FIAT 500

anyone driven one?

if my finances don't pan out for the FRS/BRZ i'll have to suck it up and get some shitty car for daily use until my wife gets a job.

so i was thinking of either a Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, or the Fiat 500 (MINI is too fucking baller when bought new)

anyone here have any firs thand experience with the Fiat? It's pretty much a chrysler, no?

SteelReign 03-15-2012 11:08 AM

Never drove any of the cars you listed but why not add the Honda Fit to your list? Its always getting top marks in this class.

Capt Canuck 03-15-2012 11:17 AM

Driven a Panda, but not a 500; however, I have driven the Fiesta - as I had one as a car hire - and thought it was great. If I needed a new commuter car/city car, I'd happily have one of those :-)

chulooz 03-15-2012 11:19 AM

Used isnt an option for you? New cars cost ya.

7thgear 03-15-2012 11:46 AM

i want a 0kms, factory warrenty, and 100% history of what happened and didn't happen to the car.

There is a 12 year old VW and a 10 year old accord at my parents place that was bought new, the cars are still running strong.

when i got my subaru, i bought it used, i though i got a good deal. After all the cash i put into it i could have been driving in a brand new wrx or something.

i used to have a garage to work on my cars, now i don't. So i need a car that is small, good on gas, and won't give me any headaches for 5-6 years.

i still want the FRS, but when it comes down for the hammer time the price might kill me. (i have a feeling it will be well over 32 grand (cad) after taxes and all the other fun stuff)

I test drove a 500. There was something about it I just didn't like but can't put my finger on. I used to drive a Smart Car which I loved so it's not the size. Just something felt off about it.

tranzformer 03-15-2012 12:44 PM

Hyundai offers good value if you want a new car.

7thgear 03-15-2012 12:47 PM

has to pass the wife factor lol

How does the seating feel? is it pretty low to the ground? Just looking at the car it makes me think the seating would feel like sitting on a bar stool when turning. I'm thinking of the time I drove a PT cruiser and couldn't believe how "high up" it felt.

So what does she want? Small "cute" car?

not really, depends on the car.

She likes the Honda CRZ but not Civic, she likes the Mini but not the Smart.

she likes the RX7 but not the RX8. She likes the first gen miatas (with the flip lights) but thinks all the new ones are ugly.

hard to please!

ahausheer 03-15-2012 01:06 PM

Sat in a few 500's and they all felt very cheap and their reliability is suspect, also if they were that great they would be selling more than 2 a month. I would recommend the yaris. The fiestas interior is very tight and claustrophobic for me and im thin and love small cars. But try each out as cars a so personal. I recommend the Yaris or Honda Fit

Will she be driving it mostly? CRZ isn't a bad option if you are ok with its limitations (not great mpg, not great of a sporty car; kinda mediocre at both).

What about a used first gen Miata? I know you want new, but you could get a nicely used Miata for cheap?

zoomzoomers 03-15-2012 01:19 PM

How about that new Hyundai Elantra? There's a coupe and a 5 door GT version (dunno how GT it is LOL). They're both CHEAP!

I love my CRZ it's a nice balance of comfort, efficiency, and performance.

The 500 did feel a little like you're sitting ontop of something rather then in something if that makes any sense.

I love a low semi reclined seeting postion (Low H-point). Many people like sitting up high and having good visibility, but they can have their SUV's while I dodge them in my BRZ.

I understand your pain. My wife got a 2005 Legacy used. Appeared to be in great shape. We put almost $5k into it last year. We seriously considered abandoning it at the place servicing it and cutting our losses. It wasn't all at once though so what started as a few hundred dollars piled up over the course of the year. The car probably isn't worth the $5k we ended up spending on it last year. Right now we'd probably be thrilled if someone stole it and drove it off a bridge. We intend to trade it in for a BRZ (or something) eventually and I don't expect to get much for it (at all).

My car we bought new and it has cost us less (or nearly less) than my wife's used car and will probably be in our possession for a good long time to come.

More on topic: My wife really likes the new Fiesta and Focus. They aren't too pricey and it really seems like Ford has stepped up their game. This is from a woman who would otherwise not give a domestic car the time of day (hates large, bulky, etc US designs).

CSSM 03-15-2012 01:44 PM

I sat in a 500, it was very comfortable. I was amazed by the comfort of the seats, and the interior did not seem cheap (and I had just drove a new BMW to the Fiat dealer). My dad and I were about sold on the car, which is why I am seriously considering the Abarth.

M-17 03-15-2012 01:44 PM

Some guy near my shop has a Fiat 500 "Gucci Edition" in white. I told him that's cute , but I did ask him if liked it and he said he enjoys it so far, so no complaints there. He liked the fact it was Gucci and decently good on gas.

Holy shit, he actually has one of those? One of my neighbors has joked about getting one of those but even he (and he's pretty over the top) feels like they are gauche.

I'll give him this, the car looks nice up close but I would never want one, its just too girly imo.

DIG1992 03-15-2012 05:55 PM

Never drove one but they do look good up close and I think the Abarth is the better half.

i drove a 500 as a rental when i was on vacation in and around the rockies in AB for about 2000km - one of the worst POS ive ever driven, the stupid auto box changing up and down all the time for no reason, engine management light came on for 80% of the jorney it was gutless and slow, did not feel big enough for the highways over there, felt cheap, made me feel like i had been castrated too

dont do it!

himbo 03-18-2012 12:28 AM

I test drove this car and couldn't stop laughing because it was so much fun. Only 100hp, but honestly, its plenty quick. I loved it completely!

switchlanez 03-18-2012 02:28 AM

I rented one. Felt cheap and imbalanced (like all the weight was way up front) not fun to steer around. Are you looking for new or used? The new Yaris feels pretty ballsy and slightly refined. Veloster is another option. Or my personal recommendation: Suzuki SX4. It's twin to the Fiat Sedici (the 500's big brother) designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. It's the more masculine direct competitor to the Mini. Comes with transferable 7 year/100k warranty. Available in AWD or the FWD Sportback has lowered sporty suspension and aero package. 2010 was the best year with digital climate control, key-less start, and 6-speed manual. The optional tech package (navi, steering wheel controls) doesn't cost much and is an excellent value. Has an airy cabin which my passengers love.
