sorry - i'm confused. can you compare apples to apples? like...

US DOT
1. all clear or all red lense?
2. red blinker
3. side reflector (is this a reflector ONLY or does it the reflector have a bulb that lights up)?

JDM TOM'S
1. all red lense
2. amber blinker
3. no side reflector, or has side reflector but doesn't light up

Ok, this is the official word from my boys at TOM'S USA...

"All TOMS lights are made by DEPO. The only difference between the JDM version and USDM version is:

1. USDM lights will be DOT approved
2. USDM lights will have light in side reflector
3. USDM lights will have red turn signal"

Will these lights require a replacement of the flasher module beneath the dash like the non DOT approved lights?

Yes and the proper relay is provided.

Why does the red blinker make them DOT legal. DOT requires Red or Amber people.

so this is an extra bulb that located in the side reflector and lights it up like a side marker? it's an actual lit side reflector using electricity vs. one that just reflects light and is passive?

Correct. And side reflectors aren't required to be actively lit. I don't see any reason why the JDM version would fail DOT approval if it were to go through the process. I suppose Tom's just wants to differentiate the two models and only the US variant is seeking approval.

Edit: apparently the side reflectors don't need to be lit but it is a requirement to have red rear side lamps actively lit.

Not 100% that I want to buy yet, but I'm wondering if we put a deposit down do we have to choose immediately between the red or clear housing? If I do decide to buy these lights I'd want to see them both on a silver ignition car (or at least a mock-up) before I make my decision.

how do I make a deposit for the clear lens ones? Are they the ones that has the black outlines inside the housing?
