Moving in neutral....Engine turns off?

So this has been happening since I can remember every once and a while but the other day it happened twice in 2 minutes

Basically at 40mph I popped the car into neutral and all of a sudden the engine turned off and rpm dropped. A bunch of lights showed up like the TAC sweep lights ( tracation control, battery light, oil light, ABS light, engine light and the steering wheel light) so while i was moving in neutral I started the car again. Then another minute later I come to a complete stop and put the car in neutral again and the car turns off...it kind of concerns me that this has happened multiple times and I have no idea what it may be? Anyone experiencing similar issues?

Guff 04-14-2013 05:58 AM

New start/stop feature?

I'm not sure what it is, but you should def. get it checked out by the dealer, sounds like a bad problem. It def. shouldn't be doing that from just going in Neutral.

Steve 04-14-2013 10:22 AM

Are you leaving it in neutral at 40mph and coasting?

strat61caster 04-14-2013 12:24 PM

Manual or Automatic?

CircuitJerk 04-14-2013 01:16 PM

Intake modifications?

Yea i pop it into neutral to coast for a second or even when im slowing down from 5th gear to a stop, before the rpm drops low I just pop it into neutral

I have an injen intake

Sounds like an ECU issue, take it into the dealer and if they're stumped I would ask for a reflash.

The car isn't holding idle rpm's, that's a problem on a brand new computer controlled car, warranty should take care of it. This is assuming the only mod is the intake of course.

I have seen this happen on a BRZ with an Injen intake.

Suggest you re-install the stock intake and try to reproduce the issue.

Rayme 04-15-2013 06:57 PM

That injen sure is some trouble from what I read on here.

Bonburner 04-15-2013 07:06 PM

Get to dealers asap imo.

CircuitJerk 04-15-2013 07:07 PM

My suggestion would be to reset the ECU by removing the negative cable from the battery and then go over your Injen installation thoroughly. Once you've checked your installation, and you're confident everything is in place and there's nothing unusual, press your horn, turn on your headlights to purge any remaining power from the electronics, wait 5 minutes or so and then reconnect your battery.
If the problem persists try putting the stock intake back on and see if you can duplicate the issue like @deucethemoose suggested.

FRSPirate 04-15-2013 07:10 PM

I wouldn't take it to the dealer until you made sure it's not the intake. I can almost bet it is; the same thing use to happen on my Z and it was pop charger related.

Juurian 04-15-2013 09:28 PM

i have an injen intake as well this has happened to me once but after the ecu relearned itself i havent had an issue, guess i got lucky.

firl21 04-15-2013 09:40 PM

IS the injun a short ram or CAI?
Im going to turbo/supercharge my car and i need to know what intakes i need to stay away from

stay away from all intake until what kit you want.

lots of kits comes with intake but some uses stock airbox like avo.

So wait until you know what you want, because you probably don't need to buy an intake

Update?

King Tut 04-22-2013 12:32 PM

It is the intake 100%. This is a very common issue on cars with MAF sensors close to the filter on aftermarket intakes. Either get an Injen intake EcuTek tune or take the intake off.

CaptainSlow 04-22-2013 11:38 PM

I agree it's the intake (I've had similar problems in the past with other cars where the RPMs drop faster than the ECU can account for, and it just stalls out)...although I'm having a hard time visualizing what is going on that would make that happen (physically in the system).

King Tut 04-23-2013 12:31 PM

It is the tumbling of the air from the pod filter (Aussie term). The ways to fix it are a different pod filter, an air straightener, moving the MAF sensor to a locaiton with straighter air, or adjusting the tune to compensate. This was an issue on E46 M3 as well.

This. Sucks soo much. I have an Injen as well and had the same exact problem even after reflashing the ECU. Will have to get it tuned.

naikaidriver 04-23-2013 03:52 PM

This is a common problem with the following intakes;
- AirRaid
- Injen
- HKS

I also have the Injen and it has happened to me as well. More often now that the weather is warming up.

I would strongly recommend re-installing your stock intake until you can get a tune. EcuTek and Unichip both have tunes that will fix this and your car will run properly with those intakes. No need to sell them, they are perfectly fine. Just be aware.

I'm taking mine off tonight and storing it until I get my tune.

Just throwing this out there, it seems most aftermarket intakes remove fins that are inside the stock airbox just before the MAF sensor. Why they remove it? Not sure. Why the stock airbox has it? Probably because it makes the reading more stable.

norsamerican 04-23-2013 04:09 PM

any issues with the Perring intak causing this problem?
