Torn between late 2013 and waiting for 2014 model

I'm looking to get a BRZ Limited in WRB but I'm not sure if I want to get one now or wait for the 2014 with the IMBA discount. I'm not sure if I would like the knee pads or revised badging though..

They quoted me over MSRP for the 2013 model coming in at the end of the month and charged extra for freight. I tried to haggle, didn't go too well. All they decided to do was include a block heater.

What I see is:

2013: lower financing rate and I would have it now for the summer but then I would need snow tires for the winter. (I live in Canada so it's basically a must)

2014: the issues from the 2013 should be fixed, more money and the discount but financing will probably be higher again.

Next closest dealer is 3 hours away from me, so I'm not sure if it's worth the trip there and take a new car on a 3 hour trip fresh off the lot. :/

So torn. What would you guys do? or if you have any tips to get the price down on the 2013 it would be appreciated!

2013 issues have already been resolved. I got mine in Jan and still no issues 5.3k miles in. There are other dealers that you can go to. Do not settle on one dealer that is trying to sell a car over MSRP. No reason they cannot budge on the price. I would drive the 3 hours. Unless the rebadging, radio update, and knee pads are worth the delivery time estimate of October-ish, then yes wait. If you need the car now, drive 3 hours away.

thill 07-07-2013 10:10 AM

You can get a car shipped to you from Colorado for under invoice. Now. See this thread:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33553

I see lots of people from California do this.

AR35 07-07-2013 10:13 AM

do what im doing..wait for the 14's to come out and buy a used 13.... u will save a lotttttt more.

djdnz 07-07-2013 10:52 AM

At this point they either need to give you a GREAT deal on a '13 or just go ahead and put in an order in on a 2014. You're going to hurt in terms of resale if you take the '13 now.

AR35 07-07-2013 12:03 PM

yea. but they arnt giving deals on the 13's... Its either your pockets hurt because you cant wait or you wait and miss the summer driving. There will be another summer, the longer you wait the cheaper it gets

This really doesn't appear to be the case...at least with the serious stuff (thankfully the leaky taillights, random CELs, and poorly fitting-panels have been remedied). That's why I'm just waiting for 2014 at this point, because I can drive the car year round anyway (winter isn't an issue).

Multiple members are still having issues with their DI seals and tunes from the factory, and Toyota and Subaru don't really seem to be saying much about how they plan to address the issue or even recognize it as an issue.

Not to mention a few members are still having significant and unresolved loss of coolant issues, which could be a bigger problem soon as well...

I am from Illinois and did this. Clint is the man and will take care of you. I never did, and was a little skeptical. However, it has been fast, VERY FAIR, and easy.

I would send him an email or PM. I didn't regret it!

Wafflejuice 07-07-2013 03:11 PM

In Canada, I would have to import the car. Which would probably be quite a bit more.

Auzburner 07-07-2013 03:38 PM

I ordered a 13' in WRB 3 weeks ago. It's in the Boston harbor this weekend. Got a few thousand off with the limited model and I pushed them to give me over blue book on my trade. They're dealing down here in Central New York. I'd make the trip!

pheoxs 07-07-2013 03:55 PM

Wait for '14, it'll help with resale value down the road too since its newer unless you can get a great deal on a '13 but at least here they aren't budging from MSRP and interest rates will be the same so there isn't any advantage going '13

enwave 07-07-2013 05:02 PM

If you can get something at or below invoice for a 2013, spring for it. You won't regret it.

I ended up just a couple hundred over invoice a few weeks ago and haven't looked back, especially since the 2014s are so similar. You may sacrifice a few hundred in depreciation since it reads a model year older, but it'll be well worth it to get an extra few months of driving in... I promise!

This is one of the biggest personal reasons I'm happy I'm waiting for the 2014. The 13s will have been out for almost 1.5 yrs once the 14s are out. Not that I plan to sell it once purchased.

I'm personally waiting, to get as much $ saved up to pay it off much sooner. Each buyer has his or her own reason for getting either a 13' or 14'. Just make sure at the end of the day you're happy with your decision.

m.wood0213 07-07-2013 08:11 PM

chances are you'll have to order a WRB BRZ

enwave 07-08-2013 01:36 AM

Yep. I compromised by giving up WRB for SSM in order to get my 2013. Might be tough to find a WRB without ordering.

I searched the entire North East for a WRB Limited MT. Found 1 in Southern Pennsylvania but they were asking above MSRP. Ridiculous. I ordered 4 weeks ago, and it's coming in late this week from Boston. There were a few WRB Premiums and AT's - nothing I was interested in.

Ordering may not be a horrible bet. Plus, I got the dealer to agree that if I was pushed to a 2014, they'd honor the same price agreed on for the 2013.

Good luck!

