BRZ with Rear Underskirt Picture?

If anyone has a pic of BRZ with the rear underskirt, please share... wondering if I should add to the accesory. Thanks a lot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it should be similar to the FR-S!?! If so, here are some.

the picture above (jdm brochure) has an underskirt, the other 2 pictures are obviously from someone who didn't understand we were looking for a picture of the OPTIONAL underskirt that the US dealers don't yet have info on.

Guess I just learned something new. :thanks:

My dealer had info on it. I ordered one and a few other people I know of have ordered it. Its going to be a port installed option.

kash 03-07-2012 11:15 PM

Thx everyone!!

So in JP, they call it the rear under diffuser? When I placed my pre-order, the dealer asked me if I wanted it. I wasn't sure what it would look like so I said no. If that rear diffuser really is the underskirt, I have second thoughts now....

Where have you seen it in the States? Do you have a pic or link to share?

Draco-REX 03-08-2012 08:43 AM

I'm holding off on the under spoiler until the front lip is available. I think it'll look odd to have it on the rear but nothing similar on the front.

Mitchs_86 03-08-2012 11:18 AM

look closely at the rear end!!!

SkullWorks 03-08-2012 12:37 PM

My dealer had no pricing on the first preorder day so I went with no a ZERO options Limited, I was tempted at the underskirt but I know they will be available through the parts catalog and I'll pick it up if I decide i need it.

Yep.. that's the underskirt.. or rear under-diffuser.

I was hoping it would be a little more pronounced.. but still, it looks really sharp.

Still, that could be a pre-production model as well.

Should be intereting to see what the msrp is on that.. if it's under $150 I'd probably go for it as it would be nice to have it factory installed.. If more, I'll wait and buy aftermarket. Since it doesn't need to be painted and attaches underneath and out of sight, there will be many aftermarket alternatives that are cheap and easy to install.

ayau 03-08-2012 01:12 PM

looks like that red BRZ in the video also has the optional chrome gas cover and side accents.

blueBRZ 03-08-2012 02:06 PM

I have to say...I actually love the chrome fender trim accents...and usually, I'm anti-chrome. Kinda gives a more finished look to the faux-vent area.

The under spoiler also looks good, although it almost makes the US-spec exhaust tips look that much smaller.

hanabie 03-08-2012 02:22 PM

I want the side fin blade! the underskirt looks odd if you have tiny exhaust tips lol

Phaedrus29 03-08-2012 02:37 PM

Is this underspoiler actually functional?

thermobox 03-08-2012 03:44 PM

If it's anything like the R205 underspoiler, I would assume it's functional.

So the chrome accent thing we see right next to the side mirros is the Chrome Fender Trim? I like!

Yeah...that's my assumption too. I ordered it (price unknown) so we'll see what shows up at the dealer. Fingers crossed!

After seeing the BRZ underbody in person, I would not assume it's functional at all. There's no aero-handling rearwards of the front axle. There's big airflow disruptions well before any laminar flow may tumble around the bumper; the rear diff, muffler, all the air gaps, and finally the bumper cover. The accessory under-spoiler would have to essentially be an entire rear-underbody panel to be at all functional for creating downforce.

From that accessory catalog picture, it looks like nothing more than a narrow strip of body-colored plastic that decorates the bottom of the bumper cover. If you like how it looks, then go for it. Until proven otherwise, assume it's aesthetic-only.

serialk11r 03-08-2012 05:20 PM

Any of the numerous underbody pictures show a completely exposed rear suspension, but I don't think that's the main thing. The muffler body and fake diffuser will already sort of act as pressure recovery/wake filling, and tacking on a metal piece underneath it with the exact same shape that doesn't extend past the rear bumper has zero net effect. Since they're essentially using the muffler as bodywork, to make a noticable change in the aero of the car you'd have to get rid of it and replace with something more compact, put some plastic covers on the suspension components, and work from there.

IIRC the catalog said the "rear under spoiler" cost something like 700 dollars O_O

did you see the underbody airflow cover that's found on the jdm aero package on the USDM version of the BRZ?

Those don't do much, the gas tank is more or less flat already, but the suspension arms are exposed, and those will be a problem as I said.

Ryephile 03-08-2012 05:49 PM

I don't recall seeing any underbody cladding like that. There was just an under-front-bumper plate and a lower engine pan. The aero aft of that is not developed whatsoever.

