Attachment 55240 NOTE: THIS IS NOT A "TRUE DUAL" AC UNIT; IT IS 99.9 PLUG AND PLAY. THIS IS JUST THE WAY I DID IT. Enjoy! :party0030: |

So this will be a perfect mod if you get the toggle switches to work. Have the knobs work just like on the FRS seems like a great compromise considering it will last forever VS electrical components that fail eventually.

Lol 2nd video. Wtf?
Just tryin to have a little fun in making a video lol
Is it fully funtional?
Ill explain in DIY....yes and no
2nd video ftw
Knew you could figure it out!!!!
KLM!! |
lol @ vidoes. yeah cant wait to see final product
Ready for more.
how much did the parts cost? p/ns?
In for DIY and lol videos
intrested in more info...
Looking forward to this! Whats going on with your key by the way?
Do not care for dual since the cabin is small. If I can get this then I will keep the car and not sale/trade in when this comes standard on future FR-S.
This is the only thing more I wish they would offer on the FRS.
Interesting...it would be something I'd do some day in for the DIY
Looking forward to making my Premium+ BRZ with this mod.

Alright guys.
First off thanks for the responses and the interest! OK so I was up till 3am this morning trying to figure out if I really needed those three switch extenders...turns out I think better when I sleep :bonk: I ended up take the GT86 unit apart and removing the chip board (crazy, I know, but it WON'T work in out american FRSs/Premium BRZ's). Why? because our FRS/Prem. BRZ have MANUAL temp, fan speed and position switches, while the GT86 and Limited BRZ have the correct harness and ECU to read the board and to AUTOMATICALLY set its self. anyway, so I took the stock position, fan speed, and temp switches out of my FRS and disassembled them. Abyer taking the GT86 unit apart, I came across a plastic gear that is turned when you turn the Silver knob on the face of the GT86 unit. INSIDE of the stock FRS switches, there are "Jog-wheels" that physically turn the harness adaptor to connect to the option you choose; (Feet only, Head only, Feet and Head... etc) For the Fan Position (AC, Cold, Mild, and hot) for the Temps I lined up the Jog-Wheel cranks to the inner Jog-Wheel of the STOCK FRS controls. This, in return, turns the back portion of the switch -> causing the person to choose the temp or position of the fan -> Physically turning the harness and sending that information to the ECU. (I know, it sounds CRAZY/wrong but its what I did; Refer to pictures and video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_24M5...ature=youtu.be I used a peice of cardboard to make a makeshift mold to hold it in place. I am going to have my buddy with a 3D printer to make these pieces in a few weeks. This part I dont like but I didnt/dont have instructions so I had to think :respekt: I used electrical tape to hold the Temp Switch and the Position Switch to line up with the Jog Wheel Crank. as for the Speed of the fan Switch, I am going to wait for my Buddy Adam to help me out; He is out of town right now but he is a master electronics assembler and can help with installing the fan into the center knob location. All in all, it works, for now.... This video is with the AC on and I am rolling over the controls of the Fan Sellector Switch. You can hear the head unit go on then off, and temp change. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRbyP...ature=youtu.be This video is of it all installed for now. The Fan switch is located behind of the GT86 Dual Unit, on the 2nd speed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd2u9...ature=youtu.be I am going need Adam to finsh wiring in the LEDs and the Switch connection extenders. As for right now, I am going to my local 86 meet in Lowell, MA. I will be back later soon with follow up. I am still in the writing process of the DIY with step by step. I am not trying to "troll", I am just trying to make it more clear how I did this and to avoid malfunction. There WILL BE a DIY! :happy0180: |
cant wait!
Sub'd. Awesome work, can't wait to see this finished.

OUFF can't wait dude! Also Let us know what parts are needed for the DIY
What key fob is that? Looks really nice.
So are the temp readouts not going to illuminate or are they just waiting on the wiring?

today was a crazy mod day. I will try to update everyday where I am in the build and what I have done that worked, or didn't work...consider this a "in progress DIY" because I am going off no instructions or layout...I am doing this the best way I can... First step is mounting the switches to turn in the GT86 unit. Next is electrical. final is rechecking brackets, connections, stableness and function. I was going to keep the three stock FR-S climate switches and use an internal gear to run the job wheel on each of the stock climate controls in the GT86 unit. THAT is a stupid idea. Why is it a stupid idea? because its like me sitting in my house, and asking the person next door to go check my mailbox, when all I need to do is get up and get it my self (LAME ANALOGY lol) In the back of the FR-S's climate unit, where are 6 connectors. 2 of them go to the fan speed switch, then one connector branches out to connect to the Temp switch and the Mode switch (fan position control). There are two turn-able controls that go in the back of 1) the temp control: to control the temp from "as cold as it will go" to "as hot as it can go". 2) The mode switch: Head only, feet old, head and feet, etc. I took the GT86 unit apart and used the LEFT (mode) and RIGHT (temp) side of the unit to stick the rotating connectors threw. I then attached the controls from the GT86 to the ends. To make the knob flush, I used some extra vinyl flooring I had lying around and made a makeshift brace to hold each control at the correct height and to insure stableness. Right now, the GT86 unit is in my car. It has the Mode and Temp switches installed and functioning. The fan speed switch, however, is still in its stock mount, but it is hanging through the bottom of the unit (where the bottom tray/USB port is located). I am going to see how I can make an extender to reach through the GT86 unit and mount the silver ring to make it turn. This is going to be tomorrows project....trying to find a way to install the fan speed switch... [ame]http://youtu.be/wMOTOJDGCaQ[/ame] All in all, today was a crazy mod day. I started working on this at 11am and it is almost 9. I need food and need to think and plan for my next move in the mod. But for now, enjoy some pictures I took today and a few videos. I sound upset but I'm not; after being outside for 8 hours lol just was a hot day in New England... [ame]http://youtu.be/gTa09re_5Y0[/ame] This is what I ended the day with  over all, I am happy to be at this point but still have a little ways to go. [ame]http://youtu.be/Sd9tv6hNHWI[/ame] Reason 89237237832647 why to get a Premium BRZ: DUAL CLIMATE :bonk: :happy0180: to be continued.... |
Do you think an ecu flash from a brz to an frs would help with getting some functionality?
Sent from a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X |
I don't think so because of the harness plugs...also the dual unit I am modding/using is from a wrecked GT86 so it might have used their style harness
Looking quite intricate...excellent work and perseverance!
Great job. Thank you for your hard work.
I already have an idea on how to go about installing the fan speed switch! If I get that done tomorrow, all that's left is running 6 or 7 red LEDs and installing the 3 push buttons on the bottom row for AC, defroster and inner air cycle!
I really love this panel as opposed to the Plain FRS one, but I think it would bug me if the digital readout didn't function. Unless you could make it say this:
