Best Coilover Closest to Stock Ride Comfort?

hi, my gf purchased an frs and we bought some 18" rims so next phase is coilovers. she just daily drives the car so no need to extreme stiff or superior handling coils. just something $1k or less that will ride as close to stock as possible that are within that price range, looking for a soft ride and drop it about 1.5" at most. looking through this forum, i see BC racing being mentioned a lot, and these are the set i might go with. i saw they had a set of bc racing and 5k swift springs front and rear for sales in the classifieds. in terms of spring rates that will give the most softest ride closest to stock, is 5k/5k too weird of a setup? would i need something stiffer in the rear? thanks!

Moto spec RSR

taimysho0 05-28-2013 12:59 AM

what spring rates are those?

dabocx 05-28-2013 01:38 AM

Spring rate is not the only factor when it comes to ride quality. The quality of the damper also takes a huge part in this.

I second this. Been on this for a month already and absolutely LOVE it. My car is my daily driver so I didn't want to ruin ride comfort. The RSR kit on full soft is just as comfortable as stock, just a little stiffer than stock. Feels way more planted. The price may be out of your desired range, but trust me it will be well worth the money.

Mgivens 05-28-2013 03:21 AM

Why don't you get RCE yellows? Save money, get stock comfort levels and improve handling! I feel like for your GF this is the BEST Option

Stay far away from the Eibach R2s, unless you want to know what driving through a war zone is like.

So get it replaced via your warranty, then void the shit out of the warranty and get RCE yellows. Not a better option for the money out there.

guys look what he is asking here before posting up RCE Tarmac or coils of that caliber

for that price you are looking at like Megans and coils along those lines. You need to step up to around 1500 if you want BCs or coils like them.

1000 for coils I would really just get lowering springs and call it a day especially if you dont ever plan to change the coil setup and are only going for low

edit: if under 1k is a must you really only have Megans to look at. They have some mixed reviews but I believe @jasper is finding them pretty decent

taimysho0 05-28-2013 03:45 PM

^thanks for posting that. yea ive been looking around the classifieds for good deals, i recently saw a set of bc racings on there for 1k shipped brand new with swift springs, was just wondering if that combo was good for what im looking for

pmccut 05-28-2013 07:57 PM

I have stance cos on mine right now - they were 1k shipped which is the only reason I bought them. I'm going to sell them once my RCE t2s come in. Cheap != comfortable.

taimysho0 06-05-2013 12:22 PM

i found a seller locally selling bc coils for 900 pickedup at a shop, is this a pretty decent price or should i keep searching?

RCE > BC

Give this thread a read: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37684

taimysho0 06-05-2013 01:28 PM

yea ive seen that thread. only thing is i want the freedom to adjust height, which is why i want coilovers. ive been looking at the bc coils with swift springs lately. i might go that route

You shouldn't make concessions on damper quality just to have the adjustable ride height on a coilover. Otherwise you may regret your purchase after riding around on them for a while. I really think you'll be happier with the RCE offering from a build quality and ride quality standpoint. I don't have personal experience with either but based on what I've read here the aftermarket coilover market mostly follows the "you get what you pay for" sentiment. Also RCE are a forum sponsor here and are very helpful when it comes to answering customer's questions about their products and getting the setup that you want.

Good luck.

the tarmac 2's look pretty sweet, although they kind of look like KW suspensions...

They are built by KW and have the KW logo stamped on them as well as RCE's.

RCE just spec's them to their own liking they feel is best suited for the car + customer and thus sells them as their own.

They are built by KW for us...truly custom valved KWs for the BRZ/FRS. We worked with them to dial in the valving and spring rates even more (and have a lifetime warranty). We've been working with them since 2006.

I have a friend with BC racing and he loves them. His FR-S is a daily driver. I was strongly leaning towards BC (BC is local to me) until I saw the intro deal on the tarmac zeros. BC's with the swift upgrade will be decent and fulfill what you are looking for.

IMO, if you want stock ride quality you don't want coilovers, period. To get a quality coilover you are spending over $2000. If you want to lower your car, get springs or coilover sleeves on stock struts.

taimysho0 06-05-2013 04:12 PM

alright, after much consideration i think im going with springs on oem shocks. i dont need to buy aftermakret bump stops right? im leaning towards swift springs since they have a 1" drop, anyone can compare these with the rce springs?

taimysho0 06-05-2013 04:13 PM

also, i will be mounting 18x8.75 rims on 225/45/18 fornt and 245/40/18 rear tires, so hopefully the drop will make that look good..

UnOvertime 06-05-2013 04:19 PM

I was between the Swift and RCE's for springs as well. The RCE's come with replacement bump stops whereas the swifts do not. You don't NEED aftermarket bumpstops. Swift will have the 1" drop, RCE has about .8" drop. I was swayed to RCE because of the positive reviews, now there should be more about the swift springs on the site. Both are quality so you cannot go wrong with either set.

qoncept 06-05-2013 04:21 PM

If you're going with a mild drop you shouldn't need to replace the bump stops.

Here are the spring rates (kg/mm). The drop roughly equal.

RCE 4.6K F / 4.6K R
Swift Springs 3K F / 4.5K R
Stock FR-S 2.3K F / 3.7R
Stock BRZ 2.6F, 3.5R

The more ratio of stiffness is rear biased, the more oversteer you'll see. I'm very surprised to see the RCEs are equal. I would recommend Swift over that.

taimysho0 06-05-2013 04:55 PM

thanks for everyones help! i pulled the gun on a set of stance with swift springs. it was for a price i couldnt resist. since i will be planning multiple rim setups in the future i want everything looking flushed so the need to adjust ride height is a must, plus the swift springs should keep things nice and soft

Much more than that if you want very good dampers. :)
