FR-S Curiousity

So I've been reading around the thread for pretty much the entire morning about the issues and the threads about whether it is better on waiting for the >'14 FR-S.

Personally, '14 models aren't exactly far away but regardless of whether I want to be an original owner or a waiter the main issue on my mind is the issues that are showing up with the car. I'm not talking about the small issues such as water condensations and such but more to the rare cases about blown engines or faulty engines.

I don't know much about the reliability of this car (I don't plan to track it but I'll probably be putting a majority of highway mileage than city). Are blown engines and engine problems more of a tracked-car problem? Or simply the 4ugse?

I know there will probably be some recalls and known problems here and there but after that will there be a lot of extended-maintenance needed?

(sorry for being a newb) :(

All I know is that I'm at almost 11,000 miles and I have zero issues, and have not regretted my purchase.

I'd say it's a high probability that the guys with issues are pushing the limits of the car, or are REALLY rough with it (not to say that they shouldn't be.)

Loving mine. Have almost 6000 miles and no issues. ...

My first frs had
A new clutch, flywheel, transmission, three fuel pumps, ecu, cel issue, idle dips, window switch, shifter knob, tail light condensation and 23,000 miles when it was lemon lawed out.

I still don't regret getting it. Toyota took care of me. I didn't drive the car on track just a little auto cross a few times and hard around town.

I say why wait when Toyota will fix issues that you have. Plus I got a 100k warranty out of the deal.

:thanks:

Have you ever taken it in for any recalls?

suaveflooder 06-11-2013 08:43 PM

Only blown motors I've seen are from people tracking them or with FI. Get an oil cooler if you plan to open track the car (this is just my opinion...a cool car is a happy car on the track). Other than that, leave it stock for a bit (at least engine).

20,000 miles no issues.

tbwoodlee 06-11-2013 09:25 PM

I'm also 20,000 miles no issues or no recalls.

Bt216 06-11-2013 09:27 PM

So far no issues .. just the cricket noise

Two in the drive. One 09/12 AT, other 04/13 MT. Zero issues, 5 star fun!

Only time will tell.

Out of curiosity, which set up do you like better?

Touge_ninja 06-11-2013 11:51 PM

13k miles and loving every mile added!! Only regret getting the color I have right now

Pandanoid 06-12-2013 12:00 AM

Thanks for all the input! I will be looking to get my first FR-S soon and officially join the club! :D

'13 6MT here, Build date 04/12, took delivery 6/12. almost 17,000 miles. I've had the left side front 1/4 window replaced due to a bad seal, and the car goes in for a new right side tail light tomorrow. Nothing major.

Check the Issues/Warranty/Recall subforum:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=72

There have been two confirmed issues that could affect an FRS/BRZ/86 that would require major rework.

1. Check Engine Light/Slip Light error which never got a real solid answer seems to be eliminated. This resulted in a couple blown motors, a couple replacements and a couple of services requiring replacement of camshaft/timing equipment/ecu replacement. Again this seems to have been "solved".

2. Injector seals blowing out, current root cause is said to be shifting at or near redline and when you step back on the gas the engine will knock, over time this will degrade the seals until they no longer seal the combustion chamber causing a lean condition, more knock and eventually things break. The fix should be an ECU update to fix the transient timing tables to prevent the knock under hard acceleration, but there is concern that it may be caused just by heat buildup, in which case a new seal design will have to be released or they will have to find a way to keep the engine cool (lol). If you avoid hard shifting at redline (or at least are easy getting back on the gas after a shift) there shouldn't be any major issues.

Everything else is small or a one in a couple thousand fluke.

But like everyone else here I'll post anecdotal evidence: 10k miles, zero issues.

I prefer MT as that's what I've always driven. Wife drives AT primarily. MT better acceleration, but I can't knock the auto. It retains the fun factor very well.

Just over 11 000 Km's here and ZERO issues!

No regrets about pulling the trigger on the 13.

Are you smoking pipes ? Knowing it a TOYOTA and you are doubting it RELIABILITY ? What do you smoke ?

Well.. it seems like most of mechanical parts are from Subaru. Not saying Subaru is not reliable, just saying it's not 100% Toyota.

I put about 5600 miles and it's been great so far.

Whitigir 06-12-2013 10:26 AM

Even if it is not 100% Toyota. I wouldnt think Toyota would allow even one platform to ruine his reputation.

DarkSunrise 06-12-2013 10:28 AM

The only major widespread engine issue that I know about is the idle/CEL issue, which was fixed by a simple dealer ECU reflash.

The DI seal issue is not nearly as widespread, and so far has mainly affected guys who track their cars hard. I'm keeping my eye on it, but it looks like another dealer ECU reflash might be the easy solution. Fingers crossed.

I'm getting mine on Friday! Maybe I'll see you around!

PR FR-S 06-12-2013 01:19 PM

14K plus miles on mine.Took delivery on October 11. No issues whatsoever. Great fun little car. One of the main reasons to buy my FR-S was that it was being built by Subaru. I've owned 4 Subarus in a span of 10 years and those things are bulletproof.

jarviz 06-12-2013 04:52 PM

23K miles and only had the tail-light moisture issue. And crickets of course if that is still seen as an issue. I kinda think of the crickets as the car's trademark sound now haha. if it doesn't have crickets, then it hasn't been properly broken in yet. :bonk:

jeffchap 06-12-2013 05:25 PM

Oh, just stop stewing over it and go get one. You can find the build date on a sticker inside the driver's door, if you want a more recent one. I wouldn't count on any major changes for 2014. Mine was built in March of this year, and I haven't had any problems yet, not even crickets.