--->serial: The muffler is a horrible aero shape and is likely not positively contributing to any "pressure recovery". The fake diffuser is just a normal bumper cover that has molded-in black color where the uninformed assume a diffuser would be. There's no good aero-handling whatsoever to that rear underbody, muffler, bumper cover, or anything.

Edit: As seen in the Moto IQ pictures, no underbody cladding, and ill-shaped "aero":

serialk11r 03-08-2012 06:10 PM

Well it does *something* as the muffler is angled slightly upward and while there's a gap between it and the "diffuser" piece, the angle is correct and the suspension components and stuff all sit above the bottom of the muffler. So it has some kind of effect, it's just very small due to the messy underbody. Putting a smooth plastic board over the whole thing would eliminate the gaps and make it work a bit better. Ideally, the underbody should start sloping up much earlier...it looks to me like the only thing that's really in the way is the differential. So I think it should be possible to start an upward sloping plastic piece at the gas tank ahead of the rear axle, with a protruding "tunnel" for the differential. The muffler should be switched to a smaller one to get it out of the way, the exhaust pipe should be routed out of the airflow, and then the fake diffuser could use some trimming to get it to sit higher for more downforce, or the overall height increase could be kept the same for low drag.

I believe those covers are options, as the JDM spec sheet did talk about a gas tank cover or something. Just their way of ripping us off I guess. Coroplast board tacked onto the bottom should do the job. I guess this is another place where you can tell they were trying to go cheap, they do a better job than this on some Camry model or something.

Ryephile 03-08-2012 06:24 PM

Where you begin your venturi tunnel depends where you want your focal point of downforce to be. This is one way aerodynamicists tune front-to-rear aero balance.

I know what you're trying to say with the muffler angle, however it's simply not positioned as effectively as it may look in the pictures. The airspace in front of the muffler is a big trans/exhaust tunnel followed by a big rear differential. There's not going to be much useful laminar flow, even if the muffler was a helpful aerodynamic shape. You can't just stuff a "diffuser" in the back of a hugely turbulent region and expect magic to happen.

Like you said, flat paneling with virtually no regard to "diffusing" would be a big improvement to the big gaps and exposed suspension it has at the moment.

serialk11r 03-08-2012 06:28 PM

Yea sorry I tend to lump everything together sometimes. For the lowest drag, starting the slope earlier is better, but balancing downforce depends yea. But with regards to diffuser angle, it's lower if you want to cut drag, because most cars don't have much air going through the underbody so if you increase the angle you end up with extra air coming through the sides which would increase drag somewhere else and/or flow separation.

switchlanez 03-08-2012 06:29 PM

^^^^Just want to point out those motoiq underbody pics aren't necessarily what the production version will look like. We'd need to reference pics of cars built on or after 3/7/2012 because that was when production officialy started.

That was my guess too. I'm going to add it to my accessory list. HOpefully it's not the chrome wheel trim. It'd be ugly on this car.

Ryephile 03-08-2012 10:17 PM

Well here are two underbody pics I had from Tuesday:

RYE_3979.jpg by Ryephile, on Flickr

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7177/6...a7dfa0ea_b.jpg
RYE_3983.jpg by Ryephile, on Flickr

You can see the engine underbelly pan, but there's nothing covering the underside of the unibody floor pan in the passenger compartment. There appears to be something partially covering the trans/exhaust tunnel, but not all of it, and I don't have another view that gives a definitive look. It's certainly not like the JDM underbody paneling. It's still possible this "pre-release tour" car isn't production, though I'd bet that it is.

serialk11r 03-08-2012 10:38 PM

Just checked the options chart, it appears to be optional for all trims on the JDM BRZ at least...I'm guessing that means it'll be a ripoff dealer option that runs several hundred dollars, just like the "diffuser".

switchlanez 03-08-2012 11:09 PM

^^Ryephile, if that pic was from Tuesday I doubt it was built the same day (to qualify as a production version). :)

But as serialkiller said, I don't think it'll be standard.

^I think that's a JDM TRD piece. There was an auto show (I believe Tokyo Auto Salon) where the white TRD 86 was on display with a mirror under the body... another picture of this should be in a thread on here somewhere (probably a TAS thread).

Nice! Thanks for the info. I wonder if it's functional.
