FHI Started Production of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86

- Line-off ceremony took place at the Subaru Main Plant in Japan -

Tokyo, March 16, 2012 - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, announced that it held a line-off ceremony at Subaru's Gunma Main Plant (Ota-city, Gunma Prefecture, Japan) with Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) President Akio Toyoda and honored guests in attendance, in commemoration of the production start of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.
FHI and TMC first agreed on business collaboration in October 2005. After the companies expanded their cooperative ties with new agreements related to development and production in April 2008, they then began four years of development. The completion of this joint-development product also marks a great achievement of the alliance between FHI and TMC.
At the ceremony, TMC President Akio Toyoda said, "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the ceaseless efforts of all FHI people and staff who were involved in the development, production and preparations for both models. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 not have been successfully developed without collaboration between FHI and TMC. We started the alliance for mutual growth in 2005. Now I'm delighted to see this moment that our alliance surely bore fruit."
FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, after extending his gratitude to all participants at the ceremony, said, "the car symbolizes our corporate strategy in two significant aspects: good progress of our alliances; and advancement of our "select and focus" approach. The start of production today made a huge step for us, but it is not our goal. By constantly refining both models, TMC and FHI hope to nourish each model to be loved by customers all over the world for a long time to come."
Subaru Gunma Main Plant, where minicars were previously manufactured, was recently renewed for the Subaru
BRZ and Toyota 86 production. FHI plans to produce the Impreza at the same plant by March 2013.
FHI offers "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" to its customers through the Subaru brand statement "Confidence in
Motion" and its consistent approach to "Engineering excellence".

Interesting strategy. Starting to build cars on a Friday! This is one time I'd be happy to have a car built on a Friday. :P

Good news to hear

Dadhawk 03-16-2012 08:10 AM

Great news!

Interesting photo with the two company Presidents shaking hands with a BRZ and T-86 in the background. That's the most pronounced difference in the two front ends I've noticed in photos. I have to say, I definitely prefer the 86/FRS front end even more now.

(K) 03-16-2012 08:16 AM

Sadly, not a USDM BRZ in sight...but at least production started.

ZetaVI 03-16-2012 08:23 AM

The pic of the BRZ's on the production line is awesome. :coolpics:

brzmaybe 03-16-2012 09:03 AM

Let's see now... let's assume that they start the assembly line at the rate of 100 cars/day. After a week or so for the Japanese initial run, they can start filling car carrier ships that leave port say, 3 weeks later. The cars appear in dealerships 3-4 weeks after that. That rough estimate puts cars arriving at US Subaru and Scion dealerships in early to mid-May, depending upon your closest coast.

Would those with more insight agree?

DantKR 03-16-2012 09:40 AM

These damn things are going to be on lots before we have a damn price.

Jayvelliott 03-16-2012 09:45 AM

They are building a lot of cars. It doesn't seem like a lot because of only 6k coming to America. But there is also the whole world to build this car for. In one year they will build at least 30-40k cars for all markets combine

Do Boy 03-16-2012 10:10 AM

Subaru stated "Late Spring" at NAIAS. So that sounds roughly correct.

So Japan will get the first ones in a few weeks in early to mid April. Nice! We should be seeing some production testing soon!

Zaku 03-16-2012 11:27 AM

Great news, but I find it interesting about how they did PR with the event. Spies have had pictures of 86 and BRZ sitting on the lot being loaded to truck for shipment for at least a month. and were not talking about a couple on the lot we are talking full lots. Still great news thanks for sharing.

ZetaVI 03-16-2012 11:34 AM

The video is pretty cool. Shows how awesome the PR event was and the joint venture of both Subaru and Scion.

The joint venture was between Subaru and Toyota. Scion is just a small part of Toyota.

Opps. I didn't even noticed I mistakenly put Scion instead of Toyota.

Still no price? this is seriously getting rediculess, is the price going to be a surprise when you sit down with the the dealer?

All this time, and I'm still not used to the rear tail lights

I don't know much about manufacturing, but maybe there's produced then there's mass produced?

Maybe the first cars were only produced using only a certain percentage of the factory's capacity; instead of 100 cars a day it was only 5?

"Officially underway" sounds they're comfortable with the end products enough to start with mass producing.

According to this
http://car-research.jp/subaru/brz-86.html ,
their manufacture line produces 1,400/month; 1,000 Hachirokus & 400 BRZs.

Also it says the earliest date the people in Japan get one will be sometime in July.....

Makes sense I guess. I remember the Camaro started production in January 2009 and people couldnt have them until late March/early April

:word: STI Concept had 100% better taillight design. I hope they bring these in for the refresh.

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...H2I-5RcbtUU17Q

Glad to see production is underway.

DeepHunta 03-16-2012 01:34 PM

Phew, finally! They "officially" announce production start. And yet no US pricing thus far!? What a pain. I really do think the BRZ will be sold at markup......if that is that case then I have no quarells in buying the Scion version at a cheaper price and less limited amounts. Drives similar anyways and you can still drift it the same on track days ;)

And if that doesn't work.....It's Mini John Cooper Works for me, FML! hahaha. (But no, I'm serious..jcw)

I don't buy these numbers, way too low. 400 BRZs/month doesn't even cover the sales target for the NA market alone.

They were probably just prototypes and test models for reviews and/or test drives. Probably explaining the orange peel paint problem, or awkward gaps with plastics in the interior on some models.

Yeah I will probably be going for the refresh. If anything is changed drastically to uglier, a cheaper 1st gen Zx6 used is also fine
