I came down to guide @firestormriot through his catback install [found here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34386]. He ordered one of the replica diffusers so we decided to put it on while the car was in the air. It was exciting as he is starting to mod his car, and always fun to be working on them. Enjoy

Here is a quick look and dirty DIY guide.

Everything in all it's glory. One page, some hardware, and the diffuser itself. Very simple

Manual.

The diffuser was a smooth plastic. I'm unsure if the OEM diffuser has the same texture as the rear bumper. It has a matte plastic finish

It seems to actually be several parts held together with flower rivets. I didn't look at the manual. We assumed all the holes were mounting points

This hook goes over the rear bumper. On the outside is another hole for another mounting point

Sorry I didn't get a close picture of the supports. They can be seen later; I will point this out

More pictures and thoughts

I looked at the Ebay diffuser that @Chris@Phastek purchased. I will say it is different than this one. I'll let @firestormriot post the ebay link for people who are interested

We wanted to minimize drilling, so test fitted with no drilling. The middle can be easily pushed down so we decided to drill the bumper for that middle mount point.

However, the fitment for the sides aren't great. There is about a 1/2-3/4" gap between the diffuser and bumper. Pushing up doesn't close the gap. We didn't want to stress anything so we left it alone. Despite this the diffuser is holding on very well.

I am certain like the OEM diffuser, this is not a functional piece. It is purely just for looks.

@firestormriot has the Zeta Performance Catback exhaust on. He told me his tips were 4.5" in diameter. They fill the hole made by the diffuser and bumper cutouts well.

Overall this product does the job: Gives the OEM look at 1/8th the cost.

Great writeup I'm gonna buy one soon

It does complete the look. I'm not sure if the one on ebay is the one that night0 is selling. From pictures off of his posts they look like the fitment is better. price is almost the same too. If anyone can give a closeup pic to the one @night0 is seller that would be great!

I have to install mine asap! it is sitting in my house now!

bpracer 04-24-2013 09:04 PM

Your hardware kit looks much better than the stuff that came with my knock-off kit.

Draco_PR23 04-24-2013 09:31 PM

^Agree, the hardware is different from my knock-off diffuser.
@F1point4 The sides of the diffuser are basically hanging? I'm asking because I installed mine last Saturday and my kit came with a bracket that is attached to the bumper and diffuser to give support. I dont see those brackets in the hardware picture.

BTW, great writeup

F1point4 04-24-2013 09:42 PM

The edges slide into place so it isn't quite hanging free

Aside from the brass nuts and bolts, they came with three side on clips with tapped holes for screws. We didn't use those. However we couldn't push the diffuser to mate with the bumper so it was moot

i just installed a rubber spacer to fill the gap and used the clip and a longer screw to secure it to the bumper. It's pretty much invisible until you get really close and i prefer it to the gap.

SportInjected 04-25-2013 12:05 AM

Mind posting the ebay link for the diffuser, @firestormriot?

sharris721 04-25-2013 01:09 AM

I got the same one, I think... It was only $98.xx. I didn't drill anything I just fastened it with the plastic clips and 4 of the screws. I tugged on it pretty hard, its not gonna come off. As far as install time it took me longer to jack up the car on stands.

Sure, its this one :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-Subaru-...2bfa4a&vxp=mtr

There are multiple others that are the same price. There is even one from one of the vendors on here but its $98.87 on eBay.

jack 04-25-2013 09:57 AM

hi all ,i got one of these as well ,and some carbon fiber weave .next months project

Turbowned 07-15-2013 07:54 PM

@F1point4, Did you re-install those little bumper supports? I stared un-doing stuff and didn't really see where they came off of, or how to put them back on...

SubaSteve 07-16-2013 01:34 AM

70 bucks plus free shipping for the same part firestorm got. I'm going to have to say can't beat that deal. I really wanted the rear diffuser not really interested in a front one seeing as I have a cbs and it doesn't look right on black.

Dustin2JZ 07-20-2013 04:52 PM

has anyone seen this one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281130422271...84.m1438.l2649

jybrd 07-21-2013 09:04 PM

The gaps on the far left and right are tightened up with the provided slip on metal sleeve. It provides you a place to screw tight to the bumper.

Looks nice man. Good Work!

FRS_Ken 08-11-2013 12:07 AM

I installed mine today - I only drilled three holes one in the center V and one on each end
Everything else lined up with factory holes
Looks great and it lines up with my Rexspeed CF Side skirts :)

hanabie 08-11-2013 03:58 AM

I did not drill any holes, just mounted it with 6 bolts and nuts. I am pretty sure those were sufficient to hold the diffuser

I had one installed a few weeks ago. Before I went on eBay and found a similar one at the same price, my parts guy at the Subaru dealership was quoting it for.. $636!
He couldn't believe it after he saw it installed how much I had paid for it.

One of the best cosmetic mods for the price if you ask me. I always felt something was missing when looking at the car from back...

ddk168 01-11-2014 12:46 AM

Thanks so much for the guide, but I"m just wondering if you did anything with those clips (part "B")? I bought a similar one with similar instructions, but instead of those clips I have different ones. I'll attach a copy of the instructions that I was given and the clips, but from the diagrams I have no idea how to attach them, can someone can give me some tips?

Instructions:

Here's what it looks like atm, to be honest it does seem stable enough, but the sides does seem like it'll come lose if you press it down.

Also here's a link to the seller on ebay for anyone in Australia who might be interested in one with the same bumper like texture rather than a smooth plastic. (Not sure how much international shipping is)

Do once you take out those 2 bumper supports .... do you put them back in or? cause i just bought mine and i'm pretty much a noob to car mods .. and thought this one was pretty simple to do.

Mine is the same - I hand screwed the bracket into the black bumper plastic where it meets the body-coloured bumper.
You need to figure out where to put the screws in (I messed that up on one side, so it is not as solid as the other) - basically, the leading edge of the clip (the side with only one small hole) will line up with the part of your underbody where the bumper colours (black and body colour) meet.
The small part of the bracket (like the hook of a "J") is what is screwed tight to your bumper (your screwdriver or drill bit will go through the big hole).

Once the bracket is solidly attached, you attach the diffuser by way of the other metal screw (the 4 gold coloured ones), screwing it into the single small hole.

Getting this positioning perfect is kinda tough (especially the angles you'll be working at), so I suggest taking your time and making sure it's a good fit before you actually screw it in.

Hope that sort of helps

Here's what mine looks like.
Basically, each clip uses 2 screws:

Image 1 & 2:
The first screw holds the clip on your bumper (you can use a screwdriver to drive it in, but be careful of the placement), and passes the big hole through to the small hole (which is the side that will actually hold the clip to the bumper)

In the first 2 pics, you can see the back of the clip (which faces the rear of the car), where it is screwed into the soft black plastic of the rear bumper.

Attachment 76134
Attachment 76135

Image 3
The second screw is put in after you pull the diffuser edge over the long end of the clip (the diffuser tip has a little ridge that should slide right over the bracket/clip)

Attachment 76136

Image 4 & 5
These 2 pics give you and idea of the locations of the 2 screws

It should look something like this (pardon the crappy MS paint):
