Front License Plate

Did anyone get the license plate installed in the front and then end up taking it off?? I want to take mine off but I don't know how it would look with the drill holes. And if you have no license plate in the front, do the cops give you a lot of hassle for it?? I see a lot of cars without their front one and I wonder if those people get tickets often. Anyone have any experience with either one of these things??

Hassle... possibly, taking your own chances. I personally like the offset one.

take it off and see how those drill holes look. you can easily put it back on. Mine were pretty aweful because the bumper material got pulled outwards

Thank god for living in a place where front license plates aren't required at all.

Life is good if all you have to worry about is where to mount your front plate. I took mine off, but then got pulled over for doing 300 in a 35. I got a pass from the cop once I told her about not having a plate in the front. She understood how not having that thing up front could result in a car being totally uncontrollable. She was cool, and realized that my car would totally suck if it had to have a plate up front. She made me show her my penis. She laughed and let me go with a warning.

I had a plate relocation kit (grimmspeed) and got hassled by local police about it. He then told me he smelled alcohol on my breath (no drinks that night). Just because you have a front plate with relocation kit doesn't mean you wont get hassled, as was the case with me. Apparently it's illegal if off center. And yes I was very polite with him the entire time.

where do you live? my county hit me with a $210 ticket for no front plate...

IntotheOcean 07-07-2013 09:55 AM

Personally I would have it taken off, fixed and than relocate it with either using the tow hook, drilling again but this time lower and not on the actual paint of the car, Or plastic tie it to the grill...I plan on doing the last option in the future. I'm pretty confident it'll come out okay...But if you really don't want it look up your state laws, How much the fine is and whether its a fix it ticket. On long island between the ticket and surcharge it comes out to around 200$ plus its not a fix it.

Think of it this way-Ticket money or Mod money :)

I took mine off and no problems

If i ever get pulled over, i will tell them that i just got my car back from the dealer due to front bumper replacement lol

Toggle bolts with washers using the plate kit that came with the car. No drilling on car. Had to drill screw holes on plate in order to clear the lip. Attachment 43222

Take the plate off. You don't need the money you'll be shelling out for the tickets anyway.

Ask yourself this, do you want to be singled out by a cop looking to meet his quota for the month?

It really depends on the State you're in. In Texas there is no fine attached to a missing front plate so it appears that about 90% of the 86s I see have opted to not mess with it. Most other States though will give you a fixit ticket at least if not a heavy fine to boot.

For me personally, I don't like the idea of giving the cops any reasons. Maybe I was stretching the speed limit a bit and the guy wasn't going to bother with me, but add in a missing front tag and he decides, "Oh ok, this guy's thinks he's too good for the rules."

I have personalized tags and purposely got all black ones with white lettering so it blends fairly well into the front grill area.

That is news to me about TX. I got pulled over early this year for not having a front license plate but once the officer got up close and saw the manufacturer rear plate he went on his way.

idk check your laws, they are fucking thieves out here.

FR-S Matt 07-07-2013 07:59 PM

The law in Texas is going away in September anyway from what I read.... Take that crap off. I've had mine off since 2009 on two different cars and I've never been pulled over once.

Calavera 07-07-2013 08:04 PM

I think the old school new TX plate looks good in our cars, specially whiteout. Now if it was the old space shuttle and cowboy from past then I would risk it without a front plate!

Yeah, the way it's written - they can pull you over and write you a ticket, but there's no fine or anything else associated with it. It's mostly just a nuisance for everybody.

I read it was up for a vote while they were in session, but hadn't heard whether it passed... I could probably find that somewhere on the intertubes...

Yeah - when I read about them potentially getting rid of the front plates all together I was a little bummed, since the standard tag did look good on the back of my Whiteout.

Chillyairplane 07-07-2013 11:48 PM

I got pulled over on my way to work a few weeks ago for speeding... was around 7 am, perfectly bright outside, and he lasered me from the FRONT of my car, and didn't mention anything about not having a front license plate.

Also have illegal tint. :happy0180:

Miniata 07-08-2013 12:31 AM

Front plates are required here. I've never had one on my BRZ, and three of our other cars don't have front plates either. Never been pulled over or hassled for it. If I do get pulled over on occasion, I'm willing to pay the fine.

If I was in my 20's (profiling), lived in the city, my BRZ was my daily driver, and I put a lot of miles on it, I would find a way to mount the front plate without drilling (or using an offset plate mount), but I live in the country, am past the age where I get pulled over all the time by the cops, and don't daily drive my BRZ, so it is staying off.

On my Mini Cooper, the bumper was drilled by the dealer before I could tell them no, so I filled the the holes with black silicone (the car is black) and smoothed it over, and it is difficult to tell it was ever drilled until you get very close. On another color of car, I would do the same and use touch-up paint to try and blend it in.
