My friend had one of these with 320whp, LSD, completely done-up suspension/chassis reinforcement, lots of weight reduction, etc. etc. etc. Shit was RIDICULOUS.
My girlfriend has a stock one now. It's lots of fun to drive. I've only seen about 4 other ones ever. They're pretty rare. |
..... burn this image with fire please, I think my vote can't be any more clear
|
What's so bad about it?

It's a great car ergonomically speaking.... but it's been defiled and to riced out by the masses for far toooo long |
I was riding shotgun (which was really bad for it, since it weighed just a hair over a ton) and he made an old man in a brand new Corvette feel really really bad about his purchase. Why in the world the old man decided to challenge two dudes in a Corolla to a race is still beyond us to this day, and that was in like 2007. Maybe wanted to ensure his victory? Haha wrong Corolla, son.

My father has the most recent XRS - from a fun-to-drive perspective, it's as close to an absolute zero as I hope to ever experience behind the wheel. A rental Accent I had for a week 3 years ago was far, far more fun.

It may have a nice engine... but it's still a seriously uncool car... remember... Cool has nothing to do with how much power it has, or how fast it is.
|
Doesn't matter how fast it is, still a Corolla with a body kit.

A nonfast Aston Martin?

Imho the new high performance ones have to much "bling-ish ness" on them, you can definitely tell they are catered to celebrities who want the entire restaurant to look at them when they arrive, not be subtle The old school astons and "base" models were/are utterly absolute zero  |
The Corolla coolness factor goes like this:
AE86 (Corolla GTS): Cool 2005-2006 Corolla XRS: A step above uncool, but not quite cool enough to be taken seriously. Every other corolla in existence up to the present: Not worthy of being mentioned anywhere near the word 'cool'. The 2014+ Corollas has potential to be cool though....... |
I voted "cool" because I thought we were voting from our own perspective, not what other people probably think is cool. If I had known that, I'd have definitely voted uncool or seriously uncool. But... looks like it's going to be determined as uncool. The regular Joe doesn't even know what a Lotus is, they surely won't appreciate or have any clue about a 2ZZ Corolla.

2003 Matrix XRS > Any Corolla XRS

To be honest, nothing really special..
|
I drive a corolla. I don't know why you'd get a coroll xrs. it's still a corolla

It handles really well for what it is though. It has upgraded suspension compared to the base model and the S. They're not coilovers, but it is a tad bit more than just the 2ZZ. It's really tossable and peppy for a family car.
|
i'd say cool, honestly if you haven't driven one i wont be able to explain it
toyota did a lot of things to change this car, its not just a corolla with a body kit there is actually more chassis bracing, different suspension all together, rear seats do not fold down because of the bracing. but anyway, its a neat car, handles fairly well also......i'd say cool, take something as boring as a corolla and make it semi-fun |
It's about as cool as a Civic Si .....
Did I really just say that. |
The XRS is a nice sleeper, its a grocery getter with some balls. A bit of boost and its pretty fun. 9th gen FTW!

XRS has the 2ZZGE + 6 speed manual, better seats (more side bolstering, tougher harder material isnt as spongy soft), red/white optitron gauges, the steering rack is apparently different in this one for more road feel (heavier and more accurate) Im not really sure if the 'sport tuned' suspension was anything more than additional bracing, lower ride height, that Xbrace behind the rear seats (it blocks the pass through hole so theres no point in fold down seats) a strut tower brace on the front (was a weird strut bar, not a solid bar) , bigger wheels (195/55/16 stock, 185/65/15 i think were on the less corollas) same OEM tires as the FRS (I think they're older versions, but they're still the Michelin Primacy tires) 10th gen XRS was a disgrace. Although there wasn't really much of a legacy with the 9th gen XRS (Overseas they did have the equivalent Corolla TS hatchbacks from the initial redesign in 2003 and even the 9th gen supercharged compressor with 215hp later) but what they had going with the 9th gen XRS disappeared in the 10th gen XRS. |

i got to drive a few of them, at the time i was a salesman at toyota. I had fun driving it, granted at the time i was driving an STI as a daily(this was back in 06 or so i'd guess? |

I always really liked the matrix's 17" XRS wheels (were these an option on the corolla as well?); never really liked the 16". Also, 2003 was the best year for the XRS, as after that more emissions stuff was added to the 2ZZ and it was detuned/rerated for less power (and a lower redline?).

I really like the 1st gen's Matrix's styling, the 2nd gen never did anything for me. |
