Paint issue, not rail rust.
Anyone else notice spots beginning to show on their hood, roof, and trunk? Looks like the paint is pulling up from the primer, and the clear is lifting off. More and more show every week, and once they show, they begin to expand. Looks terrible. It's not something like bugs, tar, or sap on the paint or clear coat surface. Only 1700 miles, garage kept. Thoughts?
|
My thoughts are you need to take it back and have it looked at by a dealer. I haven't seen a single other 86 do anything like that.

If you can get some good shots of what you're seeing it would probably greatly assist in identifying the issue! Sorry to hear that you're having paint issues though... Considering how new your car is with the mileage you're in a great position to work with the dealer on a solution as the warranty should cover manufacturing defects in the paint. |
Haha I was expecting that response. I'll see if I can get some good ones, kinda hard to see on the pics I have taken so far.
The dealer said it's probably acid rain... However they sent me to a collision repair shop up the street, and they said it looks like factory defect. I'm waiting for a call back from the toyota/scion rep so he can come take a look at it. |
Can you push on the defects? Are they like bubbles?
|
I have sort of slight cloudy spots/smears, that don't clean off. Is that what you are seeing?
|
I do have a few of those cloudy spots/smears as well, but these are different.
Not quite bubbles, but in the worst spots the paint is definitely chipping/peeling away from the primer underneath. I'll see if I can get some better pics tonight under the right lighting with a good camera. |
I've got to get a better camera...but here are a few on the roof, but it's like this all over the hood, roof, and trunk:

Any sign of impact?
|
Not that I can tell, but I'm no expert. These are just a couple examples, it varies in severity all over the car.
|
I am having this exact issue with my raven frs. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they took pictures and are sending it to someone higher up in the service dept to see if they will fix it. The Service manager that looked at it was trying to play it off as environmental damage. Never seen a cars paint come off from bird shit being on the car for a couple of days, especially one this new. Quote from the dealers body shop was $3800. http://i.imgur.com/ULW7jUZ.jpg

Wow, that sucks. I'm no expert but it looks like uncured paint to me.

Thanks for your post. That is exactly like mine...I knew the paint quality was poor but that is ridiculous! I have never had this issue before. I detailed cars for 5 years and never noticed anything that bad. I am waiting to hear back from the regional scion rep to set up an appointment so that he can come out to see the car. I'll be sure to let you know what he says. |
Again, sorry that you guys are having issues but thanks for keeping the community updated! Interested to see what the final determination is along with what fix is provided.
(And thanks for the pics! ;)) |
So my dealership contacted me and decided that this was environmental damage and was not a flawed paint job. They did however decide to pay for the car to be repainted. Pretty lucky to have an awesome dealership and service dept at Beaman Toyota.
also clean bird poop off your car as soon as you see it. |
Interesting... Thanks for posting the outcome and glad to hear you have great support from your dealer!
|
Almost looks like battery acid type damage. Anybody not like you or your new car?
|
Regional rep said environmental damage, and stated it's not under warranty. Dealership is not going to do anything for me. Looking at my options now. Glad you had good luck at your dealership, that's awesome.
|
I noticed part of my paint bubbled up yesterday. I was wondering what it was and when I touched it the paint just fell off.
|
Well, looks like I could be in the same boat guys. Have a few places starting to show where no dirt has been. I also haven't allowed the car to sit dirty for more than two weeks unless due to rain and it is garage kept. Will be visiting dealer on Friday where I will point out what I'm seeing. Also may swing by a trusted auto body shop for their opinion too. Will update accordingly. Also, for the record I have had my car just over a year and near 17500 miles on the clock.
|
I got something similar on my Firestorm. It's all over my Hood, Fenders, Roof, and one rear quarter. I always notice new ones after a car wash. Ill take some pics and post when the weather clears up a bit.

