BRZ Limited owners - I accidentally took my keyless entry keyfob for an ocean swim...

I sprinted back to the beach, cracked open the keyless entry with the flat tip of the valet key (cleverly designed, btw) and found out that the key circuitry is protected by a rubber gasket.

Despite the fact that I was 8 hours away from my other key and had been in the water for a solid minute, Subaru's engineering team really saved my ass on this one.

tl;dr keyless ignition/bluetooth key is decently waterproof

I put my keys through the washing machine once.

They still work.

thill 08-08-2013 02:01 PM

That's good to know!

Chee-Hu 08-08-2013 02:16 PM

That's good to know, indeed!

I think you should thank Toyota Prius engineers instead.

What do you do if your key fob stops working? I guess you can get into the car through the trunk but can you start the engine?

PoWn3d_0704 08-08-2013 03:20 PM

Pull the battery and find out :D

br_z1Lch 08-08-2013 03:22 PM

I also put mine through the washing machine. I took the trunk key out and shook the water out, and it's still working months later. Very happy they thought to protect the electronics!

Yup. It's a Toyota key. Innards look identical to the Lexus keys I've taken apart to replace the batteries.

AZOOZ_95 08-08-2013 03:27 PM

I have a gt86 with same key... good to know.

Dropped my fob in dirty oil while changing the oil, that was fun. But a little disassembly and cleaning and all turned out ok. Yeah the fobs seem pretty durable.

You can use the physical key you pull out of the key fob to unlock the driver's side door to get into the car, and you should be able to start the engine if you hold the key fob in close proximity to the start button.

Fair enough. I'll just leave it at Japanese engineering then.

Yup, a guy on another brz forum mentioned that a Subaru tech advised holding a dead key fob right up to the start button so that it'd be within range for the car to passively read it.

Or you can open up the manual and read what to do ;)
Might be a bit annoying though, since your alarm might be going off after opening the car with a mechanical key.

Well, a one minute google search or sifting through the owner's manual seemed like a no brainer given the circumstances, but I applaud you for (seemingly) haven gone through your owner's manual. Which reminds me, I should probably put that back in my glovebox.

It's nice when they pay attention to the little things.

ZionsWrath 08-08-2013 08:22 PM

Bought a premium with a key so I don't have to worry about keyless start and alcantara maintenance :)

But I did spend the extra for the spoiler

Did you notice that the battery is no where to be found???

I opened mine when I got the car just to see what kind of battery it takes and although the manual show a battery, I could not find it! (was unable to remove the other side)

EJ20 08-08-2013 08:56 PM

Happend to me 2 months ago (on my 08 landcruiser keyless fob) I went jet skiing and I totally forgot to put it in the water proof case... I was shocked when it was totally wet, but was surprised that nothing happened and till now it works perfectly :)

Btw, its the same design as the brz fob

The battery is on the other side, just pop the other side out. This is also how I tested the dead fob starting technique by starting the car without the fob battery, worked just like manual said it would. Pretty cool nonetheless.

Kimsey47 08-08-2013 08:58 PM

Looks and sounds like the water proofing worked swimmingly... Yeah, horrible joke but had to post it.

StickThatClutch 08-08-2013 10:50 PM

Better than taking the BRZ for a swim. Good save.

DeepHunta 08-10-2013 05:48 PM

good to know!

Ibanez 08-11-2013 12:02 PM

I did this with my Altima years ago. Almost crapped my pants when my car started.

Glad to know the BRZ has a good key for forgetful people like me!

You forgot the "puts sunglasses on" part.

Not quite. You should be thanking Denso engineers, that's who really designed it.

Dropped my keys on a dirty public bathroom floor, instinctively threw the keys in the sink with soap... Oops. But after a nice rinse the key fob still works :)
