Stuck on color choice.. Need help
After reading the disappointing up-coming additions to the 2014 BRZ, I decided to buy a 2013. But before I go ahead and put any money down, I need to figure out what color I want. I've narrowed it down to the black and white. I keep on going back and forth between these two colors. :mad0259:
The black, hides the few lines the car has and gets dirty quickly, but it looks amazing when washed and waxed. The white does a better job of accenting the lines and curves. It also requires less maintenance compared to black, but it is not as striking. What do you guys think? White or black? Are there any reasons to chose one over the other besides which is easier to clean? Such as paint issues, or anything else I may not have considered? |
I went with rally blue just because the frs doesn't come in that color. IMO white just doesn't look good on the brz, weird for me cause I didn't like a rally blue sti but I had a aspen white 05.
|
I originally ordered WRB, but changed to black. While I was waiting, a customer dropped out on a WRB and the dealer offered it to me, but I passed.
IMO the 'mustache' looks silly, so the black makes the car look more complete. I also dig the blue metallic/mica particles. I liked it so much I traded after five months for a second, also black. I *might* have bought orange, if it was available on Subaru however. FYI, if you ever have bodywork done - not all Subaru CBS are the same. The cars made in Indiana (Legacy, Tribeca, etc.) have a different blend - the metallic lacks the blue, it's just silvery like most other metallic blacks. The Japanese-built cars (Impreza, BRZ) have the blue particles. |
You're going to get a lot of subjective replies regarding this topic.
But I'll break down my experience for you based on my previous ownership of a black RSX and now a white BRZ. Black definitely has that luster when clean, that the white just does not have. But it dirties much more quickly, so often times, that luster is relatively short-lived. One thing about black is that you need to keep the tires clean as well, else it does not look right on a clean, black paint. With white, the threshold of visual acceptability is higher, since you have no real other good-looking black surface to compare against. Additionally, not only do you need to keep the car clean to look good, but you also need to have proper washing, drying, and detailing technique to maintain paint quality and minimize swirls and marring since these are very visible on black. I am also finding that rock chips are much less apparent on white than it is on black. Black also gets much hotter than white. I am not sure of the average weather in MA, but you may want to keep this in mind if you do not enjoy getting into a hot car. I have heard paint-matching with white is more difficult, but I have no first-hand experience with it to confirm. The answer is probably one of those "it depends." Anyway, if you live in areas where you think you will have to repaint a panel, or a portion of it, in the future, this is a good point to keep in mind. As you know, the decision is really up to you and you can't go wrong with any color on this beautiful car. But, it is best to weigh these pros and cons of each color for yourself. As for me, I'm pretty sold on white! |

I drove a white car for 13 years, so I knew for sure I was going to get something else.
WRB was my 1st pick, and Black was 2nd. I later dropped Black because, 1. car wash - i don't feel like i will have the time/money to wash it that often 2. heat - living in So. Cal, anything can help. 3. wasn't available when I bought my BRZ I really like WRB because it's unique. It really stands out and I have no problem with that. |
To answer the question you should also tell us your favorite color, and type of cereal you eat.
This way, we can publicly scrutinize your choices of tie colors and fabric choice, and provide you the best answer to see how it all matches to your car color... Seriously, just buy the color you like. And white requires more work, just an FYI. Source: I own one. -alex Edit: I wanted either WRB, or SWP. I ended up going with white because it was in stock and I didn't have to wait till Aug/Sep to get a car. |
I've owned two white and five black cars. Both are a lot of work, I wouldn't say that one is any less work than the other.
I will say, however, that the small size of this car, plus a couple applications of Rejex, results in a wash-and-dry time that's on the order of fifteen minutes. The RIM on the BRZ is black, so if you get stone chips on the front fascia, they'll stick out with white colors. OTOH, the metal primer is light (grey or whitish, I can't tell), so chips on the hood/rockers will tell more with dark colors. |
Yes, lots of subjective answers is what you will get.
Here's mine. Lots and lots of FRS seem to be white. If you are going BRZ you're going to be a bit different but if you go white it'll just blend in with all the white FRSs. If I was going BRZ I'd go the WRB or black as they seem less common. Of course I love my dark grey but doesn't seem very "Subaruey" to me, more of a Toyota/Scion colour. I know this is an opinion from the other side of the world but we all have opinions on the Internet! |
I just got WRB yesterday, love the color, it was my first choice. I lucked out and found a premium that wasn't marked up.
If I didn't get a WRB BRZ I would've just gotten a Whiteout FR-S or Black. |

But I do have a question for all you SWP owners. How do the paint chips look on the paint? Are they more noticeable on black or white? |
See my comment about primer. You need to be on top of paint chips, though - touch them up ASAP, on the hood; if corrosion starts in on the aluminum, you'll be in a world of hurt (see Ford Expedition liftgates/F-150 hoods and tailgates).

