What do you want to use it for? If it's only to record "accident" or as a security, cheap ones under 100$ will usually be all you need.

This is the one I have, works pretty good.

BlackVue DR500GW-HD (Plus Power Magic Pro so you can use the parking mode capability - if you're into that).

Everyone always talks about the BlackVue, so probably that. I heard there used to be overheating issues, but most of those kinks got worked out AFAIK.

Yeah, I have the BlackView 500 and it has these air vents in it. I just hooked it up to the power-saving thing so that it will work with the car turned off, and it's been awesome! Very clear videos, even at night. Worth it, IMO. Or buy one of them cheap ones and find out that they did not record correctly or did not record at all when you're at the scene of the accident. :)

It will pay for itself soon, someone has used it to fight a court ticket, but mostly for insurance claims.

bumperhumper 08-06-2013 12:48 PM

I'm also looking to buying one. Haven't pulled the trigger, but from my research the best option seems to be the Blackvue 500. Definitely going to get the power magic pro along with it so I can have it record while parked to catch any vandals vandalizing! :paddle:

My only concern is the visibility of the camera from the outside. Don't want it being a target for break and take

Can you see my dashcam?

Just a word of warning. In hotter climates, Texas here, leaving the dashcam in the car can damage the battery. My dashcam's battery expanded and broke the PCB inside my camera.

Inside the car, it can get above 140F. :/

I have the black view dr400. Its silver colored (an unfortunate thing cause pretty noticable from outside) and does get really hot but no issues so far and the video quality is good. But it is a little hard to read plates when everything is in motion

pascalbrax 08-07-2013 08:23 AM

I use AutoBoy and a fixed phone holder.

Razz 08-07-2013 12:19 PM

Thanks, for the input.

Any other suggestions?

I really need one that has good night vision.

For a cheap $100 camera the Livue LB100 is working well for me:

You can find examples of the night video on youtube.

Best bang for the buck, definitely the DVR-027. $50 shipped and it does all that I want it to. 720p HD. I plan to get a bunch of them and outfit all my cars with one.

I've recorded this yesterday for you with AutoBoy (this is the free version). It starts in a rural road with (almost) no lights, joins on city roads and ends in an underground car park.

All it needs is an Android phone and a better phone holder than mine. :)

It was on a trip back home from a Norcal meet back in April. The twisties didn't last long but it was still fun and had really nice scenery.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but you can choose whether you want the sound on or off while editing the camera settings. The only way I've found to do this is on the Computer after plugging the SD card in and going through the application and then going into the settings menu.

Here's a video with some lights and then goes really dark prior to having HID's.

and here's a video completely dark after having HID's. I don't have a video with HID's and some lighting lol.

wasn't sure if this would help or not, but figured i'd just upload in case it does.

You can also toggle voice recording on/off by touching the left sensor of the 500 (where the wifi led icon is). :o

Obsidiank 08-09-2013 12:12 AM

I bought the DR500GW and installed it tonight. It took me about 30 minutes to get it mounted and connected to the power magic pro. So far extremely happy with the results. First night driving and caught this motorcycle completely flying through a redlight. Had I been driving any faster, I could have easily collided with it. He even had a girl riding behind him, what an asshat.

Did you had to use a couple of those Add-a-Circuit?

yeah, went to autozone and picked up two of these ATM add a circuits

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ier=32416_0_0_

Also picked up a pack of 7.5 AMP ATM Blade fuses and a pack of 10 AMP ATM blade fuses. Annoying that I couldn't buy just one of each but it was 3 dollars. Whatever.

I tapped the STOP(7.5) Fuse for constant and the DRL(10) Fuse for ACC+
