What do you guys use to clean your rims?

Just wondering what you guys use to clean off your rims? I'm still on the stock rims right now. Any Canadians here that know of any good stuff to use from Canadian Tire?

miodculae 05-21-2013 01:24 PM

I like driving during a rain storm, like i did this past Sunday. Gets them clean enough and saves time. Also takes care of brake dust. For anything extra, I suppose there are numerous tire shine products .

qoncept 05-21-2013 01:32 PM

I've never found a cleaner worth using. Rag, soap and lots of water.

xxscaxx 05-21-2013 01:46 PM

I was using this stuff on my stock wheels...worked amazing.

http://www.autogeek.net/wg4600.html

Now I just use soap and water on my uncoated/polished wheels.

Oburn 05-21-2013 02:00 PM

Oh ok so on the stock rims it's not worth buying rim cleaner products, just wash them with water and soap

Pre-treat w/Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner then 2-bucket method with Griot's wheel wands and long bristle brush

Who the hell has time for that? Nah I'm just messing with you.

The best way (IMO) to clean your wheels is to never let them get dirty.

same here everything needs agitation although megs hot rims and mothers all wheel cleaner seem to need the least amount.

Beyer Subaru 05-21-2013 03:00 PM

I use soap and water. I'm to scared of any of the typical acids or other cleaning products.

Depends on what's important to you. A good wheel cleaner (like Sonax) will grab pretty much everything off of the surface of the wheel, and then you agitate with a brush and some quality soap.
If you don't care, then scratch them up with a rag and dish soap.

I agree with this. They are small and cheap. Why worry about them. Just soap and water for me

This. I treat them just like I do my paint. I use wheels only sponges to clean them once I am done with the rest of the car.

Consumer Reports and a million others think wheel cleaners are about as good as 409. Don't rub dirt in to your wheel paint and you won't scratch them. And you're the only one that ever mentioned dish soap. I'll try Sonax but I'm very skeptical.

I have two. Dont laugh, just try it and tell me otherwise. Scrubbing Bubbles. The stuff just works. I used to use L.O.C. from Amway. It is a Liquid Organic Cleaner. If I could find an Amway dealer I would use that also. That stuff will not hurt the finish and will break down grease, tar, anything on your wheels.

Foobar 05-21-2013 03:35 PM

My wheels are opti-coated, so they get soaped and rinsed like the rest of the car, no need for any other detergents or chemicals.

Richard Cranium 05-21-2013 03:42 PM

They're a vendor here...from Detailers Domain...

Dish soap is what I see a lot of average joes use for their home washes. I'm using a worse case scenario. Detailing is what I would consider one of the major "pay to play" hobbies, and that's why most people never experiment with more than what they find at Autozone or Walmart.

The problem with "you get what you pay for" is that "you don't always get what you pay for." I'm perfectly willing to pay more for something that's worth it, but unfortunately, you often just end up with a more expensive piece of crap. My new brushes and Sonax will be here Thursday so we'll see.

Thanks for all the responses, I know the stock rims don't matter too much as they will be replaced eventually anyways, but for now I'm putting money into performance for now. I just wanted to see if they needed special care like the high quality rims or if soap and water is good enough. I'd just like to keep them in the best shape possible for now, even though the are stock rims, they aren't terrible by any means when you compare them to most cars in our car price range that come with stock rims.

They're actually very high quality wheels, probably better than the aftermarket wheels most people put on their cars. I would definitely treat them right.

eljefe 05-21-2013 04:40 PM

I spray mine with diluted simple green, then spray with water, this gets most of the dirt off. Then i wipe them down with a microfiber towel to clean/dry them.

I used to use meguiars wheel cleaner but a jug of simple green is the same price as 1 bottle, and i can make 20 bottles out of a jug.

SubaSteve 05-21-2013 04:43 PM

Just use any all purpose cleaner diluted to the proper ratio should be fine on both tires and wheels.

I agree they are really good rims and since my brz is pearl white it suits them good. But I would like to go with black rims at some point.

What about the wheel wax/polish or is that more so for chrome rims?

I use one of these with the hose shoved in behind my hand. My hand gets cold, but it constantly rinses and does a good job. I only use the mitt on my wheels.

Packofcrows 06-04-2016 05:34 PM

bumping this instead of starting my own thread.

I recommend to spray water, get a small thin towel (like for cleaning grease of hands when working on car) and wet it with some water, then grab some Dawn dish soap (blue one that decreases) and just scrub the rim. Go over it once, spray water, then go over it again 5min later and you'll see how shiny both the rim and the tire get. Then just wax rim and use that black wheel shine gel on tire. Makes your vehicle look brand new!

Had a few car geeks comment on my rims today asking if they were oem or special edition because they were shinier than those others they've seen around.

Norville Rogers 06-04-2016 06:07 PM

Just toilet paper for my rim.

Thanks for asking, awkward to share.

Guessing there must be a bunch of shit on it. Do you use the good soft stuff or the cheap sandpaper kind?
