Can anyone fab something like this?

Can anyone make something like this idealy for my 7' nexus tablet? Just a couple ideas, one is just a little tray with a lip coming from underneath the HVAC controls, the other is two brackets on each side, maybe with a rubber line to prevent movement? Out of plastic or fiberglass? I'd probably wrap it in carbon fiber anyways, and I don't want a permanent solution, so I'd probably stick the side brackets with 3M tape, or the tray under the HVAC controls might be able to just be tucked under?

Also wouldn't want the mounts/brackets to interfere with HVAC controls when my tablet is removed.
Thanks!:thanks:

Cool idea!!

SilentAngel 04-25-2013 04:27 PM

That's an awesome idea, been looking around for a mount for my tablet and haven't had anything that works really really well because it always seems to block something, at least this would be for the most part out of the way.

Yaah that was my thought as well, to have a 7" tablet in the windshield isn't a good idea, but normally you dont have to adjust your HVAC controls that often, i got my girlfriend to hold my tablet there and it's not that hard to glance down and take a look at my torque gauges, I just simply don't have the material/equipment to fab something myself, I wish i knew how to fiberglass stuff.

If anyone with good AutoCAD skills or computer design skills wants to make an attempt at using the emachines drsigning program to make the part that would be awesome :)

I use one of these for my phone and just stick it in the vents above the radio. They make a bigger one that would probably work if you just use the pocket under the hvac controls.

Don't think it would stay there too well with some spirited driving, thanks though! :)

I too am looking for a car holder for my Nexus 7 tablet. Going to see if maybe I can fab something.

Any ideas are welcome!

Not sure if you took a look at the link that was posted but that website lets you design parts with their program and then you buy them.. You could give it a try if you're any good with computers :)

Thanks but its tough to design a functional and well fitting part without a prototype. Maybe that's the answer, build a proto then transfer dimensions to CAD.

Yeah, I'd try and do one my self, buy I'm extremely busy at the moment.. If you an that would be awesome :)

I have a lot of experience designing sheet metal parts for production. If you are interested in something, let me know and I can do it. I am not free however since my time is limited. I use ProE for sheet metal CAD work.

I can also have a prototype made locally***

But.. But... These forums are all about helping fellow members out ..

Lol, I'm willing to pay, just not an arm and a leg, do you have a car on site that you can grab measurements from? (I assume yes) would you be able to have fabbed out of plastic or something? I'd really like something like the first idea pic I have, the one with tablet in it (my paint drawing lol). If you can have it made so the little tray/holder for the tablet sits right at the seam of the HVAC controls and the little cubby that would be awesome, I still wanna be able to use my usb/aux, if you have to you can use the little cubby hole to have little supports coming out holding the little tray thats fine, I want a completely reversible solution though. How much are we talking about for R&D here? I'm sure I can make something myself for pretty cheap.

Also maybe I can do a feeler/interest gauger to see if I can get anywhere from 5-20 people who would be interested?

Thanks for your offer of kind assistance :)

This is something I too am interested in doing, I just havn't had the time to start (graduate classes are way too time consuming). I'm an ME and I use CAD (solidworks specifically) daily in my job designing sheetmetal and plastic parts. It may be a few weeks before I can start it, but I can make a CAD model for free. My design will likely be made from fiberglass though as I have the materials on hand and so it would be very cheap for me to make it. Also, I have a Nexus 7, and FRS, so should be able to get something that fits well ;)

iPad or Nexus 7 (I have both)!

Norkoastal 04-26-2013 02:29 PM

I like this idea alot.. I'd find the requested location too low ofor my taste, so I jotted an idea below which may make this more universally appealing to those wanting gauges without a radio swap.

To avoid the "its in the way" scenarios, why not make a slot that runs the height of the " interior walls pictured above" which allows the tablet to be raised to near radio level, then lowered to cover the HVAC when needed? A spring button could "click" and lock the height in so the tablet stays in place once mounted. This mod would require modification to only the "walls" which can be purchased as a seperate part from the knee pads keeping expenses low while also looking factory.

It is all yours since I can't beat that price

SilentAngel 04-26-2013 04:35 PM

lol only problem i may have is getting my tablet in that spot, currently i have a asus infinity tablet which is 10 inches, i have thought about getting a nexus 7 but have not done so, i'll still be following this to see how well it will work with possibly different sized tablets.

Heres a thought ,velcro !
Make a slide in back board with velcro on it ,and also on your TABLET ,
the back board could have a bottom lip and side wings .
a pair of "c" channel strips say 6mm wide .
So when finnished could just side unit out and only be left with only the "c" channell strips.
If you want i can draw up what am thinking in solid works ,

Hi
I knocked this up ,you get the idea ,velcro in the middle ,or clamp the tablet in place ,i would angle it back say 5* make it easy to see.and wouldn`t come out easy .

jack 04-29-2013 10:16 AM

hi have a look at the drawing i posted ,you could use some stand ups and make another plate come up and forward more ,that way it would side wings .just hold your tablet ,ipad ect up against that area ,and as long you can still shift gears .all good ,message me and i will draw it for you ,so you get the idea ,$10 bucks in parts should be enought to make it .

So the tablet would be velvro'ed to the back plate? The back of the nexus 7 isnt flat :(. Would you be able to fab that? Cause I don't think I can lol

Here is a quick model I made that can be made out of sheetmetal (aluminum would be best to keep it lightweight).

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/9...carmount01.png

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/1...carmount02.png

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/5...carmount03.png

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/2...carmount04.png

I need to get some foam to get more accurate dimensions, but this is the general idea. I would paint it (probably black) and add rubber to sides to prevent scratching of the car interior, as well as rubber to the two flanges that hold the top of the nexus 7 in place.

Let me know your thoughts and I can go a different direction if you want.

Cheers

I totally missed this, I like the idea and if fitment was good I'd use it, to prevent scratching i was thinking maybe spraying the sheet metal with a coat of plasti dip,

Sorry I never replied to this but if you can make it happen, it would be awesome!

Cesium Rainbow 07-31-2013 08:46 PM

I missed this the first time around too, pretty dope concept. If it wasnt too pricey it might give me a reason to actually get a tab. If anybody's thinking about seriously making something like this, just make sure the climate control cutout is shaped to provide access for both center console types and include a slot or something for the push button start so Subaru and Toyota owners aren't excluded.

3 things:
1: isnt that angle abit low to get a good view of the screen?
2: wouldnt the shifter get in the way of tapping or viewing?
3: what is the purpose of the tablet? if movies, wouldnt the first two things be a big issue? and wouldnt sound quality be pretty bad unless you plan to route it through the car speakers somehow

The viewing angle isn't too low, it's a little out of sight but nothing serious, for myself anyways, but I'm not a tall guy.

The shifter should stay clear of the tablet by quite a bit, There is quite a bit of room there.

Personally myself, the tablet is for Torque, just to monitor some readings on my car, and possibly for gps depending how hard it is to see. I have no intentions of using it to play audio or movies.
