Front License Plate Solution?

So here in the state of Illinois it is required to have license plates at the front and rear end of the car. This is obviously a nice looking car and I don't wanna drill holes in it when I get it (I'm sure there are others out there that agree). My idea is to get this retractable one:

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...seplate009.jpg

Not quite sure this is the most legal or aesthetically pleasing way. Anyone have any other solutions?

7thgear 01-26-2012 01:19 PM

rebels around my parts like to throw their plates up on the dashboard and deal with cops from time to time

i really hate the front plate law :(

ichitaka05 01-26-2012 01:34 PM

For my state, it's only require front, so not gonna worry, but I thought they already have a holes for license already... cuz I remember UK ver had license plate

WingsofWar 01-26-2012 01:42 PM

placing a licence plate in your dashboard is bad juju. Essentially you have put a flying guillotine in your car that activates at even the smallest of accidents. Iv seen some bad injuries from license plates on dashboards.

There are some bracket solutions for people who have to run a front license plate. Many laws do not say anything about the angle in which it is viewed. So If your clever enough you can use a license plate angle for aerodynamic aid.

That's be totally awesome. "My front air dam is a license plate!"

Its required here in jersey. I just dont put mine on and i never have a problem. I have 5% tint all around too and they never say anything.

Snoopyalien24 01-26-2012 03:13 PM

I don't have to worry...

"Why?", you ask

Simple solution,

Break your license plate then put it under your seat. get pulled over for no plate: "but officer, its broken, see?"

And get tasered by the officer as you are reaching under your seat.

You guys ONLY require front in UT? Or do you mean you require front in addition to rear?

#87 01-26-2012 03:21 PM

The factory mounts should drill holes in the potion of bumper that is parallel to the ground, a place where you would not see them unless you were on the ground looking up. The problem seems to be the oil change monkeys in the dealership shop don't know what they are doing and don't follow the instructions for mounting and just drill into the front of the bumper.

I suggest you ask the dealer not to mount the front plate and to give you the bracket so you can check how to properly mount it without damaging your brand new car.

I wouldn't use the one in the picture above unless you mount it in the middle of the bumper. That is just asking to lose your plate on a speed bumper or driveway, or even a bad pothole if you are slammed.

I saw this happen at a Nissan Dealer with a row of brand new 350z. A friend of mine pointed it out to me, then to the manager, he scurried off. I didn't get it at the time. Suddenly we heard screaming and yelling in the back.

License plate mounting is serious business!

Yeah, I meant rear, not front

Mr.Jay 01-26-2012 03:55 PM

I was thinkig about making a bracket and side mounting it but lets wait and do things one at a time lol need the car 1st

Argent6978 01-26-2012 07:47 PM

I think I'm going to look at a way to mount my front license plate inside the front grille somehow, that way it doesn't ruin the look of my front bumper.... assuming I can get the dealership to not put on the front bracket for me.... I'm sure they could do that...

3scapist 01-27-2012 12:41 AM

Just move to FL :p

_hollywood 01-27-2012 12:57 AM

When i was stationed in VA i just kept my WI tags.....no smog, no bullshit inspections, no front plate....even though its required in WI. I had zero problems for 6 years, the cops didnt want to deal with it...if i ever live in a state that requires it i will just keep my WI tags, even if it takes some work...

Plates ruin the front end of a car, imo

jedichimp 01-27-2012 03:29 AM

I've seen some attach it to the passenger visor, works. Depends where you are. I'm in CA and don't get hassled without a front plate. There are cheap solutions. I think it was 808customs that had one and another company. Few bolts and washers and just attaches to a grill, no holes. Or the PTuning idea that uses the tow hook. I used that one for a while.

WHERE TO GET.

poormans_LFA 01-27-2012 04:06 AM

have we started a thread on where people want to mount their plates??

DommerEOD 01-27-2012 11:36 AM

For CA folks:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5200.htm

5200. (a) When two license plates are issued by the department for use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.

Doesn't say jack about "forward facing".

Doin it.. under the bumper.

I would love that, as someone with several improperly displayed front plate violations, nothing would make me happier than to see the officers face when he walks around the car only to see a plate that wasn't there moments before...

Anyone know of other ways of putting your plate in the front? I don't want it int he car since... it might fly at me (Thanks Josh. That image scared me).

3scapist 01-27-2012 03:42 PM

Better check your local laws before you get one of those license plate flipper thingies. Here in FL, any device that conceals your plate is grounds for a expensive ticket. I never see cars with them but over here, it's a big thing in the motorcycle community.

My boy has one of these for his A5 though.

The motorized one was the one I originally thought I posted a picture of, haha. If you want a non-motorized one, you could possibly head out to your local hardware store and craft one.

I like the motorized one, makes it feel like a bit of a transformer.

That would work if the grill was cut out.

I was thinking more of the motorized similar to what the OP posted work but even at the bottom of the chin spoiler it will be illegal since it's too low. I don't plan to mount it and just zip tie to the grill for the time being.

I thought of that, but I remember I saw something with Keiichi Tsuchiya and him other drivers performed a test with and without license plates. It was found that the oil temp increased and performance suffered. Something motorized that could be mounted like that supra would be nice if possible.

I'm not really sure on the dimensions for the bumper. I just figured that the video I posted gave a cleaner look to the car when it's in park or for a show. I feel the one you posted would get knocked out or become dysfunctional later on since its more exposed at the bottom of the car.

marinjim 04-28-2012 05:06 PM

For those in NorCal watch out for San Francisco, got tagged (while parked) last night for $105 as I've never had a front plate on my Lexus SC300. Only one other time was a fixit tic. Going to see if I can get this reduced. Seems SF has a giant budget shortfall and this is an easy way to raise $$$$.

Need a plan for the FR-S as I won't want to put up with this on my new baby and WILL NOT let them drill the bumper. Told the dealer I'd turn around and walk out if they drill.

kanundrum 04-29-2012 02:59 AM

I told my dealership to not drill and they said they will see what they can do...

I will see where I can not buy the CAR!!! Stupid answer

track_warrior 04-29-2012 03:11 AM

LOL texas requires a front plate ive ran no front plate for the 3 years that i have lived here and no probs so far. I dont even carry the other one in the car.

I also told my dealer not to drill i told them if they drilled i would not pay for the car.
