"The counterfeit [ROTA] wheels have recently surfaced through some wheel dealers in Malaysia. They are manufactured in China. The most distinct feature of the 'copies' is that they are embossed with a ROTA marking on the face of the wheel..."

SMDH....

brz_star21 08-15-2013 01:01 PM

Taste of their own medicine. Good for them. Maybe they'll start doing their own designs exclusively now... yeah right! That is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard. Thanks for making my day!

EDIT: so the article even mentions the counterfeit company took the extra step to add embossing to the rim casting (essentially an upgrade from the "original" Rotas)... I can't stop laughing!

I died laughing when I read this on Facebook yesterday. I think this is meme-worthy:

Which is actually the point of their press release.

Not that people make copycat wheels. Clearly they're guilty of that themselves. But they at least don't mis-represent their wheels as anyone else's. This counterfeiter is purposefully trying to misrepresent their product as someone else's, something Rota has never been guilty of.

What they are concerned with is that someone is making knockoffs and passing them off as Rotas, and that people could be buying wheels they think are Rotas that really aren't. That's a very far cry from someone purposefully seeking out copycat Rotas because they don't want a $4,000 set of Rays.

Copy, replica, style, whatever companies want to call it to make themselves feel better on not having any original ideas of their own it's all the same. In my eyes just because they didn't put the brand they blatantly stole the wheel design from doesn't make it any less fake and deceiving. Again, Rota got what they deserved.

I understand some people can't fathom paying full price for the original stuff but companies like Rota claiming their stuff is their own original design or have put R&D into developing it is crap. If they want to copy them or use the design they should pay royalties to the original company just like how musicians pay other musicians to use their songs.

How do you pay royalties on something that isn't patented or copyrighted?

If anything, blame the original designer for not protecting their IP.

Rota is releasing this because their wheels meet the certification as mandated in Japan, while the copy wheels have the same stamping but are not certified.

If one wishes to read this as a "you got what you deserved" post, then you need to re-read the press release again in detail.

I don't care for Rota, but I also have an understanding of what this serves to prevent.

What he said^^^.

It's not that another legitimate wheel manufacturer copied the STYLE while ensuring structural integrity and meeting basic strength/durability standards.

They are RIGHTLY raising the alarm about counterfeit wheels which most likely don't have any analysis or testing behind them, and could be weak-as-hell as-cast non-heat-treated scrap-grade aluminum.

Big difference!

hanabie 08-16-2013 01:57 PM

lol retards... they should warn people not to buy counterfeit Rays! Buy their wheels because they copy better than the others do. huh????!!

GTB/ZR-1 08-16-2013 02:00 PM

And counterfeit threads! lol

It be all about the RAZE wheels yo!

spitz 08-16-2013 02:18 PM

Ahhh the irony!

Chee-Hu 08-16-2013 03:44 PM

At least Rota isn't selling wheels that are branded with other manufacturers name. From what I read, Rota is warning folks about fake Rota wheels that are not produced by them. Am I misunderstanding this completely?

mrk1 08-16-2013 04:03 PM

Ive used rotas for years and never had problems. There style maybe knock off but they make a good quality part. Maybe not top top of the line but still usuable with out having to worry

toyoman 08-16-2013 05:21 PM

ROTA is the only company guilty of creating "knockoffs"? I don't think so...
