Debadging - How difficult will it be?

I've never debadged a car (at least not on purpose). I really don't like the front badge on the FRS. How difficult is it to remove, and will there be paint issues? (Of course, realizing no one has seen the car up close enough to know for sure)

Also, I really wish instead of the one on the back they had put the "SCION" letters from the prototype, but I can live with that one.

I'm also thinking of replacing the fender "86" badge with the panels from the Subaru, maybe reattaching the 86 on top of it.

Kuzuri 02-18-2012 01:09 PM

i know that i WILL be debadging my fender vents. im sure that all the badges have the little pins on the back of them so when you take them off there will be holes in the part that they came off. So those will have to be filled and the part repainted. This is how it was with the garnish on my tC, the front bumper is obviously a bigger issue... i plan to debadge it completely though..... in time....

Saibot 02-18-2012 01:23 PM

Do you have another badge to put on (ie a toyota one)?
i know some guys who always would swap his regular honda badges for the red type-R's and it seemed pretty simple. Just tooth floss would take the old badges right off.
ofc though you need something to put back on it :p

Mr.Jay 02-18-2012 01:26 PM

not really hard to do

there will be 2 holes on your hood after tho that u can fill but then have to paint.

I'm gonna debadge the back and put a toyota badge up front

r4m3n 02-18-2012 01:51 PM

Any one know which size toyota badge is being used for the front and back?

Rampage 02-18-2012 01:58 PM

I am sure there will be a big market (eBay) for GT86 badges from JDM/

tranzformer 02-18-2012 02:00 PM

"So embarrassed by Scion badge. Must debadge or put on Toyota badge. So embarrassing with Scion."

SUB-FT86 02-18-2012 02:03 PM

I'm doing this as well.

mrybczyn 02-18-2012 03:20 PM

I debadged my Miata, just left the tiny little holes unfilled. They are basically invisible, primed and painted, and the water just drains out the other side of the panel, so it hasn't been a problem, for 8 years now...

I'll be de-badging, and getting rid of any bling and tupperware that is conveniently removed.

Cheers,
Mitch

tranzformer 02-18-2012 03:23 PM

^ tupperware?

mrybczyn 02-18-2012 03:39 PM

Tupperware: ornamental plastic tacked on to an otherwise fine automobile, in an attempt to increase perceived value. See also "Body Kit", "Garnish", "Trim".

Heat gun (see: hair dryer) and some fishing line (see: floss) will get the badges off with ease, especially if the car's fresh off the lot. It only took me two hours to get the badges off my WRX after 8 years when I finally got bored of them. You also may want to use some Goof-Off or similar to remove the left over adhesive and be prepared to wax the area left that was formerly underneath the badges.

As other's have mentioned, there will likely be pins or holes left behind from the larger badges (i.e. Scion logo, 86 fender badges). Be glad you're not buying the BRZ; the trunk logo Subaru has been using for the last half decade is bolted in from inside the trunk and leaves two nasty holes you need to fill/prime/paint.

Hmmm, maybe I'll replace the one on the hood with something more subtle instead, like a bull nose ring. Yea, that ought to do it.

GenkiElite 02-18-2012 04:31 PM

Easy, blow dryer and dental floss is all you should need for the stick on stuff.

Sport-Tech 02-18-2012 07:12 PM

What I'd like to remove is the steering wheel badge, not because of any branding issues, just because the Scion badge is so big and ugly. There may be no easy way to do that though with the airbag there.

Kuzuri 02-18-2012 07:15 PM

i have an idea for the bumper one....

[M] 02-18-2012 08:40 PM

I actually wouldn't suggest fishing line as the first attack against badges, it WILL work however I had some issues during my experience. I noticed that after the debadging it left some micro scratches and it drives me crazy seeing it even today...As others have said, floss will do. I used the synthetic (rubber/film) instead of the fiber type and I was pleased.

