What Octane for the FR-S?

I always use 93 I had never had issue I've done 93 for a whole year using Shell Nitrogen Gas and BP Gas. Never downgraded. What about you guys?

Barbarian 06-29-2013 11:10 PM

93 Shell mostly, sometimes I go with ethanol free

whaap 06-30-2013 12:09 AM

If there's 93 in my area I don't know where it is. I've used 91 for over 10,000 miles with no problems.

UnOvertime 06-30-2013 12:24 AM

93 octane most of the time down here in FL. Used 91 octane on my trip up to Arkansas a few times and never saw any issues. Ethanol free gas is used when I want the fuel pump chirps to go away for a tank or so.

roddy 06-30-2013 09:52 AM

In my area, one brand has a 94 octane E10 blend. Everyone else is 91 max. In the heat of summer, the car runs noticeably better on the 94.

NIKDENG 06-30-2013 10:16 AM

100 RON in this side of the woods.

reeves 06-30-2013 05:15 PM

104 octane corn juice :)

waterbison777 06-30-2013 05:35 PM

91 octane :(

Ingen 06-30-2013 09:37 PM

93 Sunoco mostly, but often other 93s. Downgrade savings don't justify the loss of power, use the best you can get.

914_WHITE_FRS 06-30-2013 11:34 PM

I just want the engine to last me a long time for giving it the high octane :)

Wish we had something other than 91 Octane here in Nova Scotia.

Not sure what you think you might be inferring...E85 is commonly understood to be 109 octane

m.wood0213 07-03-2013 05:37 PM

93 best available although ive been thinking of going to motorsports ranch's VP pump that has 100 and 109 unleaded just for grins.

topazsparrow 07-03-2013 05:39 PM

94 Chevron. Smells so good :)

I've read avoiding gas with ethanol will help avoid the chirps. I'm at 1500km and chirp free so far.

Muaddib 07-03-2013 07:30 PM

94 Chevron but at a cost of over $6 per gallon.

Usually 91 octane no ethanol. I try to get 93 whenever i can (tolled interstates or when i go down to nj or nyc)

l0aded 07-03-2013 08:07 PM

Just wondering but do you guys still get the chirp with 93 octane+ gas? Or is it an ethanol content thing?

- poor 91 octane guy

It's not a direct correlation. Avoiding E10 helped some, not others.

E85 should not be used in place of gasoline or E10 unless the car is specifically designed for "flex fuel" or has been tuned for E85. It's stoichiometric ratio is different and needs to run richer. Simply dumping it into a car that's not designed to use it will cause it to run lean.

The whole octane thing is pretty well covered as to "why" we need high octane for the FA20 engine. Those at low altitude should stick with 93 (RON+MON/2) minimum, higher altitude can use 91 with no danger due to lower atmospheric pressure. In short, the high octane simply makes it more stable and resistant to preignition (a.k.a. ping, detonation, knock, etc). This, in turn, allows the ECU to advance timing as far as it's programming allows, and allows tuners and builders to be more aggressive.

For me, yes. Others have said differently, but in my particular case, The 94 octane is an E10 blend and chirps like crazy. In my area, Shell's premium (91 Octane) has no Ethanol and I get no chirps when using it. As much as I HATE the crickets, I usually run the 94 in the summer as the car feels better when using it. In the colder months it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Did you ever have Sunoco stations in NS? Here in Ontario, all of the Sunoco stations were re-branded as Petro Canada or Husky a couple of years ago. Most of the ones that had 94 and were changed to PC kept the 94.

BlackMagicSir 07-04-2013 02:47 AM

100 Octane where I'm from. On a related note, does anybody know the pros/cons between a 100 Octane fuel and an E85? I googled it but there wasn't a helpful result in the first page.

Haven't noticed it, although I usually get gas at Esso. I'll have to keep an eye outfor Petros and have a look.

I need those 3x Esso points though on Supreme :D

Nothing to infer.. the pump is labeled 104 here.

That is interesting.

Steve201brz 07-08-2013 08:05 PM

Since day 1 I've been using 93 and never had any problems n it runs great. One time on a long drive I made a pit stop for gas and a drink, it was a long drive n my buddy was going to fill up n I forgot to tell him 93... So I got a tank of 87 and I definitely felt a difference on the those last 200 miles. Might be a decent difference in octane but now I definitely get 93 or higher if I can find it. I feel guilty giving it lower lol

PStaff716 07-08-2013 10:55 PM

93 octane from Sunoco..it's just so damn close to my house. Anyone know if that's an inferior company to purchase gas from? Never really thought too hard about it..

Same, It's about 1.53 / L right now for me.

Slash 07-09-2013 10:34 AM

My local sonoco 93 used to make my old ms3 knock like crazy.

Considering I just filled up my car today and payed 1.53 a liter. I'm quite sure It costs me 1.53 a liter.

Not sure what you're paying, but I also didn't make a guess.

Muaddib 07-13-2013 08:47 PM

It is 1.63 here.

JSC 07-13-2013 09:29 PM

I normally run 92 octane ethanol free, but if I'm not near an E0 station I use 91 octane Chevron.

Not only have you proved it by just being observant, but it is proven by dynos that the ECU for the FA20 stock is heavily effected by temperature changes.
