If you think this car is slow...

Then quite honestly you aren't driving it right. The last few days I have been driving it hard. Harder than I have driven it so far.
There is no way this car can be considered slow.
I will admit 1st gear is kinda eh... But anything higher and it just flys along.
By the way my last car was a Ferrari and I genuinely am having more fun with this car.
Carry on fellow owners. And drive the piss out of your car.

Wise 08-09-2013 12:31 AM

What kind of Ferrari did you have?

My last car was a 500hp Supra and I agree this car can seem quite fast when driven on a lively winding road and around corners.

But when you need to overtake someone on a highway it can be a bit annoying having to almost redline it to get past.

m.box.design 08-09-2013 12:33 AM

i think the argument that it is slow is because it exists in an age where numbers and stat sheets are what sells cars and creates buzz. 300+ hp is the standard, when wanting to be drawn into magazine articles for comparison. if this car came out in 2000 instead of the toyota celica, it would have won even more accolades. not to take anything away from this car, but the people who judge this car by its numbers are the people who read stat sheets and number comparison charts in magazines and such.

this car is not blistering fast, but it is fast in its own right, and very nimble. the car is better appreciated behind the wheel, not from behind a keyboard or stat sheet.

Very true. I don't think the 'cafe racers' will really appreciate the car. But honestly I'm having way more fun in this car than I had in my Supra. i love being able to access the entire rev range while driving hard through twisties.

autobrz 08-09-2013 12:50 AM

Getting back in my car after driving my wife's Prius for 4 days straight, the brz feels like a rocket ship, lol... it has more than adequate power and I find I easily exceed the speed limit very quickly if I keep my foot in it... In the twisty canyon roads, you can't really put the power down unless if it's an uphill climb and a relatively long straight section. Any downhill section, a more powerful car might be too dangerous to drive all out...

Drftfan 08-09-2013 01:02 AM

I had a 92 348. So faster than the frs but not by much.

JK21 08-09-2013 01:58 AM

I came from a 600+ awhp GTR.....this car is a bit more enjoyable just b/c I can throw it around and have a lot of fun....but on the straights and digs I miss my GTR :/

I've read a lot of comments like this, and of course a lot of discussion on everyone's favorite torque dip. Personally, I enjoy driving cars that require high RPMs to get the full effect. Like my girlfriend's 2ZZ Corolla. VVTLI doesn't even kick in until like 7200 RPMs. So even at 7100 RPMs, you're not giving it enough!

Don't hold me to that, it might be more like 6800, but still. You get the idea.

I've test driven two FR-Ses, and they were both brand new, so I babied the hell out of them. And since I haven't gotten to drive my own yet, I still have no first hand experience with the "slowness." But when I read stuff like this, it just makes me more excited about it.

ZionsWrath 08-09-2013 02:17 AM

I dunno but I rather enjoy rev matching 3rd gear from 6th on the highway from ~60mph. Makes me feel all race car like and when I'm done I'm only doing 70-75. lol

Anthony 08-09-2013 02:20 AM

Exactly. The noise adds to the sensation of speed, especially when it comes on all of a sudden like in a 6th to 3rd shift.

Symmetrical 08-09-2013 02:32 AM

The fastest car I've owned was a 380awhp EVO IX that was capable of high 11s. I know what power is. But it's all pointless when I couldn't even use any of it majority of the time I was driving it. Power wise yes the BRZ/FRS isn't going to blow anybody's doors off. But it was never intended to. But I COULD agree with most that maybe it needs perhaps just about 20more hp or a little bit more low end torque. But otherwise it's more than enough for me too.

Good luck with that, I felt the same way; this car is plenty fast if you drive it in the power band. But I wish you luck I really do.

Yeah what's with suspicious luck guy?

Also everyone knows that one of the main selling points of a car like a ferrari is its mechanical reliability :bonk:

DarkSunrise 08-09-2013 10:33 AM

It's all relative. If you're coming from a car that used to run 11's/12's/13's, as a good number of folks on this forum are, it'll feel slow. If you're coming from a car that ran 14's/15's or above, it'll feel fine.

Anthony 08-09-2013 10:39 AM

To me, a "slow" car is one that feels unresponsive, heavy, and understeers through a corner, causing me to tone it down a bit to avoid death. To me, this is a fast car.

When people are all, "is it fast?" I'm all, "yes."

99% of the time they're asking about top speed, but I answer from a handling/agility standpoint. I'm aware that I'm not actually answering their question, but they're not. Of course if they're an actual car enthusiast, the conversation is a lot different.

He is the resident doom and gloomer. According to him all of our cars will explode sometime between 30-60K miles... If not sooner...

I digress, I don't find this car slow by any means. I also don't find it particularly fast in a straight line. I would call it quick. I have owned much faster cars, but I also enjoy this car so much on the twisties, and I enjoy driving the car the way it was meant to be driven. Above 5K :)

It depends on what you intend to do with the car. If you intend to race/compare against other cars at highway speeds in a straight line, there are a lot of cars that will simply overpower you. You may feel that it is "slow" in this situation. If you intend to enjoy the car by itself (carving up back roads, etc.), then it has more than enough power. I'm in the second category. When I'm zipping around on deserted back roads early in the morning, it has plenty of power - if I'm wringing its neck I'm usually going way too fast as it is.

I don't think you really understand this term. You're using it like "bench racer". It may have originally started in Europe (50 years ago - how old are you?) as an insult to guys who wanted to look the part of a motorcycle racer but whose bikes spent most of the time parked in front of cafes but it mostly was used to describe motorcycles that were raced through the countryside from cafe to cafe. If you've ever seen one, you'd know why the races were short: the damned things are so uncomfortable you can't stay on one for very long.

If you're comparing this car based on quarter mile times and the ability to race Civics from stoplight to stoplight..... you're doing it wrong....

Kids need to understand this engine's (this car and all their cars) dyno graph(s) and their "sweet spots". Learn when to be in the sweet spot and you will think this car has endless HP. ;)

utekineir 08-09-2013 01:32 PM

Every time I drive my forester (vf39 + boltons) since getting the frs I smile so much more, even just accelerating at a normal pace.

There is a considerable difference in feel between the two, and I appreciate where the lesbian wagon is at so much more now than I did when driving it every day.

Contrast can be a nice thing.

That said if you don't dance around the torque dip this car can feel like a soggy turd.

Anthony 08-09-2013 01:39 PM

I prefer my turds soggy, actually. Different strokes...

did you drive the piss outa the ferrari? If no than of course the frs is gonna seem faster etc. Our cars are on par with civic Si's, and are really only meant for tight roads/autox.

At times I did yes. That car begged to be driven hard.
I just have always preferred Japanese cars in regards to cost.

headlikeahole 08-09-2013 05:53 PM

I have said this before and I will say it again. The whole concept behind the twins was to return to the glory days of sports cars when it was all about cheap, rwd, light weight cars, not about the numbers, not about lap times, or quarter miles.

If you purchased a twin and complain about its stats, then you just dont get it.

HI 08-10-2013 02:24 AM

I owned a 490 awhp 04 STi. The straight line speed isn't the same on my frs but I can corner way better in the frs. I gotta say I love the frs more overall but still miss the power of the STi.
Frs slow? No way! I wouldn't really say its fast either. In my mind I think about it as quick and nimble. Nothing too crazy for power but enough to make the car balanced.
