Tint or no tint?
Hey all,
I was just wanting to get some opinions about tint. I have a whiteout FR-S and was looking to tint the windows, but I'm not sure if I should go legal or darker. Heck, maybe no tint at all? If you vote for illegal tint would you please post what %? Edit: For those interested in what the legal tint limit is in their state here is a link. http://www.tintlaws.com/#Alabama-tab |
Do what you want. I plan on getting 20% even if it's legal or not
|
I do whats legal here. Which is whatever I want in the back, and the driver/passenger front windows is 20%. That way there are no hassles, I got tired of worrying about it in the past and decided with my last 2 vehicles to stay legal. I'm not sure whats legal in NC so that would maybe swap your decision if its something really high.
|
35% all around. Any tint here in NJ is illegal (front windows).
|
Good idea for a thread. I'm on the fence right now but I for sure want tint, just not sure if I want to stay legal or not. I love the look of a dark tint on whiteout but not a big fan of attracting any unwanted attention from the police. I'll probably stay legal simply for that reason alone..
|
I believe in NC it's 32%.

20% is legal here in NM. So I got 20% all around. with a strip up front.

They are pretty serious about tint laws where I live (got pulled over in my last car). So I decided to keep it legal for the side windows (50%) and went with 35% for the rear window since the equipment our police use in my town, they can only check the side windows.
Really depends on how serious the police are with the laws in your area. |
tint is a must, I hate driving fish bowls
|
I stuck with legal. 32% all around in GA. I really don't see a reason for much darker tint so I don't really understand taking the risk of going illegal.
If I were you I'd stick to 35%. Tint really does keep your car cooler (recently switched from a car w/o tint to the FR-S with tint) which is a must in the summers here. |
I previously had 20% on my Mazda 3. I'm going to go with 35% on my BRZ to stay on the (closer) to legal side here. Although I prefer the darkness of 20%, it looks substantially darker than 35% and I'd rather not risk a fix-it ticket.
|
Tint, definitely. (at least for those of us that live in the south and/or have hot summers)
Legal for me. 35% sides, 15% back. |
Fish bowlin =]
|
I had 5% on the back of my Mazda 3 and 15% up front. 70% is legal in CA on front windows. I owned the car for 6 years. Not pulled over for it even once. I have 20% on the front of my FRS now and 15% in the back (tint looks better when they are relatively matched) and have yet to be pulled over for it.
My sister drives a 2007 Camry and got pulled over within three months. A good shop will remove them for you for free if you get a ticket due to that. Hell, my shop will even reinstall tint for free after I show proof that I took care of the ticket. Don't worry! |
I am on the fence with tinting this car... all my prior cars were tinted.
So far I am finding the light factory smoke color a nice change compared to my prior cars. |
I have 20% all around on mine, no sun visor...And it is illegal in Illinois
|
Get legal tint, being pulled over and having to remove it and re tint it is going to cost a lot.
|
Im always wearing polarized sunglasses while driving and the effects of tint really annoys me when im looking out the side windows. I might tint in the future but it will be light maybe 35 or more.
|
If you go illegal, just be sure to roll your window down before the cop walks up to your car. If he pulled you over because of your tint, you're already screwed. You shouldn't have gone that dark anyway. Shit'll look purple. But if he pulled you over for anything else, which is usually the case, the odds of him check/noticing your tint are probably pretty slim unless his organization recently decided to start cracking down on tint.
I have this outrageous idea for a law that if you get pulled over, you should be required to roll your window down before the cop approaches the car. If your windows don't roll down, you should be required to open the door and show both of your hands. I would be totally down to comply with this. We'd have even fewer dead cops and 0 reasons for tint laws. Yeah, this would suck in the heat, cold, or if it's raining. Maybe the law could say that if your tint is darker than X%, then you have to do this. Otherwise, you can keep your window up until the last second for comfort reasons. Then they could start testing tint more often and bust people who aren't in compliance, thus earning more revenue, which is a huge goal these days anyway. Everyone wins. |
fish bowel ftw! I just dont like tint.

Why? |
Tints are for insecure little boys.
|
Oh. Well shit, I wish someone would've told me. I've been trying to stay cool and keep my interior from cracking, while driving around looking all insecure and shit. :(
|
I just think no tint looks better. Also at night i want nothing that can obscure my vision in any window. Ive had 5% tint all around my STi and it was no bueno. Ripped it all out and just made it nicer.

I don't know if you guys missed my thread here, but I got 3M Crystalline 70% installed. It's the second lightest tint from 3M but also has one of the best heat rejection properties. Like, you can literally feel the difference if you crack the window and let the sunlight fall on your skin.
Downside is, it's expensive. Paid $800 for all around, including the windshield. |
idk i like to see through my car and see the interior. It just reminds me of racecars lexan windows i guess lol.
|
It surprises me that CA of all states actually allows windshield tint.

I agree, 100% clear lexan with the little slider window and a bunch of bolts everywhere looks tough as hell. But I'm also considering doing an A/C delete, so... heat. |

I had 5% on my old Carlos sainz celica and never got bothered because I literally never had the windows up more than half when driving.
I found out that at night you really cannot see out and when someone has their headlights on you, all you see are two little circles. Never again...just too dangerous. Legal ftw |
Anthony, cease and desist with the :threadjacked:
|
Visibility at night is why I say keep it legal. With 32% on the rear and side windows I have zero visibility problems at night.
