My turn at the curse - Hit and run

UPDATE:
I went to the cops this morning and it took about 1h30. Got the guy's name and policy information, it was real easy actually, the cops were helpful and said if all cars had those it would make their jobs easier! The car will get repaired at no cost and I'll have a loaner. Here's the video for y'all!

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tnH7jVitu8"]hit n run high res - YouTube[/ame]

So I went to crappy tire and when I came back to my car I notice the front bumper was poped at the fender, and had black marks. It kinda looked bad at first sight, then I just drove home to check the footage. Turns out the dodge ram on my left just took off and rubbed his back wheel ever so slighty againt the corner of my car.

My dad called me angry that I didn't call the cops (he say my facebook post..lol), I told him to chill out I have a camera evidence anyway with his plate (the guy obviously didn't notice my car at all. However I'm not too sure I want to do anything, to me this is a very minor thing, it basicly look like a rock chip and when I buff it out the superficial scuffs will disappear. The fender, headlight and corner lights are totally untouched, the signal light was scuffed in the corner almost impossible to tell and the bumper snapped back into place and lines up with the fender perfectly. The last pics shows the area after I cleaned the rubber/waxed it.

What would you do? To me it's not worth losing my car for a week or two and end up with a possibly miss matched/repainted bumper and possible more damage because some shops just suck.

wrxgoose 06-09-2013 06:11 PM

honestly, since you have all the information (dude's tag) that you need to make a report, i'd say go for it. it'd possibly teach him to pay more attention, and keep this, or something worse, happening to someone else's car.

Scionshaun 06-09-2013 06:33 PM

Agree!

CAMBAM_6 06-09-2013 06:34 PM

Um negative nobody should be hitting anybody's car and just taking off..I would report em and get my shit fixed right plain and simple..and there are plenty of reputable shops that do a great job just do your research

roddy 06-09-2013 06:48 PM

Sorry to see this happened. I'm with those above....minor damage or not, it's just wrong to take off. Maybe this "person" didn't even realize they did it...they need to start looking where they are going. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to teach 'em that lesson.

File a claim with the insurance company and give them the plate. They will take it from there, depending on your insurance.

Had something similar happen to one of my trucks. Gave the insurance the plate and they tracked the person down. Not a cent out of my pocket and fixed to my liking.

Thx. I'll send the video to my insurance and I'll follow their advice. I'm trying to edit the damn things cause I obviously don't want them to see the whole footage of my reaction and my driving/singing lol.

charged86 06-09-2013 07:31 PM

Atleast it wasn't a game changer. Sorry buddy :(

FRiSson 06-09-2013 08:20 PM

Ram drivers are the worst

Septic 06-09-2013 08:32 PM

Sorry to see the curse has struck again. To the OP, you need to report it ASAP to your insurance, at the very least. My insurance provider gives a 24 hour timeframe to report from the time of the incident.

IMHO, you should also report it to the cops. Hit and run is illegal, and the idiot in the truck should be able to drive without hitting parked vehicles.

PStaff716 06-09-2013 08:36 PM

Gotta file a report. Sad to see how inconsiderate some people can be.. At least it wasn't too bad!

Dake 06-09-2013 08:48 PM

Yeah, file it. The only thing worse imo than someone doing that and running is someone not even realizing it. If you're going to drive a giant truck you better freakin' pay attention to those around you. The next thing this idiot might unknowingly sideswipe could be someone on a bike.

Rayme 06-09-2013 10:25 PM

So I watched the video and it turns out we clearly see the plate when I get in the parking, I should have a good case, heading to the police tomorrow first thing in the AM..I got a thumb drive with the video and still frames of the truck with the plate clearly visible.

I hope this camera pays out!

Will post video once it's all sorted out.

Wo6M 06-09-2013 11:12 PM

That's a good idea I hope it works out

jacobzking 06-09-2013 11:21 PM

whats this camera system you're talking about?

Burrcold 06-09-2013 11:38 PM

Hope all works out!

can you elaborate on your setup? sounds like a good investment. yours probably paid off already, even with just the small damage.

#87 06-10-2013 01:12 AM

Honestly is it worth the time? I'd try to get his address using the plate and stop by. If he seemed like a **** head file a report if he was a nice guy just let it go.

KritiK 06-10-2013 02:26 AM

I would go for it, at least to make him learn a lesson, that if you touch other people cars maybe you get recorded so leave a note or something.
ps: my mind make a picture of a superfat guy on his ram eating a cube of chicken from KFC while he was backing up, lol

Rayme 06-10-2013 09:45 AM

Bump for video

drew_dice27 06-10-2013 10:25 AM

What camera set up do you have? Link if possible, thanks.

