Real World MPG

Has anyone else been getting higher than EPA estimates? I'm really pleased with my 31-33 range consistent on every tank.

I have the limited 6sp manual.

Curious to see if auto owners are getting the 34+ range.

mav1178 07-09-2013 12:23 PM

http://www.fuelly.com/car/subaru/brz

Pretty accurate. I'm averaging ~27-28MPG overall, mostly from a ~3 mile commute daily on surface streets, and mostly freeway to other places outside of work.

I live on Long Island, NY and often drive on the LIE also known as "The world's largest driveway" and I get 27.3 avg for the lifetime. I'm satisfied :)

ihaskrayon 07-09-2013 12:32 PM

I've been getting about 29.9 so I'm happy

Sorry the cross-town 401 freeway in the Toronto region has you beat. It's basically stop and go 7 hours a day.

Cjymiller 07-09-2013 12:48 PM

Check the signature. That is with 16 mile commute and one night of fast driving a week.

thill 07-09-2013 12:51 PM

I am driving in mostly city traffic (I would say about 80% city, 20% hwy) with about 50% of that being stop and go and am averaging 26mpg with spirited driving. If I drove more highway and more conservatively I am sure I would be well over 30mpg.

BRZJonny 07-09-2013 12:57 PM

33 for me after 10k miles. I drive an AT Limited.

Admiral Ballsy 07-09-2013 01:06 PM

I got 29.5-31.5 over the winter, in the 33-34 range now. Quite pleased.

I see this being asked all the time. My best is 24mpg, It bloWs my mind when I see ppl get over 30 mpg.

evof3nd3r 07-09-2013 01:26 PM

How do you guys all drive so gingerly? My commute is 4 miles, all city, but I drive a hell of a lot farther on the weekends. I've been getting 24 to 27 mpg, at most. Limited 6MT.

WolfpackS2k 07-09-2013 01:33 PM

My lifetime average is around 29 mpg for my BRZ Limited. I'd say that's 60/40 hwy to city driving, with most highway driving being 75+ mph.

jeffchap 07-09-2013 01:35 PM

After 2000 miles, I'm averaging right at 30 mpg with my 6mt. Car is stock, but with a Unichip controller.

I'm averaging about 24 MPG, but it's pretty much all city driving. Since I'm still brekaing it in, I don't want to go over 4K very much, but come on, it happens sometimes :party0030:.

Combustion engines are most efficient at constant speed constant load.

So cruise control with rpm's under 3.5k rpms will net you 30+ mpg pretty easily. If I take a shitty way to work I'll get <25 mpg, if I take the route with smooth flowing traffic I'll be well over 25 mpg, cruising on the freeway at 75 mph will get me 32 mpg easy. This is of course assuming you're not redlining all your shifts.

If you're driving in a city and stopping every block getting less than 25 mpg is expected, see the window sticker.

Chauntalei 07-09-2013 01:40 PM

I normally get about 28mpg on average (Limited 6MT) but I've been driving less since my carpool buddy bought a WRX, so when I DO drive now, I tend to drive a bit more aggressively. My last tank was only about 25.1mpg.

f0rge 07-09-2013 01:48 PM

I drive pretty aggressively most of the time and I live in the city so lots of traffic to get in and out, but also a fair bit of highway on the way to and from the city. Typical speed on the hwy when not stuck in stop and go is 75mph (120km/h).

My car says 7.3L/100kms for the lifetime avg (5500kms/3500 miles), which is about 31-32 US mpg. I have not backed up these numbers.

6MT, lowered on Sportlines with 18x8.5/18x9.5 rims and 225F/245R Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Chee-Hu 07-09-2013 02:06 PM

I have averaged 30-31 weekly and my commute includes 30 miles of stop and go traffic each way on the freeway. The best I have achieved thus far is driving back home from Reno, NV, where I got 35+.

Trashed675 07-09-2013 02:14 PM

I usually AVERAGE 30-33. HWY mileage is usually around 32-35. Highest i've seen for about half a tank was 36(alot of 55-60mph roads).