There's a few coming in to Canada at the end of the month according to the dealer here but they're quoting me above MSRP with extra freight charges, seems kind of pushy as well.
I heard that this dealer has terrible service, didn't think it would that bad until I had to wait almost 40 minutes for someone to talk to... I'm trying not to deal with them.

I did find a dealer that would give me a deal.. but they only have a black one with ~2000kms on it, said they'll try to get a WRB one for me. I'm hoping for invoice or under for pricing at this point.. we'll see what happens.

But if they can't get one in WRB for a good price then I might wait for the 2014.

Those who had the car through the winter, did you have any issues with winter driving?
Our last winter had temperatures around -40 in January with about a few feet of snow. Friend traded in his RWD car after that winter..

wbsrazzle 07-09-2013 10:39 PM

Wait for the 2014, to at least see what changes are being made. If not many, buy a 2013..

86GT 07-11-2013 12:26 AM

I had pre-ordered a Series 10 but upon seeing the color in person, I didn't like it. I went ahead and picked up a 2013 WRB BRZ. I got information from all dealerships that gave me quotes that the changes to the 2014 MY are very minor. Many of these dealerships didn't even have the color to sell so they werent trying to rope me in for a 2013. Finally picked up a MT over the weekend from NH for a great price.

That's what I'm hoping for as well but the dealers here won't budge on the pricing on the 2013s.

I thought about the Scion Series 10 but it's too expensive here in Canada. Taxes in and everything else brings it to about $40k. I much rather get a BRZ.

Yea but you realize every beats the BRZ/FRS all the time and drive them hard finding one in good condition under 50k will be a good idea, although it will probably be fine.

tobin 07-11-2013 09:54 AM

I picked up a 2013 BRZ limited one week ago (July 3) and couldn't be happier. My '00 Legacy GT was totaled after a shuttle bus ran a stop sign and took out the front end. So, I needed a car immediately. My dealer took great care of me, tracked down the exact car I wanted (Limited, 6 speed, light silver) which was brand new and sitting on another dealer's lot about 140 miles away. They delivered the car and I gave me a great price (under invoice, almost 2k under MSRP).

I was really concerned about the new 2014 coming out right after I bought the car, but the fact that they are not even being delivered until Oct/Nov (needed one right away) made me go for the 2013. Plus, the 2014 would likely be at or above MSRP. Finally, I did not want the (rumored) steering wheel buttons.

WHAT?!?! theres a rumored that there will be steering wheel buttons on the 2014? if this rumor is true it makes it easier waiting for the 2014

I don't believe this is true. The only info we have seen from Subaru has been that the 2014 will have knee pads and Aha radio app standard.

Yea, but it will prob. still be in warranty. Also if there are any new 13's left we can pick them up for a lot less then right now.

Well in my area they have been close to the same price the entire year $25,417-$26000 the only difference is the APR % which dropped by 1%, maybe in one more month if they still have them on the lot they will drop $1000-$2000 but I have to wait. At least for when they start taking orders for 2014

Why the hell do you need steering wheel controls? The entire point of the car is driver feel that would detract from it.

Many people are used to having buttons on the steering wheel, and many people don't like the touchscreen head unit. Honestly, while I like the lack of buttons from a simplicity standpoint, I would take a couple at this point so I did not have to try and fiddle with the touchscreen when driving. And I am not talking about 20 buttons like some cars have. Like 4.

I guess that would be ok if it were non-intrusive buttons just volume + - a voice button etc.
Also anyone know what they are talking about when they say "Revised badging" and where is the head unit sourced from?

kALMIGHTY 07-11-2013 03:49 PM

I was supposed to have my 2013 that I ordered last week on the 22nd of this month, but my dealership "forgot" to get the Premium Pioneer audio upgrade installed at port, and the car is already on its way which means I either take the car with a basic head unit that I don't want, or wait for another 2013 to come the way I want which will take another few months. Because of my dealership's mistake, I have no choice but to wait another few months and I'll be damned if I get a 2013 at MSRP that late when the 2014's are coming around the same time, so looks like 2014 for me.
Take the 2013 if you can, you'll like it more, and 5 or 10 years from now, it'll be worth more than the 2014 for being an "original" model year and a collector's car someday.

Because the touch screen and UI of the head unit SUCKS.

I can get one for $1000 under MSRP, but not sure if that's worth it.

IMBA discount would give more, but I would have to get a 2014 model... Still waiting to see if the knee pads and "revised badging" are the only features.

Keep them on there toes keep badgering them the pressure of those BRZ's not selling will get to them eventually and they will fold maybe get 1k off the price.

Haven't driven the FRS in Canadian winter yet, but I've been driving a Rwd IS300 for 6 winters. If you drive appropriately and smart there is no problem. Get a good pair of snow tires is key. Another trick is to start in 2nd to avoid excessive slipping of tires.
