Just Popped the Cherry...Now What?!

Hello all, so I'm still in the honeymoon phase of what I would like to label: "My Best Purchase of the Century!", and I just passed 1000 miles while heading home from work today. I had a thought about changing the oil since I'm thru the break-in period. Wanted to get some thoughts on what you all have done once you passed the 'Pace Lap' of 1000 miles. Is it even necessary to change the oil?

Let me know thanks.

I thought the exact same thing. I ended up doing my first oil change at 3000 miles. Someone, somewhere on this forum stated that the engine bits in the factory oil is good for the motor. He compared it to the exfoliating face washes with the micro beads lol

i changed the oil around 1500 miles with the subaru 0-20. When it drained it still looked new.

There is a HUGE discussion about this somewhere... I think the title of the thread is something about "break-in period" or something similar. From what I gathered, the general consensus was "no, you should not change it at 1,000 miles." But of course there were several "definitely yes"-es.

Some people recommended that you actually avoid it until the 7,500 mark. Personally, I wouldn't wait that long, but then again, I drive the hell out of my car. Or... at least I will when I finally get to drive it...

I didn't wait until 1000 miles to break mine in. I am not planning to do the first oil change until at least 6,000 for my fr-s. I probably won't until 7500.

change mine at 1500.. then i let it rip:burnrubber: i didnt go at high revs after the 1500 oil.. i wanted it to break in more.. i did go 5-20 due to its summer

He was very wrong.

But I'm sure St. Ives would love to know of this cross-marketing opportunity. :D

Did mine at the 1500 mile mark. Can't hurt to put fresh oil in a motor.

thill 08-09-2013 11:49 PM

I am just going to follow the service manual for oil changes.

bkblitzed 08-09-2013 11:56 PM

it all depends on how you drive at the end of the day, Drive like a grandma, than sure might as well follow the pamphlet. Drive aggressive and you'll be doing oil changes more frequently.

whatever you and your wallet feel comfortable with. or take advantage of the couple free oil changes most stealerships will throw at yah.

i hit 1k and took it in that weekend for a change. i was planning on doing it earlier but i was lazy and given the fact that i didn't have to pay it was hard not to get it done.

i had already installed an invidia n1 catback before 1k and then directly after installed injen intake and unichip. this car responds surprisingly well to bolt ons and tuning really bring it alive.

Did my first at 3000 miles. Just about to do my second at 7500 early next week sometime. Currently at 7200 miles.

Luis_GT 08-10-2013 03:42 AM

did my first at 1000 (978 to be exact)

dannyboy8793 08-10-2013 01:18 PM

Since I'm retired and have 4 cars I don't put a lot of miles on any one car. I use the time schedules for oil changes instead of mileage. I'll do mine at 7-1/2 months and it will be about 4000+ miles by then.

rayparé 08-11-2013 04:02 AM

I did mine a 1500km. The thing is the engine on car these days are pretty well built due to the technology advancement so there not much metal residue and other stuff cause by the break-in compared to car that was built before so it's really a personnal choice. Personnaly, i recommend it, you can never be to safe!

Hardrock4445 08-11-2013 08:29 AM

I'm in the "drive it like you stole it" break in theory crowd. Change oil early to get rid of engine "dust" in the oil and start revving it out.