Since i got Visconti tuned, HWY mileage seems to have bumped up to about 33-36. I've only got about one tank on the tune though, and i've been "testing" it. I'm thinking 38-39 should be doable in the right situation.

I was also extremely pleased with the mileage of this car since i bought it expecting only 30.

mjs 07-09-2013 02:27 PM

I guess I just enjoy driving hard a bit too much. I usually average between about 20 - 22 mpg per tank in mine.

deucethemoose 07-09-2013 02:31 PM

I'm at 31mpg with my AVO turbo kit installed.... and that is mostly city driving.

Nope.

405 in West LA, 6 lanes each side, still stop and go every day.

24 mpg all city on my auto brz limited. I like shifting at redline too much after every turn

zoomzoomers 07-09-2013 02:54 PM

I have a Limited 6AT and I get a wide variance in my mpg's. On strictly hwy's I can easily get 34 + , but as soon as I get off the hwy and onto surface streets that will go way down into the mid 20's and stay there. And that's all driving very conservatively. So go figure...

jeebus 07-09-2013 05:11 PM

My average over the last 18k miles is 29MPG. That includes quite a few AutoX runs and I don't drive like a weeny on the street either.

bestwheelbase 07-09-2013 05:23 PM

There are a LOT of FT86 owners tracking consumption with Fuelly. It's almost an exact number of FRS and BRZ owners. Other sports cars don't have nearly this much data. Very cool!

reeves 07-09-2013 05:33 PM

With my bolt-on mods + tune, I get 32-34 mpg cruising 70-80mph on my trips out of state, depending on how flat the highways are. The mods/tune make it easier to cruise at that speed with less effort.

On my daily work commute (~75% hwy), I get 29-31 mpg, depending on how much traffic I hit.

With E85, I get anywhere from 21 to 25 mpg on my work commute.
Not that great, but it's also $0.75 – $1.10 less than premium gas too. :)

Ouch, I'm low on that list. 22MPG tanks are pretty standard for me with the city and rush hour driving I do combined with my prodigious use of the throttle. The highway can vary from 28-35MPG tanks.

Acree 07-09-2013 05:34 PM

I drive 70% hwy, 30% city on a 45 mile commute every day. I beat the piss out of the car every chance I get and still manage 29 mpg every tank.

ntron1 07-09-2013 07:12 PM

34+ after break in. I have another go fast car so this is just a DD with only occasional hard use of the GO Pedal. Click below....

5th 86 07-09-2013 07:20 PM

Are you guys that are near 30 using 93 octane and up? Best i can get is 91 and i get about 22 mpg... But i prefer to be above 2500 rpm all the time if i can and probably closer to 3000rpm for most city driving

mav1178 07-09-2013 07:24 PM

A few other things to take into consideration:

- gas octane won't make a huge difference between 91 and 93 octane
- what altitude you are at makes a large difference for mileage (http://www.ehow.com/about_6744997_ef...s-mileage.html)
- if your car is modified/lowered, even if the tires are changed out, those all make a difference on mileage. Sticky rubber can reduce your efficiency by as much as 5% by simply adding more rolling resistance.

LRR tires are only good for about 1 - 2 mpg. I suppose if you go the extreme opposite (really grippy tires) you're standing to lose 2 - 3 MPG at most.

mav1178 07-09-2013 07:31 PM

I wasn't referencing low rolling resistance tires... was mainly comparing stock vs aftermarket rubber, which a lot of guys run.

A lot of mileage numbers are not directly comparable if there's no context inserted.

Oh no no no. Please don't feed your car E85 fuel. It's not designed for that food and it will hurt your engine. I'm not just saying this. Please google the harm of E85 on engines.

It's ok, my car loves drinking E85 haha.
If it ever breaks/blows up because of E85, I'll be the first one to post about it... gotta pay to play. :D

v1ru5 07-09-2013 08:08 PM

Drive it like I stole it, 24~mpg in my daily commute. My rx8 did 16 (and ate oil for lunch), so I'm happy.

That website is full of shit, it says lower compression = better gas mileage.

Altitude makes maybe a couple percent difference between sea level and say 5000ft, you only gain back maybe 30% of pumping losses.