As far as reporting things I say try and take care of it without insurance. You have the guys information, I would go to him and show him what he did. Go get an estimate and tell him that he can pay you cash to fix the damages and no one will know about it. If he doesn't want to do that tell him you'll report it as a hit and run and take it up with the police and insurance. He'll most likely oblige to paying cash. If you don't mind the car as is, put the money towards something else in your car or just pocket it. Win win I say

Dake 06-10-2013 10:43 AM

It would be one thing if you saw the guy pulling out and stopped him at the moment. But showing up at his or her house or even figuring out the phone number and calling takes it into an entirely different realm. That kind of interaction might go smoothly but will far more likely result in the other person being aggressively defensive at best.

Outside of the safety aspect, you would also weaken your case with the police by trying to do it on your own and open yourself up to harassment charges or even extortion by suggesting it gets handled outside of normal channels.

You're on the right track at this point; let the professionals handle it.

*edit: didn't see the video up top - glad it worked out.

#87 06-10-2013 10:54 AM

THe sound is way worse than the resulting damage. Sounds awful

Curious about how insurance respond when you say you have a video of the incident.

Tt3Sheppard 06-10-2013 01:42 PM

Well with insurance depending on your state you can report the damage, take a check and use it to repair it with your own means. My suggestion at least

Rayme 06-10-2013 02:25 PM

The camera I have is this cheap one, the DVR-037. It was about 50-60$, the SD card was more expensive. It's hard wired with a 32 GB SD card, I record at 720p @ 20 FPS. Gives about 16 hours of video before overlapping itself again.

It's a no brainer, the insurance and cops were actually enthusiast about me having the plate and video..it's not a hard case.

#87 06-10-2013 02:39 PM

You have an install pic? Looks huge but probably just the picture.

It's actually very small. It's held by a screw and a PC case expansion slot cover, cut and drilled. The wires runs in the headliner and uses the stereo power input(the camera uses very low 5volt power), it has it's own fuse.

slicktop 06-10-2013 05:11 PM

Who the hell turns their wheel like that before pulling out of a spot? I mean, really.

Dake 06-10-2013 06:01 PM

I think it's pretty clear the idiot approached and climbed in from the driver's side and didn't even look in their mirror to see if anything was next to them - they thought it was an empty slot.

That camera's not bad. I take it NB doesn't have any laws regarding radar detectors? I could see a cop hassling you in some areas, not realizing what it is.

zoomzoomers 06-10-2013 06:09 PM

Hold on a dag gone minute! Where did you get that cool white doll in the cup holder (last pic)??? It's awesome!!!

In all seriousness, do what makes you sleep well at night. That's what matters most in this world. Well, that is, if you have a conscience.

Personally, I'd report him just to teach him/her a lesson (in a good way). That when you drive a monstrosity that is an America pick up truck, you must ALWAYS look where you're going.

fistpoint 06-10-2013 06:54 PM

It won't cost the driver a penny(unless his rates go up), file away. You have no choice in the "fleeing the scene" aspect, so there won't be any extra consequences for the driver...as he may not even have noticed.

They asked if I wanted to charge him with hit and run I said I just want my car fixed and get his insurance info. The 2 insurance company can sort that out. They probably like that there's no criminal charge in play but it's probably going to put his rates up in my opinion.

Interesting, must be a local law. The one time it happened to me the police said it wasn't my decision and did nothing about it, citing the extreme difference in the weight of her "tank" versus my Civic. I did get paid though, after only a few extra days of hassle.

v12 06-10-2013 07:47 PM

does camera is power all the time or it start recoding from the hit, or event it torn off after couples of minuets when car is torn off?

I got the same model last week. Works great. Based on price, thinking about a second one for the rear.

My thoughts exactly.

jaime3 06-11-2013 04:05 AM

stuff like this is such a pain in the ass. just last week i found out that someone had did the same thing to my rear bumper and i have no clue on who did it. i hardly drive my frs to not put so many miles into it so noticing it was easy. im super pissed off. im not sure either if i should just go to the dealer to fix it or if i should just go to a body shop who said he would charge me 250:/

gzpermadi 06-11-2013 11:46 AM

charge him!

I am tired of people who cannot drive and yet they buy something big like that truck.
Especially moms with SUV. They want collision-safe car but IMO they are putting more danger to other drivers.

This so much.

If he drove straight forward and then turned the wheel while looking into the sidemirror nothing would have happened.

I'm also going to invest in a dashcam. Someone hit my brothers car last week and fled the scene. Too much shit like this happening these days.
