Plasti-Dipped lower front bumper

Not sure what exactly to call that part, but i taped it off and plasti-dipped it. Very happy with how well it turned out and how easy it was to do!

Thought about doing this myself on my firestorm, now I have an awesome idea of what it would look like, haven't decided if it's for me yet, but I do like it, good job and thanks for sharing!

finallyfi 08-02-2013 08:36 PM

Looks good! I like the contrast against the red.

rikdrt1 08-15-2013 03:23 AM

that looks great. I wonder what would look good on a RAVEN fr-s ?
gray - red ??
I guess I should try it and see ... hmm

aakash 08-15-2013 09:49 AM

did u get clean lines when you peeled back the tape? usually plasti dip will tear when dry if you are removing the edge taping. if not how did you do it?

l0aded 08-15-2013 04:53 PM

How will this effect cleaning the car in general? I imagine cleaners won't do so well or even take off the plastidip coat eventually.

Leonardo 08-15-2013 06:05 PM

I did this to my car too. All the new cars have the center black. http://www.gtspirit.com/wp-content/u...by-SR-Auto.jpg Plastidip, is easy to clean. I have washed mine with soap and a rag.

Ammonia 08-15-2013 06:37 PM

Dude that looks legendary. I'm gonna do it.

Nice job man! It's a must have look I reckon for 86s.

The method is you spray 3 to 4 heavy coats of dip with minimal drying time between coats and while its still wet you peel the masking tape, that way the dip hasn't had time to dry and bond with the tape yet and you get clean lines when you peel. I got this technique from dipyourcar.com, he's got a youtube channel under the same name, check him out.

Ndgreely 08-15-2013 11:08 PM

What did you do to prep the painted area before you sprayed it ?

Wes 08-16-2013 12:00 AM

Looks good! I wonder how this would look on Asphalt, haven't seen anyone doing this to it, seems like it might blend in though.

FRSSS 08-16-2013 12:34 AM

Plastidip

Instead of painter's masking tape try black vinyl electrician's tape instead.
Produced a cleaner finished edge without the plastidip adhering.

chriscross_tnt 08-16-2013 12:41 AM

Looks clean. Not bad at all.

Keeping minimal drying time in between coats is usually the way to do it, plus spraying a new coat on top of barely dry plastidip also liquifies the bottom coats enough so that by the time you finish the last coat, not even the first bottom coats have bonded to the tape yet, so you'll get a clean line when you peel the tape as soon as you finish your last coat.

Leonardo 08-16-2013 01:52 PM

I used goof off on a rag to prep the area.

ein311 08-16-2013 05:15 PM

Nice! I did the same to my Firestorm FR-S and the look quickly grew on me.
I didn't do nearly the amount of taping as you did though... haha

Also to get the lines clean, I remove the tape that touches the plastidip immediately after I finish my last coat. If I let it set too long, the dip will lift off with the tape.

I use Windex with vinegar and a microfiber cloth to prep. It's worked on everything I dipped.

Same thing happened to me. I re-taped off the 1" x 2" area that peeled off, and resprayed it. The plastidip "seemed" together after several coats. Now you cant see the fixed area.

elBarto 08-16-2013 07:23 PM

Did this with my Firestorm GT86 in mid-may but I used white plasti-dip
Black looked to me like it was missing a piece of his lip:

To easy to pass up on at least trying .. Really just wanted to see how it would look .. Not quite even . I'll straighten it out on the next round

Thorpedo 08-22-2013 10:51 PM

I went one step further. Decent protection from cones. Don't mind the dirt and the bugs.

For this reason alone I wish I didn't have an asphalt lol. The whiteouts looks amazing with this done!

IgnitionGundam 08-23-2013 01:49 AM

I'm gonna do this on mine. Only thing I was worried about is leaving the plastidip on for long periods of time in hot weather. I saw what plastidip did to some of the other cars on this forum. So I was thinking about covering that bottom part with vinyl first before i plasti dipped it.

Care to link to "what it did to other cars"?

FR-Slide 08-23-2013 01:14 PM

Been on the fence about this. Really like the look, but from some angles it looks like the car is missing it's lower lip...

I've got a roll of gloss black vinyl that I might use (instead of dip) to try it out...Would probably look better/more complete with an actual lower lip installed, to "frame" the negative space from the blacked out center section.

Interesting! It seems the colored varieties bleed through into the clear. I wonder if the black/white could do the same thing?

FRS1010 08-24-2013 10:40 PM

If it did bleed through I would just wrap it with vinyl then.

TheThunderbird 08-25-2013 11:33 PM

Has anyone done this or something like it to the front bumper on a BRZ?
