Choosing the Right Color

Now before I get started I want to acknowledge the fact that I understand how subjective a topic like choosing one's car color can be. I also know some of you simply went to the dealer and took whatever color they had at the time in their inventory.

However! I recently decided to preorder the 2014 BRZ and the only thing I'm not sure about still is which color to pick for the car. I've been torn between DGM and SWP, but I could be swayed to get WRB or the SSM as well. To be more specific, I really like the DGM as a color, meaning if I had to pick a laptop (insert random object) and all of the car's colors were available to pick from, I'd probably go with DGM. On the other hand, as for SWP, I really like the contrast it makes with the details of the car, the lights, fake air vents, and my favorite which is the ass, the bottom plastic piece where the reflector goes in contrast with the white... /drool
The WRB and SSM fall somewhere in between, being a darker tone than the white while still retaining that contrast, i find their disadvantages to be that for the former, it's a crowd favorite and seen lots, and for the latter, though it keeps "clean", it tends to hide the lines of the car a bit.

What are some strategies you guys used when nailing down the right color for yours?

Shevon 08-28-2013 08:43 AM

Its all about what color you can see yourself in for the long run, for me DGM over WRB. The BRZ looks best in those colors imo.

JJJ 08-28-2013 08:44 AM

I wanted to be Batman, but not *too* Batman, so I went with DGM.

Also, DGM was what was on the lot, and it was configured exactly how I wanted it. Between that or SSM, the DGM seems to bend more light, making it look shiny and clean both during the day and at night.

Also, Batman.

sklimo 08-28-2013 08:44 AM

I went with SSM b/c I love silver vehicles!!! Classic sporty color that looks clean even when not.

But I love all the colors the 86's offer

tobin 08-28-2013 08:49 AM

I picked SSM. My old '98 A4 was a similar color, and it aged very well, meaning it hid a lot of chips and blemishes. It's also a very "stealth" color, which I like. My last car, a '00 Legacy GT, was dark green, and looked terrible. I think Subaru paint (at least back then) is very thin compared to other manufacturers. In certain spots, the green was almost completely worn away. It looked terrible.

I love my SSM BRZ, it looks fantastic to me, especially at dusk or at night. It looks clean, even when it's not. My only gripe is that I wish the paint had more metal flake to it.

Turbowned 08-28-2013 08:54 AM

There is no wrong choice. My favorites are dark gray, crystal black, and wr blue. DGM pops like crazy in sunlight!

BlueDubbinTDI 08-28-2013 09:03 AM

To me: Light colors = less noticeable swirl marks, more you can do with vinyl wrap mods
Dark colors = can look meaner when modified correctly, basically all wheel colors ok

JimboE30 08-28-2013 09:58 AM

I was torn between WRB and SWP. I ultimately chose SWP because in 10...20 years, SWP will still look like a classic color. This is opinionated of course.

ericmpena 08-28-2013 10:10 AM

SWP! I love the contrast it makes on the car. (Black housing headlights, side vents, tinted windows) Also, SWP looks cleaner longer and it shows off the shape of the car nicely. Plus the Satin finish looks better than the glossy colors in my opinion.

whaap 08-28-2013 10:11 AM

If you can't decide between two or three colors, make a game of it. Tell the dealer you'll take which ever one he can get first and go with it.

BRZ21 08-28-2013 11:05 AM

swp will be difficult to paint. I got ssm for that exact reason.

ihaskrayon 08-28-2013 11:06 AM

I had a SWP car before the BRZ, so I already knew I loved the color. DGM was my top choice at first, but when it came down to wheel selection, the color choices were very limited. I decided to go with SWP.

Actually the other day, I was looking at it in the right angle and the rear quarter was pure satin, almost flat white with shimmer looking. Almost like a wedding dress or something. I was nice

dotdotdotPaul 08-28-2013 11:23 AM

I already got mine (SSM) and I *still* don't know which color I like best! ;)

Subaru Blue or "WPB" for me. it's the only color that isn't shared with the FR-S.

Ahh yes, back in the early days of availability, where people would let fate decide and buy the first frs/brz that came up for sale, regardless of color

My best advice is to just go to the dealerships (on a sunny day, of course) and look at each color. Each color makes the shape of the car look slightly different IMO. I like DGM (asphalt on the FRS) because it's the most modern-looking color. It also has a hint of purple flake in it, which really shines out at sunrise/sunset, so it's very dynamic. Pictures on the internet help, but they just aren't the same as actually looking at the car in person.

Frstorm 08-28-2013 11:48 AM

I have an frs almost went whiteout sight unseen but decided to stick with firestorm and I am so glad. Make sure to see all colors

ZetaVI 08-28-2013 11:48 AM

Make a list of the colors and one by one eliminate the ones you don't see yourself choosing until the last one left is the on you're happy with. Obviously bias, these cars have a lot of good colors when usually other cars have at most one or two colors that stick out.

gatorbushmen 08-28-2013 12:22 PM

I got whiteout only because I was afraid of paint swirls since I'm a clean freak.....
But every time I see a WRB BRZ, makes me wish I would have dropped the extra money to get the BRZ.... I'm still happy with my choice though :)

Whatever you do, don't regret your choice. Our cars look better than 95% of the cars on the road. 'Nuff said.

still torn between SWP and WRB with DGM and SSM being considered... what to do...what to do....

enwave 08-28-2013 01:23 PM

Tough call. I'll say I was hesitant with SSM, but it was the only new Limited within a large radius of me. Now I absolutely LOVE it and would buy the same color again in a heartbeat.

