question for guys with headers

How did your car feel after you installed it with a ecu reset? Mines feel sluggish, i definitely need a tune. Do you guys think you need a tune after your header install?

It always feels sluggish with a lousy throttle response after a reset.
It's self learning and I wonder if it might be better to leave it alone?

I will talk about my brief spin in @Concept 3 LED FRS, but that torque dip is all but gone, just barely noticeable.. And honestly felt like a whole new car, with a whole new sound.. It just pulls so much harder.. But I tagged him so he could give his impression

How long has it been since you did your headers?
After I installed my CAI , I reset the ECU and it was "sluggish" for about 5-10 minutes .. Haven't had it happen after that

finally installed it today. Drove it for about 5 miles with the reset ecu, i am just asking for your opinion. I am sure the ecu will adjust to it soon.

Trust me, you need a recalibration with the header. We have seen several cases where the header/cai combo are causing a over lean bog due to over scavenging. Tuning is cheap, why chance it ?

Opposed 04-19-2013 10:36 AM

What kind of header are we talking about?

Xdragonxb0i 04-19-2013 11:39 AM

P&L headers.
@dynoyronics. I was hoping I could run my car without a tune for a few months to save up. Right now. My car isn't enjoyable

Clipdat 04-19-2013 11:55 AM

The pedal delay goes away after ~100 miles.

Depends on which header you get. PPE Header has an angle extension for 2nd O2 sensor so it can run fine on stock tune. Improved with Visconti tune.

I got the EL headers from FA20club.. they're pretty similar. You'll definitely need a tune. I wouldn't have even thought about getting the CAI & headers if I couldn't tune it that same week. Like @Dynotronics1 said, you don't want to risK running too lean.. that goes with any mods, but header are much more drastic a change IMO than other bolt-ons, in terms of power gains and potential AFR fluctuations.

To be honest, you may actually lose a bit of torque down low just from the loss of backpressure in the exhaust system by putting on headers.. A tune will definitely help compensate, but I actually don't feel too much of an improvement (if any) below 3K rpms.. which is OK actually, since I gained so much more pull above 3K.

Our Firestorm car has been running without a tune for several hundred miles and an open track day with no issues. I sure wasn't easy on the car for the track day either ;) Mods include AEM intake, HKS EL header, Perrin over-pipe, Invidia catted front-pipe, and T1R cat-back.

I will be interested to see the logs on the stock tune. We have tunes waiting for it, but just have not had the time for it. Also, kind of want to see what kind of numbers we are putting down with the stock flash.

Just my .02, I suppose.

Cheers!

Totally agree! In fact, I'm inclined to say the DIP is now "upside down". :D

yup, the cam timing for sure needs to be changed around the dip rpm range.. and with that fuel and timing as well, and while your at it you may as well tweak the rest of the rpm range to account for the reduced back pressure and improved flow as well.....

or you could just rock the stock tune and not make more than a few hp with your new header i suppose :slap:

How do you find it volume-wise with that exhaust set-up? I'm really interested in the T1R exhaust but plan to go to a header at some point and don't want it to end up TOO loud.

I've also been running headers for several thousand miles, track days, etc. without a tune.

Lets not flood the forum with bad info- you don't need a tune with headers. At least, not all.

while a tune may not be required, you will not be getting the most out of your header without one.

If you don't need a tune, then your headers aren't doing much!

I've got the dyno numbers that say different. :) I'd love to see them with a tune as well though, some day. Track time is more important right now for me.

I just want to make sure people know that you don't "need" a tune with headers. My AFR looks good, and the headers were designed to be fine on stock tune, and it pulls nice and hard (and these were the first dyno proven headers on the forums, I might add).

No doubt you have before and after dyno runs taken on the same dyno, same day?

different days. Same exact temp and humidity though, with 6+ runs both before and after. And re-verified at yet another dyno facility operated by a 3rd party (which was all within 2hp, same kind of dyno). Check out the nameless header thread for the deets. It's all been beaten to death over there with dyno plots, pics, drive impression vids, it goes on. No need to hijack this thread to challenge someone ;)

I see you have one of the early prototype nameless headers... no offense but those do not flow as well as the newer 4-1 long tube designs or the yet to be released nameless 4-2-1 long tube (which i am on the waiting list for). For those I believe you are correct that you don't NEED a tune because they did not change the flow / back pressure characteristics as much as the newer long tube 4-1 or 4-2-1 designs.

I still think you would notice a nice difference with a custom tune though because the stock cam timing is the way it is to work around the limitations of the stock header in the dip region.

So, to revise my opinion :) headers that don't flow much better than stock probably won't benefit from, or change afrs enough to warrant a custom tune.

These are equal length with 30-40% more volume (just looking at primary sizes by themselves). They flow significantly better, as evidence by the +29whp at the top end. No offense taken, just trying to clear up info- you *can* run headers without a tune. Are you leaving power on the table? yes. but it's not unsafe for the vehicle. Do the newer long tube designs flow better? Yeah. not saying that :)
