Transmission Strength Comparison

As the aftermarket continues to expand for the GT86/FR-S/BRZ, the yearn for more power is continually sought by owners. As a curious owner speculating on twin turbo'ing his FR-S, I am wondering which transmission is more capable of reliably putting down 300+ ft-lbs of torque: the current Aisin-Warner AZ6 or a Toyota W55 from a 2002-2005 Lexus IS300? I remember, back in the early 2000's, that Toyota was considering the Aisin AZ6 for their 2002 Lexus IS300, but the engineers deemed it too weak to handle the 218 ft-lbs of torque produced by the 2JZ-GE. Instead, Toyota used the W55 because it was deemed more apt to handle the 2JZ-GE's power.

Wes B. 05-06-2013 08:56 AM

Also, would a Tremec T-56 or TR-6060 swap be even remotely feasible?

Hard to find and wicked expensive for a heavily used one. Any other alternatives?

King Tut 05-06-2013 01:25 PM

I haven't heard of anyone damaging the Aisin yet.

Neither have I, but I was simply thinking about how to keep the car running as long as possible with a more potent powerplant.

Wes B. 05-06-2013 07:57 PM

How much power has the AZ6 withstood behind a built SR20DET? Anyone know?

Not that high I assume(500sh) because people would get them fixed every now and then.

OmarGC 05-06-2013 08:12 PM

I'm wondering why someone would TT a 2.0 flat 4... or any 4 cyl in general?

Twin 15mm turbos in a parallel setup set to 9 psi would create the perfect amount of power, and it would give the engine the low-end torque that it's lacking. Plus, it would look sick!

If I had a nickel for every time someone mentioned a small block Chevy swap...

It's not HP that breaks transmissions, it's torque. Since these engines don't have torque output like an SR20DET at the same HP levels they'll stand up much better.

ramiram1984 05-06-2013 11:16 PM

Then you have to worry about axels and having stronger ones installed, etc etc. do some research guy before putting TTs.

Haha I'll be that guy then. How about a 572 aluminum block hemi to increase that low end torque.

Edit: there's no way it would fit though

Chevy 350 :burnrubber:

Crawford was making a lot of torque down low and 475lb-ft at the same HP level. They popped a motor but the trans was okay.

Coheed 05-07-2013 01:08 AM

The transmission lives a short life at that power level. I wouldn't expect AP to still be using the factory transmission. These transmissions look to hold around 400wtq for some time, but I suspect failures to be common once these start seeing higher miles.

Tansey86 05-07-2013 01:18 AM

Don said he was working on a transmission solution. Im assuming given the power levels hes making, he will be replacing damn near every part of that car.

I know. When I said "power," I was referring to the torque of the engine. Still, if these engine are boosted to 300+ hp, they'll be putting out more torque than an SR20DET.

Oh, I've done my research. I'll most likely be settling with FBM's 8.8 IRS rear differential conversion.

This is exactly why I would like to locate a suitable replacement before installing anything crazy. The W55 from Marlin Crawler seems to be just what I am looking for. Just wondering what you guys had in mind.

Stock SR20DET's make 202-210 lb/ft stock, which is around the torque these engines seem to make boosted at around 280-300whp (obviously depending on turbo selection).

My point was simply that at XXX hp an SR20DET is most likely going to have a lot more torque than an FA20 at the same hp, and the transmissions seem to be fine with 300whp SR20's all the time.

R154, used V160/161, look on the supra forums. Hell, if you want a W55, look on the other forums. Its pretty easy. But, you might have to become a member of the forums to see the sale threads.

How does the R154 compare (strength-wise) to the W55?

DavidV 05-07-2013 11:13 PM

The only story where anyone reported breaking anything trans related was when someone caught air while full throttle on track driving a turbo car, this story occurred way back in the day during track testing. Might have been John Visconti or Don? ..Correct me if I'm wrong anyone

And axles have been proven to be a weak point too

The r154's have been known to hold 700whp stock. Possibly a clutch. but, its a wayyy better trans than a w55. People search for the r154 if they are boosting a 2j or 1j if they don't want to fork out 6k for a new v160/161. Besides, you can get parts all day long from Marlin Crawler.

Good call! Parts are widely available, and it really doesn't cost that much more than the W55.

usptwins 05-08-2013 05:14 PM

Yes sir, thats why Supra guys use them if they are on a budget.

Yeah, I'm just surprised that this option slipped by me.

NomoreNA 05-08-2013 10:36 PM

You won't break a marlin crawler r154 with anything under 4 digit numbers and if you do stop driving.

Good to hear! Do you have any personal experience with this transmission or with Marlin Crawler products in general?

Yes I ran a marlin crawler in my swaped mk3 it was making around 700rwtq and my old roommate was also running one he was around 1189rwhp

Kickass! I've always wanted to own an MKIII, but I've always found Mustangs to be easier to work on, cheaper in the long run, and to have more power potential.

If you exceed 500hp. Your on borrowed time. You will be buying another transmission. I've cooked 2

jamesm 07-06-2013 03:19 PM

premature optimization. has anyone even broken a stock one yet at less than absurd power levels? certainly not at the power levels most people are running with fi. save your money and have fun with it, if it breaks, replace it. if not, don't worry about it. no need to go looking for dragons to slay (or problems to throw money at).
