Did you weld your headers on or bolted them on?

I just ordered my fa20club catted headers and am just curious.

J MaM 86 06-26-2013 12:41 AM

Bolt on the welded headers?

CBR600RR 06-26-2013 12:44 AM

??????????

lbroskee 06-26-2013 12:48 AM

as in weld them to ur block? that seems like a terrible idea

LeeMaster 06-26-2013 12:58 AM

I dont feel comfortable doing something that will render me unable to go back to stock.

With that being said, I "will NOT ever, ever, everrrrr" weld my headers. WeeeEEEEEEee will never ever, everrrrr, weld our headers....

There are body building forums for that kind of thing...

And definitely weld them. Its the best way to ensure a total seal to the block.

That's just plain insanity. Welding them to the block. I was just bicurious because I've seen people weld them to blocks, which I find crazy and wanted to know if bolting them on will be as safe

OICU812 06-26-2013 04:40 AM

Lol is this a post for laughs or serious???:iono:

JP 06-26-2013 04:43 AM

please post pics of stainless flanges welded to alloy heads :p

vgi 06-26-2013 08:01 AM

if I were you I wouldn't buy just headers, I would look for headers already welded to the head so that then I could simply bolt on.
now, since you did buy specific headers already I beleive you should follow what the manufacturer says and if you are not sure, you'd be better off asking him than making a whole thread (although in this case I really appreciate it as it does make my commute this morning so much better)

please let us all know if fa20club says you should weld those

GTB/ZR-1 06-26-2013 08:11 AM

I have welded together every single mating surface on my car that didn't melt in the process...

My car will NEVER, EVER come apart!!! lol

SloS14 06-26-2013 08:39 AM

Welding headers on is just stupid. I would suggest brazing, and/or zip ties.

FR-S Matt 06-26-2013 08:40 AM

Mind = blown after reading this post.

I don't know anything about the SRT exhaust, but it's a bolt-in deal, right?

Foobar 06-26-2013 09:14 AM

Wait, what? Why would you weld headers on to your block? And I also see that you've welded your SRT exhaust in place, welded on to what?

Please don't take offense to this question, but where the hell have you seen people weld headers to their blocks?

This is a photo of a Cosworth F1 engine. Take note of how the header (exhaust manifold) is bolted to the block. If it's good enough for F1, it's good enough for your 86.

Bolt them on. Your factory headers are bolted on and are fine, the FA20Club header will be the same. Put new gaskets on and you should be golden. You could probably even reuse the OEM gasket, but as cheap as they are, i'd put new ones on the first time.

rx3 06-26-2013 09:51 AM

You couldn't weld them onto the block even if you wanted to, as the block consists of aluminum and the header consists of steel.

industrial 06-26-2013 10:01 AM

Is this code for butt sex? Can't keep up with the lingo.

Psh you fools are still running steel headers? You should use aluminum headers for ultimate weight savings and reliability.

SloS14 06-26-2013 10:44 AM

I welded a turbo to a manifold before. I'm not proud of it but it happened. 16g CRV

Fett4Real 06-26-2013 10:54 AM

The OP may mean did you weld you header to the overpipe

FRS-Chief 06-26-2013 11:01 AM

If you buy a quality header and use new quality gaskets you shouldn't need to weld them. You can weld aluminum to steel but the process isn't easy.

This. If you can figure out a way to weld aluminum to steel then you are going to be a very rich man.

Jeff86 06-26-2013 11:19 AM

psh... JB Weld ftw. Easily mates any surface anytime with the world's strongest bond. You bet your ass my header's welded on.

I have never, EVER, seen someone weld the headers to the head.

Also, since our heads are aluminum and headers are not, welding isn't an option.
