Shenandoah which doesn't have the same stress on the brakes that VIR does. I'm also carrying more speed (with supercharger) and moving my braking zones deeper as I gain more skill. I didn't expect getting this into the track at this point or I would have gotten a more solid brake kit. The kit works great under heavy street use, autocross, etc. Perhaps it reaches it's limit under extreme track conditions.

smbstyle 08-29-2013 05:14 PM

KNS updated their site and put the titanium shims back up:
