CAMSHAFTS! have they made any?

Has anyone heard of any aftermarket cams or Any to come? I've been looking everywhere forsome, & haven't heard of any in development

If you're the adventurous type (which it sounds like from your post wanting it dive straight to cams), why not try to contact companies out there for a custom grind. If not, contact them to express your interest. Maybe they'll look into it. Only ones I've ever heard was the prototype HKS ones that may be tailored for forced induction duties.

Ditto on what ^^ said. Plus, don't see the reason if you wont be pushing 400+ HP

I could definitely see a reason for it in the proper all-motor application.

Agreed with xjohnx.

Cams could help an aggressive NA build and I'm hoping some companies eventually release some for this purpose. Alas, nothing yet.......

wouldn't large cams be great for our motor? From my understanding large cams equal power higher in the rpm range? Im just hoping for 280 cams priced the same as sti cams.

See this is was I was figuring. I wanna do an N/A build & cams & a tune sound like a great start to me

HKS has some. Tomei is working on some and I think a couple of the Turbo vendors are running some like Accelerated Performance

Cams are hard to change on boxers. You'd have to be an extreme NA diehard to basically rebuild your motor and build it for NA. Probably make about the same power as many off the shelf FI kits and cost twice as much. The power band would be moved up too. I'd really like to do a NA build but the lack of parts is making the decision to go FI pretty easy.

R3d 08-02-2013 07:31 AM

:laughabove:What he said is probably right on the money. I wanted to keep it NA and get another 100 hp and my sources tell me that IF I can make that from NA, witch would be hard, it would run me way more money then a simple turbo !

Jive Turkey 08-02-2013 09:27 AM

it comes down to how deep your pockets are and how commited you are to the car. while many are saying yes you can slap on FI and make the same power there is way more than putting a kit on involved. NA would be more hassle free when done right.

the biggest issue is that its a boxer motor so unlike big V8's where you can pop the hood and have the head off, in our case we gotta pull the entire motor. Furhter more we have 4 cams. i'm sure kelford will make something, if they haven't already.

GSC Power Division is working on some as well.

It shouldn't be terribly long before we have a few options.

Last I heard the HKS were supposed to show up sometime in August, not sure if that is accurate anymore.

Yeah for GSC! I remember them from my EVO days. They did a really good job and weren't obscenely expensive.

For real.

They make some of the best Evo and Subaru cams on the market. I wouldn't expect anything less but great from them. They are an American company too.

Their STI cams have a street price around $850, I would expect our cars to be in that same price point.

kmbkk 08-02-2013 10:39 AM

That sounds reasonable to me. I'm sure it'll be a PITA to change them, but well worth it.

mid_life_crisis 08-02-2013 11:17 AM

Significant cam change would require stiffer springs, correct?
What effect would stiffer springs have on the variable valve timing mechanism?

industrial 08-02-2013 01:50 PM

Depends on what kind of cam you're running. High lift and high rpm would definitely require springs and retainers. Just higher duration may be ok with stock stuff. But on a boxer you can't just pop a valve cover and swap cams so the way I see it, you might as well do everything you're going to do to the block at once. Which is hard to do when nobody is making parts or experimenting with different setups.

I know people who can do valve adjustments without pulling the block, but yeah most times you're going to pull the block to do any head work.

jamesm 08-02-2013 02:09 PM

i hope they're out by the time my engine comes out for the build (winter time probably). i'm definitely only doing cams if the engine is already out lol.

cf6mech 08-02-2013 02:13 PM

I do believe Ferrea is close to having some available.

Freshfrs86 11-04-2013 06:16 PM

This is what I'm waiting on also. Good advice out there!

No Limit Motorsport 11-04-2013 07:35 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some debut at SEMA this week.
