any one has Transmission Rattle like me ?

:brokenheart:
I noticed this issue since I bought the car and driving when the AC is on. The transmission will rattle with the shift nob for couple seconds after slow down my speed to 10 -15 mph . Is that common ?

When the AC is off. No issue at all.:burnrubber:

SpectreRT 07-26-2013 03:06 PM

I've had the rattle when the A/C is on and off. The mechanics say its "normal" clutch chatter for the FR-S / BRZ. There are a bunch of threads on this.

IMO, get it to the shop and have them document it. In the event of a failure/TSB - at least you'll have a paper trail of the issue. Just my $0.02.

Do you have a MT or AT ... ??

My MT doesn't rattle.

I actually noticed this pretty early on (accompanied with an idle dip). The service guy at toyota told me the same as above, that it's normal and just a by product of the condenser being on....but I don't know how i feel about that.

EDIT: i drive an MT

My AT doesn't have a rattle

If yours is manual transmission, you're in 2nd gear at 10-15 mph (1250-1800 RPM), and step on the gas to accelerate, then yes, it will rattle. But it should happen regardless of your AC being on or off.

I need to add something. The rattle happens when I am shift to Neutral .

MT, rattle after shift to neutral

husker741 07-28-2013 02:40 PM

Mine does it.

This happens to me. Climbing into somewhat steep driveways, I slow down but I don't want to downshift into 1st while the car is moving so I keep it in 2nd and go really slow and when I try to give it a bit of gas, I hear that rattle. Is this the issue you're talking about? If so, I'm concerned. I only got my car a 10 days ago.

Mine never rattles in neutral. Maybe you are talking about direct injection noise. There is a thread about it in issue warranty section of this forum.

Here

That's normal for this type of clutch. Nothing to worry about.

Care to explain to a newbie like me what "this type of clutch" means?

Normal.. Clutch chatter in these cars are normal at low rpm.. The drop in revs with the AC on will also make the engine vibrate and studder as the revs drop too low and then pick back up.

topazsparrow 07-29-2013 10:17 AM

Every-time the clutch rattle thread comes up everyone says "It's normal don't worry about it". The thing is, nobody every provides a reason WHY its considered normal. Nobody has provided a solution for it yet either.

Because they are mechanical parts with free play. Example, you can crawl under your car while it's stopped and rotate the driveshaft back and forth a bit, that's the free play, and that is only ONE of the reason the whole drivetrain is noisy, that and because this car has very little sound deadening. The drivetrain is under constant load and unload when you drive. The clutch has springs that are also under constant load and unload, that can also make noise.

Whats different about the FRS and BRZ when compared to all the other MT cars on the road that don't do this?

You mention the sound deadening but surely that would do little to hide the flywheel / clutch rattle these cars have.

And don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting its defective or broken, I'm just saying it's odd. It's unusual for even the cheapest of new cars to make noises like this.

I'm a newbie too when it comes to mechanical stuff. I'm just typing this from my memory. 1st to 3rd gears of this car have triple cone synchros. Better to have you Google it to find out what it is than I try to explain it. But this the cause of "jar of marbles" noise and it is normal.

They all do this (standard transmission cars). Most cars on the roads are automatic transmission and are usually less noisy.
FWD also make less noise because they are drive-shaft less.

Shneegle 07-29-2013 02:50 PM

This "rattle" noise is happening on mine as well every so often when I shift into Neutral. As it being normal on a RWD MT car I cant say as my previous 2 RWD MT cars didn't do that at all.

Yea but the MR2 is just a FWD drivetrain in the wrong side.:bellyroll:
My 350Z made all the noise the FR-S did. The worst is on multiple speed bumps with lot's of clutch in and out.

Anybody familiar with clutch noise on some Ducatis?? Premium bikes with noisy drivetrain? It's just the way things are.

I didn't mention a MR2. The car before this was a 240sx with an SR20DET swap. That car while being 20+ years old would rattle but did not have the same rattle from the drivetrain.

My FRS is the 13'th car I've owned. The majority of which were standard transmissions. They all varied in age and condition. 4 of them were RWD.

I'm not unfamiliar with cars in the least.

None of them have made noises like this unless they where in need of repair. Your answer is a prime example of what I was saying. Lots of people pipe up and say "don't worry about it, it's normal" and I'm not arguing that. It's just that nobody can give me a specific reason (that isn't their own pure SPECULATION) as to what is causing the rattle and so far nobody has even given speculation as to what might remedy it.

Frankly I'm not concerned. I just think people should avoid saying "Don't worry about it, I heard it's normal" when they don't even really know the actual cause.

Well I explained it up there but hey, beleive what you want. Some vehicles are noisy from the factory, there isn't anything to "fix" them as per say.

topazsparrow 07-29-2013 03:41 PM

It'd be faster if you just said you're not sure what causes the rattle. If you knew, you would be able to identify the part or parts that could be re-worked / modified / replaced to eliminate the noise. It could be a tight clearance on a dust shield for all we know. I'd be interested to hear from the guys who have upgraded to a lightweight flywheel and aftermarket clutch.

This isn't a 15 year old jeep with a combination of parts that are a little sloppy that culminate in a problem you have a hard time diagnosing... this is a brand new car.

If you're talking about the noise that happens when you're in neutral, it might be the direct injection noise.

The last car I drove that had this .... "rattle", was a poorly tuned S15 SR20DET w/ 6-speed transmission swap into a 240SX.

Why was this important?

1) the poor tune resulted in the revs dropping too fast. The IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) was not keeping RPMs high enough and it dropped close to/below 600.
2) dual mass clutch/flywheel setup tend to make more noise, especially when the entire drivetrain is shaking abnormally (from a low idle)

My car makes this exact same noise. I know the low revs between shifts with the AC on is causing it... I'm just too lazy to take it to the dealer to have them fix the idle issue. If this is caused by RPMs too low after a shift into neutral, it's an ECU tune issue plain and simple.

And FWIW: my car's idle drops to "normal" about 10-15 seconds after an overnight cold startup.

In case you don't know what a dual mass flywheel is:

http://www.zf.com/brands/content/en/...dmf_SACHS.html

The root cause (if this is happening when shifting into neutral) is either a ECU tune (most likely), or a bad transmission/clutch design that is prone to noise when load input is changed suddenly (least likely).

Is the FRS flywheel a dual mass as well? That certainly might explain the shakes the motor gets at 1650 - 1850 rpm in neutral... and the noise.

EDIT: More info about dualmass flywheels: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbvP5EvpUbA"]ZF zms dual mass flywheel for passanger cars - YouTube[/ame]

mav1178 07-29-2013 06:12 PM

It's more of a "what manual car doesn't have dual mass flywheels" these days...

Ever since Aisin came out with the compact 6-speed RWD transmission, virtually all the cars running the Aisin 6-speed is running a dual mass flywheel.

Do your engine a favor and downshift into first.

It's really hard to shift into first unless I'm completely stopped or crawling speeds of less than 5 kph. I mean, I can downshift into first at higher speeds but it requires a lot of force to get into to the gate, and it just feels like I shouldn't be doing that.

I don't own an FRS or BRZ, but I understand the feeling you're getting, but I also think the engine is probably "lugging" in 2nd gear up the hill at low speeds.

Then it's not your transmission. It's direct injection. And it's normal. When I bought the car, the sales person explained about this noise to me before I left. I'm glad he did. I would've been worried too. :)
