BRZ/FRS rear diffuser

Hey guys! So, I'm not an engineer or anything, just a self educated hobbyist and diy'er. I hate to see issues on my cars that could be fixed with a few hours and a hundred bucks.

I also hate to see fake or nonfunctional parts on cars. Our "rear diffuser" drives me nuts and in my opinion, it's a critical piece of both performance and visual on a sports car.

Here is my baseplate/prototype/version 1 of my diffuser for my car. I haven't riveted on the vanes for channels yet. The "R" cutout is to clear my Perrin exhaust, the front tabs bolt in the lower bolts on the rear sway bar, this closes nearly the entire open space in the rear bottom bumper and extends about 2 inches past the rear of the car. It doesn't follow the lines of the fake diffuser on the bumper, instead it creates a clean line on the bottom, where the OEM additional "diffuser" bolts on. Putting the exhaust inside of the air free cavity.

I built a similar panel for my 2006 eclipse using the tissue paper "tabs" and a gopro for testing.

It isn't close to finished, I'm doing a wrinkle coat black on the top and I'm planning on a gritted bed liner or flat black on the road side. Might leave it bare aluminum, haven't decided. This one is all built and bent by hand. Once I'm done tweaking, I'll do a nice laser cut one and anodize or powder coat it.

Looks good dude! I'm probably going to do something similar so please post up any hiccups along the way to a finished product!

Wonderbar 04-27-2013 05:04 PM

Once I finish tweaking it, I'll post up the dimensions and a .ppt sketch.

stockysnail 04-28-2013 02:26 AM

Weld some fins on the bottom for better air flow. :)

Wonderbar 04-28-2013 12:26 PM

Too thin to weld, I'll use pop rivets for now.

Why did you remove your reverse/rear fog light assembly?

Tansey86 04-28-2013 01:17 PM

Rear end looks 10x better just without the reverse/rear fog lights. Cant wait to see how this turns out.

I thought it looked terrible and this should help more air moving out of the bumper cavity.

Is the lack of reverse lights a problem during daily use or did you find a way to install it somewhere else on the car?

It's not wired for North American use (I.e. making it useless)

No problems, it's so low Of a mount and so dim, between that on top of window tint and the back glass, you can't see it anyhow. The tails are brighter than the reverse lights.

I'm content with it. I do windows down and side mirrors.

The reverse lights are wired everywhere, the red fog light isn't wired in north america.

Without the reverse lights the car can't pass a safety, so it can't be sold and you *could* be given a ticket for it if the cop wants, but I doubt anyone would be ticketed over it.

I knew that part, plans to wire up an led strip to the factory harness and mount above the mesh.

wparsons 04-29-2013 10:28 PM

I think it would be neat to set up the rear turn signals with switchback bulbs and use them as the reverse lights as well. It would take a bit of moving wires around, and possibly finding a different bulb socket though. I've also been thinking about what it would take to wire my front signals (with switchback bulbs) to be the DRL's.

Wonderbar 04-29-2013 10:34 PM

I would just want the headlight rings lit up with the drls

wparsons 04-29-2013 10:53 PM

^^ With FRS headlights, or BRZ headlights? The FRS DRL's are the highbeam bulb and there is no right around the headlight for us unless you add it on your own.

Wonderbar 04-30-2013 01:19 AM

Well, I have a brz.

Here's the prototype on the car. The coating came out shitty so I just hit it with flat black paint.

I'll take some better pics in the sun tomorrow. Still no air channels, I want to get the base plate right before I add them, they are easier than the main plate.

So, long time no update, but, I am making serious progress today! I hope to be complete on the prototype and showing it off during the Perrin meet this Saturday. Here is a teaser.

Keep in mind, at this stage it is all hand cut, hand measured by yours truly, it's not perfect. I did invest in a 3d rendering program so I can export the specs to a local laser cutting company and have some clean parts for future reproduction.

I am also in cahoots with a very skilled carbon fiber company to potentially make them in a solid cf or cf/aluminum mix.

I may follow your lead and do something similar. I'd be interested in your ppt sketch when you've finished it. We have some sheet metal scrap at work that I could certainly put to good use... I'm just as tempted to make one oout of carbon fiber, but that might take forever.

wootwoot 05-24-2013 07:27 PM

NICE!!! Keep us posted on this thing. I really like it.

Wheelhaus, I am probably going to produce it in a few different ways for purchase. I'm a DIY'er so ill probably make a laser cut kit that people can rivet together themselves.

I have a local carbon fiber shop that does amazing work and uses a pressure mold as opposed to vacuum. Just gonna be a small investment for the tooling.

Last teaser until complete.

 I am very impressed...very fine and functional I assume. It seems similar to TRD one.
A question: can you install and drive without registration on car paper, safety issues? It' road legal in your country? thx

No legality issues here in the states! The only issues I've had with it on is slight scraping on steep driveways and the ass of the car being too sexy.

:mad0260::mad0260::mad0260:Wow! I live in the wrong country.....

Mr. 06-24-2013 12:59 AM

Could you please a post pix of the finished product. I am interested on doing this myself. Thank!

bkblitzed 06-24-2013 10:56 PM

i hate having no experience in metal working :(. I really need to learn this so i can fab some of my own ideas, have any dates of selling for these?

Wonderbar 07-05-2013 08:02 PM

Bump for completed product.

I can't talk about pricing or sales through the forum as I am not a vendor. Working on going national with it but I'm moving to NC this month and it'll take me a little time.

Captain Insano 07-06-2013 01:16 AM

Wow nice job on this. Love it.

2point0 07-06-2013 01:23 PM

Looking good. Would love to see some more long shots with the painted diffuser.

Not that I care all THAT much, but do you have an estimated weight of this thing? (as assembled)

Not yet, I'll put it on the scale tomorrow. It's maybe 3lbs heavier than the plastic oem "diffuser" but I can't say.

2point0 07-07-2013 11:22 AM

Did I see this in a facebook post? Pics of the diffuser and a rivet gun?
