Painted front mustache BRZ

Once i get my brz i plan to paint the front mustache on it the same color as the car. Ive see one picture a very long time ago, i cant find it now. Has anyone tried this and how does the paint hold up on the plastic?

yes it does you just need to get it primed and then painted then top/clear coat. It's like modeling haha all models are plastic then painted and look nice if done well.. Im not sure if theres a texture on the piece tho? Because if there is it would be hard to get a nice even coat

AR35 04-28-2013 08:49 AM

I was going to pay a cutom pant shop to do it. Wasnt going to take on such a big task. 150-200 well spent in my eyes. Just didnt know if you could paint plastic and have it for a very long time.

abutterman 04-28-2013 10:38 AM

i'm curious as well as to how well the paint will stick on this part. i really like that picture of it painted WRB

AR35 04-28-2013 12:06 PM

Yea it looks way better with matching color. No one has seen a car in person actually do this? just photoshop pics?

Flako 04-28-2013 12:48 PM

They sell magnetic ones so u don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it

shiumai 04-28-2013 01:00 PM

the 'moustache' is part of the whole front bumper - it's not a separate part. so, since the rest is painted the colour of the car and is also plastic, there's no reason why painting the moustache would be any different.

Shaun. 04-29-2013 12:29 PM

I really like this idea, so I decided to try Photoshopping it on the silver BRZ:

Burrcold 04-29-2013 12:52 PM

Now instead of a moustache it looks like a smile with big dentures on the lighter cars. I love the moustache, I'll stick with that.

Tylub 04-29-2013 01:07 PM

same "mustache" problem with the s2 rx8s lol.. Japanese people sure love mustaches

AR35 04-29-2013 02:54 PM

Tell me this doesnt look great. Maybe not on the lighter ones but the blues and maybe reds it looks great

That doesn't look great. To each their own, of course, but with the gap and all around it, it's just not my thing.

Excuse the poor photoshop.. Although Elements seems to get the job done handily though.. But this I could go for, I think.

The Groucho Marx one they used is bad enough. :(

The BRZ mustache is the one styling cue on this car that I didn't like... enough that if we'd been offered an FR-S or a GT-86 with the same spec as the BRZ Limited here in the states, I would've likely gone for that instead.

I am surprised that nobody's actually offered an OEM style bumper in urethane that eliminates the mustache like the pic that n2oinferno posted. If I didn't know that SWP was so hard to match, I'd be VERY interested in something like that (if any of you body kit vendors are listening). Actually, I think that I would actually consider painting my car another color if a urethane version of this bumper were to come into existence.

n2oinferno 04-29-2013 05:33 PM

Know what I can't unsee when I look at the BRZ?

Now you can't either. ;)

AR35 04-30-2013 03:54 AM

The point in painting it would be to draw your attention to the hood and down the sides. If in our case we are only looking at the painted bumper then yes, it does look a little weird. i think if the car was just sitting in a parking lot or driving then you wouldnt spend as much time looking at the front/ grill because it doesn't have a huge eye catching black 'mustache'

GH05T 04-30-2013 07:12 PM

Why not just vinyl the stache? I'm planning to do a carbon fiber or a satin black wrap on mine.

Turbowned 04-30-2013 09:33 PM

I think it looks worse painted. I prefer the darker color cars because they mask the "mustache" better, though.

So something like this?

Our new engineer will start on this project next week or so, but it won't be offered in urethane :(

That does look very good, and based on the information you shared with us on your aero thread I'm interested to see where this goes.

My urethane requirement is based on getting a bumper with OEM levels of duribility. I know there are other construction techniques which could result in something that could hold up to the rigors of daily driving. I've seen way too many fibrglass bumpers and lips get destroyed in situations where a urethene bumper would just shrug off the damage.

So I'm definitely interested to see more on this project as you move forward.

So would this front essentially be the OEM FRONT bumper but without the mustache?

31katys 05-01-2013 01:05 AM

It definitely draws more attention to it when you paint it the same color as the car. Doesn't look so bad on the blue, but the silver is bad.

StormTrooper 05-01-2013 04:07 AM

Has anyone thought about just removing the mustache and going mesh grill for the whole opening? would that mess with the aerodynamics?

It covers the bumper beam. You'd probably want to remove it to keep it looking clean.

"Cooling" drag would probably go up.

AR35 05-01-2013 12:53 PM

You cant take it off. It is all one piece, theirs already a thread on trying to take it off. As far as that concept drawing goes, that looks amazing! Why didnt anyone think of this before!?

Kwisak 05-01-2013 01:31 PM

Has anyone done this in GBS / Ultra Marine ?

DNAPoPo 05-01-2013 03:12 PM

I think it goes well with my lip kit.... I thought about a whole mustache delete and fill in with more grill, until I saw what was behind it... LOL Back to the drawing board when I swap out my lip kit for a different set of aero though:thumbup:

to avoid making the car look weak in the front, smaller opening is less agressive, they painted the bumper cover panel black to give it a more open look. Painting it is a bad idea.

i disagree.... painting doesn't look good but a smaller opening if done right will look better and more aggressive imho.

I agree that the smaller opening can have an aggressive look similar to the old monsters of the 90's...

http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...YEvc5ufU7g.jpg

...But at the same time the styling cues of most modern cars follow the same open front style front fascia, and Subaru and Toyota did a good job imo on creating a beautiful car that fits in with today's style while adding a little flare to the mix (The stache). Now while some people may hate it, I actually don't mind it.

the front opening on an FD isn't aggressive. its sexy and subtle, and the reason why my ex-GF and even my wife liked the way it looked. My parent's even gave me props on the rocket of a car based solely on its looks.

The small opening only looks good if its built into the bumper, not a awkward break like the BRZ has.

my case and point, the Genesis, the GT-R, and even the EVO X. All have painted bumper crash beam covers in black, which keep the front opening looking large and in charge.

Sexy and subtle is a good way to put it. I get riled up everytime I see that car. My lack of knowledge on rotary engines kept me away, but I would have loved to owned one of those beauties. Congrats on living out one of my fantasies. :mad0259:
