Break in's over!

Look out cook out!

Now to change the shift indicator warning..... I was thinking that turning it off entirely is the best idea.

I've been level headed, without babying the engine during this first 1K mi. My revs would approach and sometimes top 4K without going more than 4200 rpm during spirited shifts. I feel pretty good about the restraint that I displayed. Felt that pushing it a little was a good thing however.

Contemplating an oil change tomorrow.

I hit 900 yesterday and threw my restraint away doing a couple of 5500 shifts... lol...

It's close enough...

OICU812 08-01-2013 08:17 PM

I hit this in 3rd day of ownership lol.

WolfsFang 08-01-2013 08:24 PM

My break in ended when I drove the car off the lot :D

torqdork 08-01-2013 08:35 PM

Heh, after babying mine, the first redline shift was @1,004 miles last weekend. Such a sweet sound, like a well-tuned inline 4 and at least as smooth.

Might as well shut off the light, it blinks at redline regardless.

What oil and filter will you use? I'm switching to Redline 0W-20, what the TRD-prepped celebrity race cars use. Still undecided on which filter, tho.

Have fun... don't do anything I wouldn't do. Wait.. that's pretty much nothing. Nevermind. :bellyroll:

I'm going with Toyota 0w-20... at 7 bucks a quart and 7.50 for an OEM filter... you can't really get a better deal...

Mad_Mike 08-01-2013 09:07 PM

Break in period? What break in period? lol.:burnrubber:

Oh? That's synthetic, right? Plus I get monthly mailers from my dealer for parts and service specials, currently 20% off. It would also keep the car under warranty just in case of an oil related failure.

I know routine service is included in our cars, but I don't let anyone else touch my cars. Call it bonding, justifiable paranoia or just the pleasure of working on the car, I'd rather do it myself.

yep, full synthetic.

I'm doing the 1000 mile oil change (because I can, dammit!) this weekend... I just need to do 70 more miles...

d4wt 08-01-2013 09:28 PM

grats!

it's funny how 1k takes forever but it'll be 5k before yah know it

brntrinh 08-01-2013 09:47 PM

being up in canada, i thought the break in was at 1000 km (it's been 1000km for everything else i've driven). boy was i disappointed when i realized it was actually 1600km

Migero86 08-01-2013 09:49 PM

Picking mine up tomorrow and I hope to get over Break-In period within the week :) All my other cars I drove them like I stole them from day one with no issues, but this time I may try the engineered method :)

J. Moore 08-01-2013 10:20 PM

congrats, I have another 700 miles to go...hopefully done in 2 weeks!

IjustwantaGT86 08-02-2013 06:59 PM

I'm at 1100 since last Saturday, I still haven't gone over 5k though. Perhaps tonight!

Chad 08-02-2013 07:04 PM

Congrats it was sure tough for me to restrain those revs during the break-in period lol..

Was about to ask the same question...

I'm at 250kms .... long way to go.

I've touched 5000rpm for a sec when passing a slow moving car.

I was told that the best break in was to vary rpm's constantly and not use cruise control.

Yeah, me too. I really won't drive it much differently either. There is so many theories/personal opinions about this.

I do this during break ins (vary the rpm). I've heard it's better for the cylinder walls. This will be the third new car I will do this on. But as stated earlier, there are many different theories on what to do, if anything.

Luis_GT 08-04-2013 03:54 PM

This car just loves to be redlined... it just invites you to take it by the scruff of its neck!

bumperhumper 08-04-2013 06:07 PM

Woohoo I just joined the club as of two days ago. At 1100 now!

Right on! For me it was as soon as they handed me the keys!

^ same lol

Fluxx 08-04-2013 09:55 PM

I took mine through the range since I got it, but never went above 6k. I wouldn't hold it at high revs, but I didn't shy away from taking it up into the rev range. I hit the 1,000 mile mark on day four of ownership.

There may be a lot of "theories" out there but they are all wrong.

Subaru recommended break in is required for long engine life and good performance.

Anyone who suggests otherwise is just wrong. Period.

I agree, and I myself am going through the break in period per those instructions. I was merely stating that it all depends on who you ask. I ask the manual since the engineers who built the engine said that was the break in process.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 08-05-2013 06:07 PM

I think you should do the after break-in oil change alot of people said on here that it felt a bit more free revving afterwards and the less metal particulates in the filter and oil the better I guess.

TrogDor the Burninator 08-05-2013 06:07 PM

Test drives, dealership personnel ... my car had 89 miles on it when I got it ... can't imagine there was any adherence to low RPMs :)

lexusb3 08-05-2013 08:10 PM

I boosted it during the "break in period" lol

Optimus Prime 08-05-2013 09:28 PM

yup, I was kinda excited to end the break-in myself. Don't worry, nobody was within a 1/2 mile of me.

That was my point. I'm agreeing with you.

This is incorrect as it happens. The break in requires that the rings lose metal to the oil in order that they match the cylinder bores exactly. The metal filings end up in the oil filter. It doesn't matter when you do the break in the metal still ends up in the filter. The trouble with waiting to do the break in is the rings may never grind down enough to seal properly.

This is a faily simple process and Subaru tells you exactly what to do in the owners manual. Just do that and your engine will produce the designed power and use little or no oil for 200,000 km or more. Don't follow the instructions and your engine WILL burn oil, eventually.

I wouldn't change the oil until at least 5,000 miles. Used oil analyses have shown that the oil is fine and there is no need to change the oil so early.

Plus the additional moly, zinc, and phosphorus from the factory fill is probably beneficial for a full break-in and will probably be more robust that any oil that you replace it with (unless you switch to a race oil).