I also have this issue; discovered after washing my car.
I've already sent the dealer an email with this same picture, so I'll see what they have to say. The paint in this area is lifting indicating adhesion failure so I'm confident this is a manufacturing defect. *Edit* This peeling issue is on my hood. |
Wow this makes me nervous.
|
The more people that report this, the more likely that toyota will identify it as an issue and fix it.
|
dang, that paint looks very very thin. like it was done in a hurry.
|
Just a follow-up on what I've done after I found my paint issue on the hood:
-E-mailed the service manager at the dealer with pictures. -Took in my car to the dealer. The service guy took pictures of the paint defect and sent it to the District Service and Parts Manager. -Few days later, was notified that the paint damage was caused by "something environmental such as bird dropping" (this analysis was only based on pictures, so I'm not convinced) -However, they agreed to a "one time" good will repainting. -Set up appointment with body shop, and now I'm stuck driving a mini-van for the next few days, ugh... My car had around ~1900 miles at this point. Hope this helps for those who have issues with their paint. |
The paint has to be terrible IMHO if it can't withstand natural environmental situations such as bird crap. I've owned alot of cars and I've NEVER had issues with paint bubbling or peeling off as shown above. I've heard of using fewer layers of paint to save weight, but this is ridiculous.

I actually been having paint issue for a while now.
Basically looks like there are bubbles between the clear coat and the actual paint, and this is through out my car size ranges from 0.5cm to 2cm diameter. Toyota (actual Toyota) field rep documented, but done nothing. Told me if gets worse in the future then bring it in again.... I'll get some pics later, if anyone else have similar problems.. |
Well, this sucks. Thankfully, I don't have the issue, but I'll keep my eyes out for it.
Interesting thing is that my 07 civic is getting a near full repaint for paint issues as we speak. She's in the shop for 3 weeks for the repaint. Hondas had issues with the primer they used on the hood and front fenders as well as the roof and trunk clear not being thick enough. If anything is to became of this, it won't be any time soon. KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!!! if you are paying for this fix out of pocket. I know that if we had gotten this fixed previously, you can get reimbursed! |
I know this is a fairly old thread, but I would like to add that I have had my brand new 2014 Raven FRS for about 4 weeks now and I am already seeing bubbling in the clear coat all over the car. Hood (already chipped completely off in 1 spot) roof, trunk, quarters and bumper.
Taking to dealer hopefully today. I did send a complaint to Scion USA and was basically told "tough" |
I park under a tree and birds terd on my car like crazy! I will check this after work.
My thoughts are it will be worth the cost of a car cover to avoid this issue. My car is silver, so I could have easily over looked this. :eyebulge: My car has 4,600 miles on it, bought it new, have owned it for almost 2 months. |
Maybe I'm not seeing what you guys are seeing but these pics all look like rock chips and environmental damage to me. Not paint self destructing.

The first page pictures are mostly from the roof, I'll post mine after I wash. If it was an impact of enough magnitude to chip the paint I'd expect some deformation of the sheet metal to go with it. Sure I'll buy in on 'environmental damage' but that's over half the point of paint anyway isn't it? To protect the car from the environment. |
Quote:
Not necessarily. You can chip paint without damaging plastic or metal beneath it. It's not made of metal or plastic after all. Though being on the roof is unusual but I've seen other weird stuff like black spots on a roof digging into paint. Paint is there to protect from corrosion, not necessarily erosion. With modern water soluble paints, hard to say. Paint seems more about compliance with federal environmental mandates than protection these days. We do have cheap paint though, certainly wouldn't pass muster with Lexus. I'd seriously recommend anyone getting a new twin letting it cure in your garage a week or two and applying a good sealant glaze like Menzerna after a quality detail or paint correction. It's not clear bra but I think it helps cheap paint like ours a bit when it's rather fresh and brittle. |
lol wait until you guys see the rock chips on the front of the car...
i've pretty much given up on that... |

:iono: the only one that went through the paint also chipped the plastic, no sheet of film was going to stop it. |
On my hood I've got about 4 small dots where just the clear coat is missing. Almost looks like it could be from road debris or gravel. I just finished sealing and then wax on top of sealant. Gonna watch it very closely. Man I wish I have protected my paint at the beginning of winter. Spots are so small you can't notice them until you put face 12 inches from hood surface. Your defects look larger in size than what I have

You'd be surprised what a sheet of certain types of plastic can stop. |
