Hi, MR2 Turbo guy getting a Scion FRS

Just wanted to say Hi to everybody.

I've been a long time Toyota guy and it only seems natural for me to progress to the Scion FRS. The FRS will be my daily driver and the MR2 will always be the garage queen/weekend warrior.

I haven't gotten the FRS yet, but I'm 100% going through with getting one. I'm looking to get the Ultramarine blue but the dealership said that those are near impossible to get (I'm in Ontario, Canada). Hopefully they can find me one without having to wait too long.

I was originally thinking about trading in my MR2 turbo but I'm going to keep it now. The dealership is going to give me peanuts for my MR2 so forget it.

Here are some pics of my old-school Toyota.

It's just a gen3 3sgte with bolt-ons and water/meth injection.

Hopefully within the next month I will be in an Ultramarine FRS :)

UPDATE July 6, 2013

Well, I FINALLY got it

The dealership was in awe at how sexy the colour was. They've never seen a blue one yet. They all agreed that it was the best colour :)

Big shout out goes to Steve at Heffner Toyota/Scion/Lexus. Without him, this deal wouldn't have ever been so easy and smooth. The best car salesman I've ever dealt with. Truly amazing service. Steve was a pleasure to deal with and went above and beyond! Thank you, Steve, you're the best.

Anyways, here are some quick camera phone pics.

I took delivery with only 15kms. YES, 15kms!!! Here's the odometer showing a bit more since I took this picture once I got home.

I did say I was a Toyota guy, right? ;)

Thanks for viewing and I'm officially a part of the club now

Nice MR2!! When I sold my car to wait for a FRS/BRZ i was looking at MR2s to learn how to drive a M/T but ended up with a old beater civic..hopefully you get your FRS soon!

cobrabyte 06-24-2013 02:22 PM

Curious... how much were you wanting to get for your MR2?

radroach 06-24-2013 02:32 PM

Where is the oil cap on that engine?

Bt216 06-24-2013 02:36 PM

I still miss ny mr2 . Bought it for 800 sold it for 2000. It was rusty underneath that's why I sold it. I felt so cool taking the roof off

Geography plays a huge role in a cars pricing. In California, an mr2 turbo is worth nothing because they're everywhere. But where I live, Canada, MR2 turbos are extremely rare (Japan only sent them to Canada for 91-93) so that dictates a higher value here.

To be honest, I was looking to get close $10k for my mr2. I know that might be quite a bit high for the car but here in Canada, that's actually a good deal for clean 20+ year-old car, no rust, and mechanically perfect. Especially since I live in the rust/snow belt, having no rust on the car adds quite a bit of value. Original paint and in good condition too.

The dealer told me $7200. I laughed and said I that I'm much better off keeping it. The wheels alone are worth $3000.

Anyways, I'm extremely excited to add an FRS to my stable. Hopefully very soon. Within the next month.

Look at the throttle wire and behind it you'll see the cap LOL.

TRUE!

I still think it looks better than the FRS. The MR2 has some sort of "exotic'ness" about it. It's called a "poor mans Ferrari" for a reason. The MR2's styling is timeless and I always still catch myself doing the turn-around to look at the car. Not to say that the FRS isn't sexy because it's gorgeous! But I still think the MR2 looks better even if it's 20+ year's old.

I'm keeping it.

yeleng22 06-24-2013 02:50 PM

Nyob zoo. Nice car!

I remember when I had mine everybody used to look at the car. The shifting was awsome , was precise. I haven't had manual transmission like that one yet. I liked the headlights and how they pop up... definitely a real sport cars

thill 06-24-2013 04:13 PM

I really love those MR 2's (it most definitely looks like a mini Ferrari) and don't blame you for keeping it. That said, I think you will really love the FR-S too :)

autobrz 06-24-2013 04:44 PM

welcome from a former sw20 owner. :)

Muaddib 06-24-2013 08:56 PM

I also had a mr2 turbo back in my younger days. The frs is a heck more practical than the deuce.

Mr.Zoolittle 06-24-2013 10:07 PM

I have owned 3 MR2 Turbos, I love them. I was looking for one before I bought my FR-S. You will love the FR-S, not as much power as the MR2 though.

Isometric Bacon 06-24-2013 11:45 PM

I own both a N/A AW11 and a turbo SW20 MR2s. Amazing cars. The AW11 in particular was my pride and joy. Driving anywhere in that car was always a blast, as the steering was so direct and responsive, and it always felt like an extension of your body.

I wouldn't have even considered buying a new car until I heard about the 86 and took one for a test drive. It ticked all the right boxes that no other car but the AW11 did, with the advantage of being 30 years newer!

msile 06-25-2013 12:12 AM

I still have my MR2 Turbo with 64k miles in mint condition. Good luck!

FRSupra 06-25-2013 12:21 AM

Sup man, there are two rules here:

1, don't trade your MR2 and

2 don't settle for any color fr-s than you want. One will come around. Ultramarine is the best looking color on the car.

behind Hot lava of course.

hmong337 06-25-2013 01:17 AM

Thank you for the warm welcome guys. Good to see that this forum is less with the douche baggery attitude. Also, it's good to hear from other mr2 owners or former owners.

I love the FRS and everything about it except for one thing... NO ARMREST! Seriously, it's quite annoying that the car does not have an armrest. I know that there are aftermarket solutions for equipping the FRS with one but why Toyota didn't put one in to begin with boggles my mind. It would've been nice to have an ergonomically engineered armrest from the OEM. It's quite bothersome that it doesn't have one.

With the mr2, the entire center console is the armrest. So when you sit in the mr2, you literally feel the car wrapped around you with your hand falling perfectly onto the shifter. And this was a car designed 20 years ago. The FRS without the armrest, sadly feels like another regular car. I was hoping for better driver ergonomics from a brand new car of this caliber.

That's the only complaint I have with the FRS. Everything else is perfect.

Muaddib 06-25-2013 01:28 AM

I am fairly certain armrest is an option in the Japanese version of the frs.

hmong337 06-25-2013 02:11 AM

I don't get why it should be an option... It should've been built into the car! Oh well.

Just from a quick search, there's already tons of guys making them. I'll just go ahead and pick one up from the aftermarket. Having no armrest is a pretty big deal to me. Especially since this is going to be my DD.

K2 06-25-2013 09:55 PM

I love my FR-S but I miss my 93 MR2.

campy 06-25-2013 09:59 PM

The MR2 is one of the coolest cars I would never buy.

phloozy 06-25-2013 10:04 PM

I always wanted an mr2, nice looking car

I totally get where you are coming from. I was planning on going aftermarket for an armrest, but having driven the car for a month, I don't feel I need one anymore. I just rest my arm on the ebrake if I feel the need.

hmong337 06-26-2013 03:09 PM

So I finally put a deposit down... They are now in the process of find an Ultramarine Blue FRS for me :)

Hopefully they find one soon as I HATE waiting!