#87 02-18-2012 09:37 PM

I just remove the lettering and leave the brand logo.

It is very easy, hairy dryer and credit card or maybe just your fingers. Some rubbing compound if there are some dirt you cant remove which there shouldn't since its new.

As for logos, there are usually indentation in the front and two pin holes in the back so I don't think it is worth the expense to properly remove and looks like crap if you don't properly do it.

maxeveland 02-18-2012 10:24 PM

im asking the dealer to remove the badge for a toyota one. if they cant do it, then its not worth the risk for me

chate 02-18-2012 10:26 PM

It'll be fun to hear people say "that's a scion??" for a while :)

you wont! its super easy. on my tC i debadged the trunk handle myself. You just gotta get the badge out and sand the handle and fill in the "crater" left where the logo was... smooth it out and paint! :)

Fly Guy 02-18-2012 11:46 PM

I want to remove the "FR-S" if there won't be holes and also change to the "86" logo on the steering wheel.

im expecting that there wont be any holes behind the FR-S badge... it should be held on with just double sided tape

If they are gonna do it for free then sweet. If not I'd say that you have nothing to fear about harming the car in anyway. More potential to get road debris damage than mess up debadging. You can do it :happyanim:

tripjammer 02-19-2012 12:22 PM

I am ok with the Scion badges on the outside, but will replace the scion steering wheel airbag cover with a Toyota 86 one.

Dadhawk 02-19-2012 04:27 PM

I'm really OK with the fact it says Scion (if owning a Scion bothered me, I wouldn't buy the car to begin, regardless the mechanics), I just don't like the bright chrome stuck on the nose like that. Wouldn't matter what it said.

I agree. I'm ordering an Ultramarine FR-S and will probably paint the badges matte black, and remove the "FR-S" logo.

That's a good option, I was thinking possibly along those lines as an alternate. THis would also go with the black stripes that's on the Firestorm in one of the review rides. I'm liking the stripes.

Kuzuri 02-19-2012 09:04 PM

yeah theres nothing wrong with owning a scion... idk why people feel the need to rebadge them as toyotas because thyre embarrassed or what not... im fine with it saying scion, i just like a clean look with no badges at all... ill post a pic of what my plan is in here... just give me a sec to crop my Pchop...

EDIT: ok here is what im hoping mine to look like after a debadge.... getting rid of the dip and the lines extending into the hood.... and then ill be putting a scion decal on the lip infront of the grill... and i just made it this nasty green so that you guys cant see the color im planning on.... lmao

Don't really consider debadging, but I want to rebadge the steering wheel to 86.

If they're just tiny scratches as you say, can't you just cut and buff the area? I have had a few scuffs on the clear-coat of my dad's car from some stupid person's shopping cart and it goes away with wash, then wet sanding with 2000 grit, rubbing compound, and wax/polish.

viper_driver 02-20-2012 08:04 PM

I'm betting debadging will be like this....this is my guess.

Both round scion badges will have two holes in the center. Rear will be relatively easy since it's on the license panel. You can just have that small panel filled and painted. I'm betting its made of hard plastic and I'll guess $100 for repaint of just that small panel. The FRS letters on the rear will just be glued on and some fishing line will make quick work of them leaving no trace. The front is another story. I think it'll have two holes which can be filled, but the hood has a body line running to the emblem. It'll look really strange with nothing there, you'll need to replace it with something the same size or it just won't look right. I'm sure someone will do it anyway so you'll get to see how it turns out.

the badges WILL have two pins but im almost 100% sure they wont be in the center. there will be one in either the top left or top right corner, as well as one in the opposite bottom corner. thats how the scion badges were for my tC... and the little photochop i posted above is what it COULD look like if you had the recess in the bumper filled in..

The more I think about it, the more I agree. I'm now leaning towards blacking it out rather than removing altogether. I just don't like that big chrome thing there right in the middle of the hood. A black emblem would look better in my opinion.
