Saturday 5/25 DRIVE: Pacifica/Hwy 1/Skyline Cruise!

More details to come, but mark your calendars folks... our next major DRIVE event will be Saturday May 25! The voting on the 86DRIVE site is now concluded, the early morning time won by a resounding 78% vote! So we will be meeting at 7:30AM and departure target of 8:00AM. :)

Many of you will remember the great cruise down Devil's Slide we did in March... the last time many of us were able to take that infamous stretch of Hwy 1 before it closed for good a few days later. Well we are going to return now for something a little different... a chance to drive THE MOST NEWEST TUNNEL IN CALIFORNIA! :D The Tom Lantos Tunnels opened on March 25, 2013 and are the first new tunnels to be constructed in California since the Caldecott Tunnels were completed in 1964.

BTW I hear the tunnels are super state-of-the-art and have sophisticated cameras with 24/7 monitoring, so let's not get too dramatic in there. ;)

MEETING POINT 7:30AM:
Let's meet Saturday 5/25, 7:30 AM at the Starbucks at Linda Mar Shopping Center, Pacifica, CA. We will begin the drive at 8:00AM.
Google Maps link to the location: http://goo.gl/maps/JD1zt

ROUTE 8:00AM - 10:00AM:
We will take Hwy 1 south through the Tom Lantos Tunnels, and pass through Half Moon Bay to San Gregorio State Beach. We'll stop there for a group photo like last time, and then do some more driving after that. At our final stop we will probably grab some brunch/lunch somewhere, perhaps at Alice's.

Post-Drive Meet - 10:00AM:
If anyone can't meet us for the drive but wants to meet up at 10 we will be stopping at Alice's around that time. Alice's is at the intersection of Skyline Hwy 35 and Hwy 84.

Hope you can join us! :)

Please bring FRS walkie talkie radios if you have them!

:thanks:

Hey Plato - Were you thinking something like this for the route? http://goo.gl/maps/9z1k2

I'll have to bail at the turn onto Skyline as I made an appointment at Burlingame Mufflers for some exhaust work at 10am, but definitely looking forward to the first leg of the drive.

Let's hope the tunnel cameras don't also have microphones...

clzzical 05-16-2013 11:44 PM

Baaaggh! Out of town that weekend. Please take pics and videos so I can live this drive through you guys :)

Bach415 05-17-2013 12:05 AM

If the result is that the drive is in the morning, then I'm going to skip it cause I won't be able to make it. Might be able to meet up with you guys later but not sure.

yeah that looks pretty good. or alternatively take something like 84 instead of 92. And for those who refuse to wake up early or can't make it that early, we could plan a lunch stop somewhere after that people can join us at.

MyRx 05-17-2013 01:22 AM

Bump :). I have to wait for my daughter's schedule Wed/Thurs to see if I can make this drive.

And also wanted to say PMok has the sickest looking signature IMO. Gotta teach me that one of these days :) :)

Cjymiller 05-17-2013 02:00 AM

I'm gonna miss out on this one. I've got a better alternative already planned. ;)

SC David 05-17-2013 05:24 PM

In for this. Can help plan the route too, if needed.

SnakeEyes 05-17-2013 06:09 PM

Tunnel = Perfect Exhaust Showoff.
20ish Twins in the tunnel at the same time = Mayhem = EarPlugs recommended. (Not for us, for the normal car folks).
Most of us will be looking forward to hear that boxer engine resonating in the tunnel.

monkeedoo 05-17-2013 06:40 PM

looks like fun

MyRx 05-20-2013 09:46 AM

Monday bump.

According to ma work schedule, it's "Thursday" so I'll be on my best behavior for the rest week to perhaps be granted a free-me card so I may drive 5/25.

mengwu 05-20-2013 02:57 PM

hmm oddly when I pull up the place on Google maps it doesn't display any street address. But I added a link to the Google map up top and here: http://goo.gl/maps/JD1zt

1235 Linda Mar Shopping Center, Pacifica, CA seems to work. That's the Donut Time store next to Starbucks.

forzajuve 05-22-2013 05:17 PM

I wish I was not out of town this weekend, otherwise I would totally go. Have a good time! Stay safe.

NorCalGirl 05-23-2013 07:04 AM

I wanna go! I'm supposed to work Friday night and don't get off work until 7:30am Saturday morning.. so I'll try to get Friday night off.. if I can't I'll try to get out early and make it to the meeting spot before 8am so I don't get left behind! Excited to drive through that new tunnel!

mkiisupra 05-23-2013 10:29 AM

Me thinks I can make this run. Its a bit of a haul to get out to starting point at 8am, but I won't be making the trip to IA in the FR-S this summer, so I better get some more miles on her!

Chee-Hu 05-23-2013 02:10 PM

I'm driving down to Monterey for the weekend. I'll be missing this one sadly.

mkivsoopra 05-23-2013 02:58 PM

I'm gonna try to make it to this one :)

racer_tom 05-23-2013 04:40 PM

This sounds like a good drive at a time that will work. I'll plan to be there and look forward to meeting you guys.

PMok 05-23-2013 08:03 PM

Looks like turnout will be good. :)

To the Hayward/CV/Trivalley/UC/Newark/Fremont peeps!
Anyone who wants to caravan like last time, we'll meet at same point in Hayward: Starbucks/Chase bank parking lot on Jackson St just before the 880/92 junction. 6:30AM

dun3 05-23-2013 11:08 PM

Such a busy weekend for me, wish I could make it. drive safe everyone

MyRx 05-24-2013 02:17 PM

I got the green light to go yay. Hayward 630 it is.

Afterwards, I need to stop by Union City NorCal Hobbies. Reedy Race is on and gonna catch some world class 10th scale touring car action. If you're into racing and cars, this is the race to get a glimpse of. World champs will be in attendance. I was gonna race but I've burned my allowances on the FRS :(. $200+ just for this 4-day comp. Then a $600 kit on the side b/c the race car will break parts. Not to mention $160 race batteries that are meticulously maintained. Shaking hands with Tamiy's world champions... priceless. Main event is on Sunday. Make it to UC to see the best in the world battle it out :)

Simpleviet 05-24-2013 02:22 PM

^ You make it sound so epic....Temptation. hahaha:popcorn:

Wow, how many brownie points did you have to use up for the morning drive and the 10scale racing? Lol