But anyway, I'd say black. Here's why: if you plan on getting anything paint protections things like clear bra (which I recommend), it's going to be far less noticeable on the black. Plus, any discolouration of the clear bra will be obvious on the white as soon as it starts to happen. Also, the plastic bumpers and the metal on the white have a very slightly colour difference because of the pearl paint being really hard to match since they're not painted together, but separately in different locations and then put together. If you have major OCD like me, the colour differences, especially to colourblind people like who can notice differences in shades much easier than normal people, will be a big bother and it'll make you wish you chose the black. Other than the fact that black gets dirty easier, there's really no other downside to the colour if your mind is set up on either black or white. Plus, it getting dirty faster will only make you take care of your car more, which isn't a bad thing at all. Good luck. |

Don't look at this car from an investment or "keeping it as clean as possible" perspective. Cars are poor "investments" and the constant need to keep it spotless will just drive you mad in the long run. I washed the car after driving it home from CO (~1100 miles), waxed it a week after, noticed some minor chips in the bumper, and you know what I thought? "Cool, this car is fun to drive!" My '05 Camry's roof is peeling clear coat, and it's been hit by so many shopping carts in Chinese plazas I can't even begin to count where the first one started and the last one ended. But in the end, it's a car... For you truly paranoid ones: feel free to clear bra or use 3M Paint Defender on the entire car if you want to protect every inch of the car. But honestly, some colors (darker) will just be harder to maintain, some colors (lighter) will be harder to keep clean, there's no right or wrong answer here. I always frown upon threads that ask "what color wheels go best with this color car", and this is sort of the same.... WE are not YOU. YOU should go with a color that YOU like... and asking us for how easy/hard it is to maintain the car is also assuming YOU and US maintain the car in the exact same manner. I can't even tell you how many people (perhaps myself included) are not qualified to be a professional detailer, by virtue of poor washing/waxing technique, or have no understanding of how paint works on metal. -alex |
Black is a b*tch to keep clean..... that being said, when it is? *Swoon*
If you are looking for a lower maintenance color, I'd say white. I wanted white at first, then I saw the black. Oh well. I'm out there with spot detailer almost every day and a car cover at night/while raining. (I don't have a garage) I have seen the blue and it looks sharp. I guess it really comes down to what you can live with for the 5, 10, forever years you plan on owning it. At least that's what I think. |
I owned two black cars and never again... So I vote white...
|
WHITE
|
Black.
Every girl I know drives either white or silver cars, making it an easy decision for me. I knew that if I bought black the only thing I'd worry about is it being dirty (which honestly doesn't bother me). With white I knew I'd regret not buying black. My advice is to buy the color you know you'll regret less. Either that or buy black regardless and vinyl wrap it later in whatever color you want. |
I've seem both in the real world (not dealerships cause lets be honest...it looks different on the streets). I have to go with white. Just seems to have...cleaner lines...I dunno it's 1 am right now.
|
I vote for black, in addition to what everyone else had already said, black makes the car look more VIP.
White is great too, but it is not a true white. To me, the white looks more like a mixture of white and silver which was what shunned me away from it in the first place. |
I have one and sometime depending on the light i think i bought a beige car, but i have seen the silver in it, and it looks best at dawn or dusk to me . You can see the pearl and if its clean and carnuba waxed it glows at those times which is fn awesome.
|
Black:
- cannot keep clean - shows all the swirls - tiny specks of water dry on the surface and make white water spots easily visible against the black paint - gets hot on summer days - pollen coats the car and turns it a light yellow - road salt during winter (if you have winter) streaks the side of the car white Go with white, or silver. There are more fun things to do than to obsessively detail your car every time there is a little rain. |
I would get what YOU want...
|
Go with the dark grey! it looks AMAZING in person and it wont get AS dirty fast. I like the wire blue and the dark grey. White just doesnt stand out enough and black is hot and gets dirty.
|
See if you can get Red. ( uber rare). Or you can never go wrong with wrb
|
Consider Sterling Silver Metallic. It is metal, black AND white. Then peer into the future in two years and ask yourself "Will I still like it". Silver or not.

This is how you choose...
Whatever you think looks best. But some things to consider, Blue with definitely stand out more (might be good or bad depends on what you want). Black IMO looks the best, but i am making a career of washing my black brz haha. Best of luck choosing, for me it was easy because I like black the most. |
I had 2 WRB WRXs before the BRZ. The 2011 WRX, I was really between the WRB and the DGM but I ended up caving and getting the WRB.
This time around I was between the same two. However, I found a limited DGM first so I took the plunge. Really looking forward to it! |
I have a CBS BRZ now and love it. People are correct it's a bit more work but as small as the car is, not a big deal. This is my second BRZ, the first was SWP, hit two deer, repairs were fine but the paint matching was a nightmare and after four times back for paint matching the CBS came in and I took it.
|
Huh! "Whatever you think looks best:...but.........

Just some input! |
Id get white, if it actually came in white. SWP is more beige than white.
|
Everybody is forgetting silver. Before I got my car, I used to HATE silver, and I mean HATE it. But silver looks great on these cars since it shows off the body lines very well. It's a nice classy color and it's easy to maintain.
|
WRB FTW!!!!!! But if your stuck on B or W Id go white because black is hard to keep nice.

You won't be disappointed in almost any of the colors offered. I was originally dying for WRB, but saw and drove the SSM and compromised my values for it. I haven't looked back, and I'm very happy with my decision.
This car is surprisingly beautiful in silver. A car that is this beautiful works in just about any color. The silver helps me blend in a little in the case that I'm pushing the speed limit... which I NEVER do of course... And it gives me a lot of flexibility with wheel colors/engine decoration. But ultimately, get whatever you think you'll like in five to ten years, because you'll probably love the car enough to keep it that long. |
