No front plate in Texas ticket?

Hi guys,

I have searched on the DMV's website for this but I am having trouble finding the information that I need.

I really don't want to drill holes into my bumper to install the front license plate. I also don't like the offset look of the tow hook license plate mounts from Grimmspeed.

Does anyone have any details on what the ticket is for not having a front license plate? Is it a fix it ticket? How much money is it? I also would like to find out if it could somehow make my insurance rates go up.

Thanks guys.

I just asked my cousin who is a cop and he said there's not a fine right now due to a blooper in the last legislation...

MrMista 05-24-2013 12:26 PM

Yea I had read about that mistake. Does anyone know what it used to be? I can only assume that it is going to be fixed in the next legislation.

Anyways, that is another reason I don't want to install the front plate. If legislation does end up allowing not having a front plate I'd rather not already have holes in my bumper.

Per the following link: http://dallasattorney.com/blog/114-n...y-element.html

Quote:

Due to a mistake on the part of the Texas Legislature, the enforceability of the "no front license plate" statute is now in question. Since 1934, Texas law has required automobiles to have a valid front license plate. This offense was a class "C" misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $200. However, a last minute change in the statute at the end of the most recent legislative session resulted in the punishment section of the statute being inadvertently stricken.

tasinene 05-24-2013 12:44 PM

I'd risk the possible $200 fine before drilling holes in my car.

MrMista 05-24-2013 12:44 PM

So if it gets fixed it may go back to being $200.

Has anyone here been pulled over for not running a front plate? I know the fines been accidentally removed but according to that article it is still "illegal."

texbrit 05-24-2013 12:56 PM

I didnt want to take the risk so I put front plate on but no drilling. Used the tow hook in the front bumper using Grimmspeed kit:

I was pulled over and given a warning

I didnt want to drill through the bumper either so i got the offset kit and i really like it. ill play it safe, because knowing my luck ill get the ticket for it. cops in my area are d-bags.

Shneegle 05-24-2013 01:52 PM

I have not been pulled over so far for no front plate in the FRS yet. I do not plan to put the plate on at any time in the near future either. My old car I got pulled over twice in a short time for not having a plate but it was a rather loud and low drift 240sx so it was I was targeted for it as well. Only ever been given a verbal warning for front license plate.

i lived in Austin TX until last year and just put my plate on the front dash passengers side. never pulled over for it and when i did get one speeding ticket the cop didn't say anything about it.

I haven't been pulled over (I have a front plate), but my dad's buddy got pulled over a year ago for no front plate on his 'vette. Got a ticket, too. So yeah, I don't chance it.

...hence, my no-drill solution for the BRZ:

Living in Round Rock/Austin for 8 years now, I drove a bright red Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Convertible with NO front license plate since 2009 and now my FR-S since November of 2012 and still have yet to be given a warning or ticket. Both front licenses plates are in a drawer in my room, lol.

The front license plate in the window doesn't work... got busted for that when I was 17 years old in a white firebird formula and the cop was a complete *@&! If the cop feels like being a total ass, he will.

I heard they are going to eliminate the front license plate law all together because of some discrepencies. The cameras in intersections all get your rear license plate, toll booths get the rear, and guess what? Cops get yours too from the REAR! I don't see the point of this law, really, but that's just my 2 cents.

I'm glad I do my own work. I wouldn't want someone touching my car. I'll put the plate if the state requires it, but in a non destructive way.

I treat my car like I treat my phone. It's clean, no one touches it, and I'm the only one that mods it.

NFLP is a good way to a get a stop on someone in a pinch...
But I would never issue a ticket for it.

melia 05-29-2013 12:29 AM

no front license plate required anymore starting officially September 1st 2013.

Fantastic news. I knew there was a reason I kept the Tow Hitch Cap in a safe place. Roll on September :D

That would be good news but I don't see any news of this bill actually passing, just that it exists and will hopefully pass.

carbonBLUE 05-29-2013 03:39 AM

Where does it show that. All I can see is that it's left in Pending status in committee. It hasn't failed in Bill Stages. When a committee sends it to pending...does that mean they are just gonna leave it to die off?

You could always go for something like this...

Altec Products Inc. 400EU - Altec Product Show N Go License Plate Transports

*Unsure if animated .gif is using the same hardware as linked above, but I can only assume it is similar

hold on removing my plates and driving around...

TRD_07 06-11-2013 02:46 PM

Hi, I've had mine on the front windshield for about a year with small plastic suction cups and after driving around the city and highways with cops/ state troopers next to me they've never bothered to stop me. On my previous car I didn't have a front plate on and did get pulled over and at that time I was told that a front plate needed to be visible.
