Fog Lights Always On

My fog lights are always on -- except when I turn the rest of my lights on. Driving around day or night, with my lights set to off or auto, my fog lights are shining bright. Is this working as intended? Am I missing something?

I apologize if this has already been addressed, but I could not turn anything up in search.

Look at the second dial switch on the stalk..(just inside where you turn lights on/off) that switch controls the fog lights

Colombo 07-02-2013 12:07 AM

There is a separate control on the stalk for the fog lights. Make sure that's not on.

aranami 07-02-2013 12:20 AM

Right, that's set to off. o = off, right?

Correct. If they're still on then you have a problem. Try the stealership.

aranami 07-02-2013 12:28 AM

Will do, thanks!

But what is the point of being able to set the switch to off if it doesn't turn the lights off?

they help lower your insurance by staying on. and the switch only works for when you have your headlights on.

Aha! Thank you much!

Admiral Ballsy 07-02-2013 04:26 PM

Those are not fog lights, they're the DRLs.

They do nothing for insurance, however. They just annoy oncoming traffic.

Much like fog lights, now that I think about it.

joop1987 07-02-2013 04:29 PM

Another option is buy techstream for $25 and turn it off DRL yourself.

infinite012 07-02-2013 04:30 PM

The lights you're talking about, are they rectangular or round?

If rectangular, they are your LED daytime running lights. This is normally on with the headlights off.

If round, they are you halogen fog lights. This is not normally on with the headlights off.

aranami 07-02-2013 06:55 PM

They're the round ones... so they are fog, and they aren't supposed to be running when I have them set to off?

Correct, the round ones in the corner of the fenders, down at the very bottom are the fogs. The stalk setting should look like this, if they are switched off (apologies for low lighting, pic taken in a parking garage at work):

Yup, that's how my stalk settings look. They only come on when I'm moving. I took it by the dealership and they claim it's functioning as intended. They told me they aren't actually fog lights, they're dtrl's like others have pointed out to me. I can never tell how much truth I'm hearing at the dealership, though.

Send a picture so we can end the confusion. I'm guessing they are the DRLs

If it's the vertical bar of LED's, right above the round light, those are the DRL's.

http://www.cars101.com/subaru/brz/brz13-foglight1.jpg

The bar along the top are the DRL's, the round light is the fog light

The TOP bar should come on when you are moving, that's correct. The BOTTOM light should not, and if it is, and the stalk is turned off, something is busted.

Horizontal, not vertical.

But anyways, I still can't really see why this is a thread.

Wow, 90% of the tread posters assume that OP is a stupid hobo. Must be annoying.

DRLs go off at night, people.

Sounds like a genuine problem. I think your Fog light relay is stuck in ON position. There's no easy way to access it, so take it to the dealer.

aranami 07-03-2013 10:06 AM

Well, as much as I'd like to say they were wrong to assume I'm a stupid hobo, they're not. It's the horizontal bar, I just couldn't tell correctly when seeing it through the reflections of other folks cars. You're right though, generally people should not treat others like they're idiots -- I just happen to be a genuine idiot.

Still, my DLRs are staying on at night so I'm going to take that in to get it looked at.

Thanks for the assistance, folks!

Not if the headlights are off.

The DRL stay on if your parking lights are on but not your headlights. (I believe.). I'm not actually sure now at night... I've read you can't have your headlights, fog lights, and DRL on at the same time. You can run your parking lights ("halo's") and DRL at the same time.

You never even looked at the lights?

Nope, the one time I tried, I put it in neutral, pulled the e brake, stepped out and nothing was on.

DRLs turn off when the parking brake is applied.

sounds like a wiring issue. Generally, the foglight relay is switched on by the headlights, meaning that they will not work without the headlights. I'm actually going to wire my fogs to function independently.

OEM fogs have their own switch, but like you said the relay is tripped by the head lights

I suggest you do some research on the $30,000 car that you own and figure out how stuff like this works...

The DRLs are only on when your headlights are OFF and the parking brake is disengaged. Yes, it is possible to turn your "halos" on and have the DRLs on. You turn your headlight switch to the 3rd option (1-off, 2-auto, 3-awesomelookingsetting, 4-on).

I knew all of this before I ever even drove my BRZ.
