Side by side cosmetic differences between BRZ and FRS/86 (same dimension lights)

The actual lens/lamp assembly are the same dimensions as confirmed from my source. The front bumper on the BRZ covers the headlight assembly a bit more, making the eyes look a bit shorter across, and the orange marker light inside seems to be reflected or positioned differently. The front facing turn signals are mounted inside the BRZ headlamp assembly, while the FRS/86 has them outside in the corner of the bumper, above the fog lamps.

The front bumper area also has conservative look on the BRZ, while the FRS/86 has a bit more aggressive and aerodynamically conscious shape with pronounced vertical crease line. The grill of the Subaru is reminiscent of the Impreza with simple low count of thick horizontal bars. The Toyota FRS/86 has the all-new T-logo pattern, which is also used in the meter cluster and center console panel inside the interior.

The rear is almost identical aside from the optional deck wing on the Subaru.
Of course the dimensional difference you see in various lines are from convergence difference in the lenses used to take the two photos.

--Photos from GazooResponse website.
Also at least on released catalog specs at Tokyo show, the BRZ is 10mm taller, probably from the difference in gas charged valving/spring-rates of the suspension.

More obvious is the side garnish atop the trailing front fender, where Toyota/Scion chose to badge with "86 Boxer" emblem (optionally with other garnish choices) the, Subaru BRZ has a simple faux grill...which can be rather cool as well. (I assume these are interchangeable... fun, no?)

Also the cutoff points for the hood line and front fenders, as well as the dimensions and shape of the headlight assembly shell are identical, so that the two cars can share a single aftermarket bumper or even swap between Subaru/Scion/Toyota according to preference. (more fun facts!)

JDLM 12-21-2011 11:27 PM

I am glad I guessed the lamps being the same ...good news

Jordo! 12-21-2011 11:27 PM

Everything looks pretty interchangeable.

It has to be ..1 factory needed the configurations to be pretty straight forward...

So 1st person w/ FR-S and BRZ headlamps :D

Snoopyalien24 12-21-2011 11:36 PM

Sweet. BRZ headlights here I come. Thanks for your info Moto-P! We appreciate it :D

Moto-P 12-21-2011 11:38 PM

I guess Toyota learned a thing or two while making the AE86 as USA Corolla GTS, Japanese Corolla Levin, Sprinter Trueno, and European Corolla GT all in the same line... LOL! That must have been a scramble for random parts every few hundred cars as the shapes changed! I mean more than half of them equipped with retractable headlights!!

Moto-P 12-21-2011 11:40 PM

I think I'm gonna get BRZ headlight assembly on my FRS so I can have FOUR front turn signal lamps!! (joke!!)

I've been waiting for someone not as lazy as me to do this! Thanks!

(Angles are a bit confusing but close enough!)

Any side shots? I know the side should be the same, but more for bumper comparison of the side view.

ahausheer 12-22-2011 12:44 AM

If true, the variance in ride height is interesting. Also, I believe there is a different muffler or exhaust for N.America. The N. America versions will have 3 more HP.

Jokerz 12-22-2011 12:49 AM

I still can't seem to figure out which one I like more! Tho I think I'm leaning slightly more towards FR-S since it seems to fit me a little bit better, kinda aggressive but not over the top imo. Good to know a lot of the parts will be interchangeable tho

Repyt 12-22-2011 01:05 AM

Other differences on the exterior would be the lack of a spoiler on the FRS while I haven't seen the BRZ captured without one yet. The actual fog lights in the bumpers do seem to be the same (physical size), however the ones in the BRZ are encased in plastic so who knows if they will actually fit into the FRS bumper (mounting points anyway). Mufflers seem to be somewhat different in those pictures with the FRS looking overall a tiny bit smaller (this may be due to camera angle/lighting).

Dark 12-22-2011 03:26 AM

Headlight interchangeable? Every other part also seems interchangeable. Subieyota BRS, Here I come.

Mr.Jay 12-22-2011 03:31 AM

Moto you made my day with these tibits of info thxs

BRZ headlight

TheRoadWarrior 12-22-2011 05:28 AM

I think the ride height difference is due to the inclusion of the antenna base in the BRZ measurement where as on the 86 they don't count it.

Regarding the rear spoiler I think it could be available on the 86 as well, I'm sure one of the motorshow or early press images showed it. (Can't stand it personally! Duckbill FTW)

sirus 12-22-2011 07:01 AM

I'm +1 for an 86 with BRZ headlights
Looks like this will be a popular swap/conversion :)

70NYD 12-22-2011 08:05 AM

Like I said what, year and a half ago? Badge engineering, most be the same. I was wrong tho, I thought they would have different shaped lights at least, if only slightly

This is pretty close to badge engineering where they both sat down and did what they wanted to their cars within the confines of the given "body/chassis/Interior" so they can make it their own. There isn't anything wrong with that.

I don't see a point to different headlamp (sizes/shapes) for the 2 companies that would require work and supply issues I am sure they didn't want to deal with.

Koji_Online 12-22-2011 08:47 AM

Good post

JDLM 12-22-2011 08:49 AM

Yeah this isn't a "hey lets be that guy to drag another model down thread"

It was a simple side by side post

True that; agree

Ryephile 12-22-2011 09:19 AM

Thanks Moto-P for the side-by side visual comparison. :)

Let me see if I have this right:

Exterior Differences:
*Headlight guts [same exterior dims and mounting points
*front bumper cover [adds turn signals for FR-S, black plastic mustache on BRZ]
*front fender vent garnish
*emblems [front, rear, name badge, wheel caps]
*Trunk spoiler [optional anyway?]

Interior Differences:
*Dash trim [silver vs. faux CF]
*steering wheel badge
*gauge cluster bezel [all black BRZ, silver/white tach on FR-S]
*Upholstery [black cloth w/red shoulder patches FR-S, cloth/leather all black BRZ, both with red stitching]
*Auto HVAC, push-button start, optional heated seats, audio head-unit

Don't forget the color choices, doesn't subaru offer different colors?

We were thinking naming convention (same color) w/ some special to the brand

griso 12-22-2011 11:12 AM

I think that Blue could be different....

The white definitely looks different in the pics I have seen... plus FR-S black seems to have a lot of metallic in it vs BRZ black.

Dragonitti 12-22-2011 11:34 AM

I reckon I will have a BRZ headlight equipped FR-S.

tranzformer 12-22-2011 11:37 AM

Subaru so smart, design the better looking headlight and all the Scion guys will pay to get them. Genius. Car engineered and built by Subaru and now lighted by Subaru.

If I end up getting the BRZ in the US any lhd GT86 people want to ship/swap front bumpers and HID's?

A little horse before the cart don't you think?

merlin2111 12-22-2011 11:49 AM

So I guess my overall decision will be based around interior and price. I hate swapping gauge clusters and redoing wiring but bumpers and headlights are a breeze especially if the paints match up.

I don't even want to imagine what the cost of shipping a bumper would be from Europe/Japan/Australia.
