Is it weird that I like the smaller wheels?
I absolutely love the styling of the BRZ/FR-S except for one thing: the wheels!
Now I don't have much intention of keeping stock wheels on the car, but for the first year I'll probably be stuck with 'em until I can save up enough for a good, quality set of wheels from a Japanese manufacturer (read: Volk, Work, Wedssport, etc.) and I honestly like the look of the 16" wheels offered on the BRZ's in Japan better than the 17's which to me look bland and Camry-like. I also plan on getting 18" wheels when I go aftermarket, so it's not the size so much as the style that puts me off. Am I alone in thinking this? http://response.jp/imgs/zoom/412470.jpg http://response.jp/imgs/zoom/411111.jpg |
not alone at all i prefer the 16's aswell
16's look good, they remind me of RS Watanabe wheels.
Because it looks better. I wish they make it 17".
I'm with you on this.
I'd like the 16s if they were 17s. They look simpler and all one color.
I'd love some all black rpf1s though.... |
Same. I also like 16'' wheels too.
I think the 16" are really good looking also.
I prefer the 16'' wheels as well. Wish they were stock and the 17'' an option.
I plan on swapping rims at some point. I'll stay with 17's but a completely different design. Even the 2012 WRX look like a nice (albeit heavy) alternative.
I have to disagree; I like the 17s more than the 16s, but would never put anything bigger than that on this car. 18s are out of the question as far as I'm concerned.
Make 16" style in 17" then let the buyers choose.
I like em, but I much prefer 17's to larger. Especially when it comes time to buy new rubber for them ;)

I think both wheels look terrible. My major gripe with the 17''s is they are not concave.
I like them too. Can we get some photoshop experts in here?
I was actually considering those 16" stockers for winter duty and err...parking lot maneuverability...excercises. You know, for when you have to snap the car around at lower speeds due to circumstances beyond your control. Or whatever.
I mean rubber is cheap enough for 16" wheels, plus I'm positive they're noticeably lighter as well. Reduce rotational mass & rolling resistance while saving on cost. Without looking too shabby doing it. |
I dislike both, 17s less so. 16s are too plain-looking.
16s are fine, 17s are fine any bigger is no good.
While I dont love THOSE 16's I really like the IDEA of 16's. I think with the proper drop they would look killer with some nice meaty tires.
You guys all have a small wheel fetish....
Count me in. I like those 16's, but I'm not sure if it's the design or the size. |
Score! This thread made my day. I've been wondering for a while whether or not the brakes would be too big for 16's. Now that I know they fit, I'm definitely going 16's for winter and possibly 16's for performance due to weight. Cheers!
I much prefer 16" over 17" wheels as a rule for performance, and don't really like either of the stock wheel designs at all. A 225/50-16 tire is one of the cheapest tires sizes as well - for the Hankook RS-3 they are $116 while the 215/45-17's run $138 each. They are heavier though...weighing more than the 215/45-17's by 3 pounds. 16" wheels with 205/55-16 tires would be the way to go for a lightweight setup.
I do like the 16's better style wise and size wise. Just curious, will the US spec premium come with these wheels? The one in the OP looks like the JDM spec. I've tried searching in the pics & vids section, but most of the pics were of the limited.

Takumi wheels! FTW!

205/55-16 are the stock tire size for the stock 16" wheels. 225/50-16 and 205/55-16 are the same exact diameter of24.9" I already have 225/50-16 Hankook RS-3's mounted on 16x7 Enkei RS-5's that my brother is using on his Impreza 2.5 RS - I want to try those out...
I had 15x8 wheels with 225/45-15 Nitto NT-01 tires on the Integra RS, the Honda engineers didn't intend for that combo either but it handled and felt better than stock (of course there were other changes as well...). You can't get a FF or FR car to be quick enough steering/responsive for my taste - I like quick/minute/fine-tuned input vehicles: Picture |
I actually like em smaller. I don't know why but I like 14/15 inch wheels on small cars, any bigger and it just doesn't seem to look right imo. This car or any other modern car will never have wheels that small though.
I think it's just the style. They do look kinda like old-school Watanabes:
http://www.rs-watanabe.co.jp/images/...to/itou.h4.jpg Maybe if the Premium comes with them I'll swap with someone when I get a Limited, that way I can get cheap winter tires and they can have the bigger wheels. |

I do remember that bit because it didn't sit right with me. |
Wonder how much it would be for a set of those 16"s - I need winter wheels anyway...

I actually like the 16" as well. I think the reason why it looks better is because it looks more balanced. The wheel gap of the 17" really stood out because the thinner sidewall on the tires. The 16" has fatter sidewall so it balances out the wheel gap better.
While i don't necessarily like the style of the wheel, i do LOVE the fact that they are 16s. I have 16s on my personal car, and am not interested in going larger. Tires are affordable, and it makes the car look a bit more menacing when you add in a decent drop.
And i KNOW for a fact that people will be lowering this car and going through a TON of tires. We certainly will... Chase |

, and tire width, even at 18 inches, can safely grow to as much as 235 – but only in the rear. The front tires need to stay at 215. They don't say why. Other people that have measured have pointed out the fenders are prerolled and could take 245+. |
