Is engine knock normal for the FA20?
1 Attachment(s)
I logged some data while driving home. I have a tune. Apparently knock correction is occurring 5-8 time every 5 minutes while cruising. Is that normal? Doesn't seem good. I'm on 91 octane.

According to the manual, some is normal on 91 octane. Serious knocking would be audible (with the windows down).
|
Audible would be knock corrections under -3 degrees if I remember.
|
That's 91 octane for you.
|
I'll probably put the stock map back on tomorrow and see how that looks. As long as there is no engine damage, I'm ok with a little knock :D
|
why can't we have decent gas in this country???
|
My car seems to run well on the 93 we have here. Use to have 94 too, but I haven't seen that for a while.

Depends when it happens.. WOT old be a problem , but normal driving isn't such a big deal...these ecus have a advanced knock control system and normally can deal with this stuff pretty well

I slapped back on the stock map and still knocking. ECU resets itself after flashing right? All these graphs are from Shell 91 octane. |
You'd be surprised how many new engines run like this. It's not just an FA20 thing. It's to maximize gas mileage and sense the octane level.
|
Yeah, I think it's the same reason the new direct injection high compression V6's in the new pony cars can run regular. Same with the Genesis 2.0T and I think the new Focus ST can run regular as well even though it's turboed.

^^ the logs are from light throttle cruising, and happening on the stock map too according to the OP. If this was WOT I'd blame the tune, but seems pretty normal at light throttle.

Let me preface this with I have no experience tuning nor do I have software to do so on this platform.
When I was tuning my personnel GM vehicle I had a persistant knock event, low load and at cruise that I chased for months in the tune to no avail. At some point I had the blower off and found considerable amounts of engine oil coating the entire intake track. After installing an oil catch the issue went away. Theory being oil was hitting the combustion chambers and iniating knock. Just a thought. |