I have a feeling that you aren't going to pick a color you dislike, no matter which one you pick. They all look great on this car.

tobin 08-28-2013 01:24 PM

They're pretty much all equally perfect. You can't go wrong.

mattles 08-28-2013 01:32 PM

cant discount that GBS, its a color you really have to see in person to fully appreciate (crazy beautiful under direct or partial sunlight, looks mostly black/stealthy at night)

KelvinBRZ 08-28-2013 01:32 PM

This might be a silly strand of thoughts but whenever I see SWP I always think "luxurious race car" that reminds me of the porsche cayman in white. WRB just screams Subaru and is its flagship color. DGM can pass by very unnoticed in the wild, but when you come close to it, it looks very very sexy. SSM looks like it belongs somewhere in Europe or in a huge city under the shade where it shines best.

Then again, I feel like my GBS color was made for the cali sun.

100% agree. the exact same thing happened to me

Seraph 08-28-2013 01:55 PM

Hmm so I say just pick the color that speaks to you.

However, if you want to get some reasonings behind it...

Attention level:
SWP is really popular so if you want to be "different" don't get SWP or WRB. Although SWP and WRB and red are probably the most eye catching colors. The car is just really beautiful in SWP (I'm a little biased ^_~ ) - and in the day time the car practically glows in WRB.

If you want a little less attention - I'd go for the DGM or Silver. DGM look very sleek and elegant and less easy to pick out (read - less of a cop magnet). Black is pretty sleek and a little more aggressive looking.

If you want to be really different get Galaxy blue...thus far I've only seen one of those on the roads...or Silver I've only seen a couple as well. (on the other hand, if you are thinking "how easy will it be to find 2nd hand parts If I ever need to replace something"...go for the more popular colors).

If you are thinking high or low maintenance:
The DGM and silver are probably the least likely to show dirt and scratches. Also if you are thinking of doing Expel or 3M... SWP they recommend Expel cus it is slightly less "yellow" and shows up less so ...it is more expensive than 3M film =__=

At the end of the day... did I think about all this before picking? Yeah.... In the end did any of this influence my choice? (I bounced back and forth between SWP, red, and DGM.)

No. Haha I just picked the color that I found the most arresting and couldn't stop looking at.

jkonquer 08-28-2013 02:42 PM

There is huge misconception of photography and seeing in person. Many time, photography are filtered or corrected to show the contrast of light and dark. In person, many colors like white, light silver, and none metallic color becomes very bland since there are no contrast in the sun light. Thats where metallic color shines in real life.
Gt86 is a very curvy vehicle with very little edges. Cars like these look better with metallic color to show all the lines. Cars like impreza or evos are very boxy with sharp edges, which color white can benefit from. Also bland colors show very well at night or artificial lighting condition.
I love color white. but in my personal opinion, metallic colors like wrb, dgm, gbs, silver will look nicer on gt86. You can really appreciate the lines.
You really have to see them in person and stop looking at the pictures. Most likely you will be looking at your car during the sunny day and or in your garage.

track junkie 08-28-2013 03:43 PM

Dark Gray Metallic is a covert, stealthy, and inconspicuous color. It is not a "look at me" attention getter. Do you want to fly under the radar or do you want to be noticed?

I feel like with such a beautiful car part of me wants to show it off... At the same time though, living in a smaller town I would rather not have everyone know where I am at all times :P

For those of you that own DGM, does it go that unnoticed? Or are you saying so in comparison to the other colors available.

Who says you have to pick just one?

BRZPDX 08-28-2013 07:05 PM

don't worry, you'll choose a color, then you wish you chose a different color in 12 months. You can always wrap you're car to any color in the future, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I had a pre-mod vision in my mind, so I knew I was going SWP with "panda" accents with CF/Matte Black/Brushed black metal pieces, with black rims.

I sorta wish I went WRB for the Subaru exclusive color, and going with aggressive Bronze rims.

iamsatan 08-29-2013 03:51 AM

WRB cause it's Subaru.

Or1tE 08-29-2013 04:08 AM

You guys are so lucky to have multiple colors to choose from. Here in China, when 86/BRZ first became available back in March this year, we didn't much choice in colors. We had to take whatever they had in stock at the dealers. And we even had to pay premium for an 86, around $4500~7500+ on top of the MSRP. We are paying a lot more for the 86s and BRZs here in China than you guys do in the U.S. The MSRP for 86/BRZ is $41385/MT and $42923/AT. T_T
I preordered mine in March and got it in June. The only two MT BRZs they had coming in were both in white pearl. I wanted go for the WRB but had to settle for the white one. But I kinda liked the white color after I had seen it. So yeah, that's my story.

Or1tE 08-29-2013 04:09 AM

Oh, I didn't pay premium for my BRZ because most of them wanted the GT86s. And all the dealers have stopped charging premium for either 86 or BRZ.

I am in-between Lightning Red and Dark Grey Metallic. Thankfully, I already convinced myself that I don't want World Rally Blue. I am just praying it does not creep in my mind again...

Lol I was exactly in the same boat. At the end I finally counted out WRB from my top 2 colors to choose from.

I do get weird feelings when I see it in pictures and what not though.....it's almost like that girl that you knew you could've hooked up with before you went with your gf, and you are ok with it because your gf is your first choice, but still....every time you see that other girl you kinda want to....but then you remember what you have....yeah.....that's WRB for me....

I end up going for black btw.

gt8613 09-04-2013 06:00 PM

Favorite color = red. That's always my strategy. If not available in red, I tend to go with lighter colors such as white or silver.

CTB727 09-04-2013 06:32 PM

I used to hate silver on ANY car, til I saw a silver BRZ in person. Silver shows off the body lines better than any other color. I originally ordered WRB because of how vibrant it is. But it just doesn't have the "timeless" look to it that SSM does. I'm happy with my decision to get silver :)
