EFR series
So ive been reading up on options for my summer build and ive read so much hype on the 6758, 7064. and 7163 efr series of BW turbos and I am wondering why we dont see them used on our car outside of Powerhouse amuse. I keep reading that they are miles ahead of the gt28 gt30?

Treadstone is using a EFR turbo and so is Crawford.

JDL should drive down the street and pick one up from Full race and throw it on their kit to see the diff between those and the 5130 they used......

As pointed out above, Availability is slim, castings are inconsistent to the point they had to move away from some of the original technology and finish quality due to rampant failures, the exhaust turbines have had a problem staying together aswell, none of these are HUGE issues affecting everyone who buys an EFR.
There is enough negative media out there and not enough positive to get the turbos a real chance to shine, I believe overall they are awesome turbos, but I wouldn't design a kit around them because of little to no interchange with other readily available turbos (as far as packaging) limiting customers overall choices, and not wanting to be committed to waiting on a product with such a varied/unreliable delivery schedule. |
There's a company out here that i think is planning on making a kit utilizing the EFR but that's really only speculation at this point. The drawback to the EFR is the size to power ratio. EFR's are huge, heavy, and looking at their site down on power to Garrett's and Precision Turbos. They are a neat idea that makes quite a bit of sense, but like has been said, they restrict your choices if you decide you want to go bigger.

It may be a DIY dream setup, but the EFR is overly complicated and prone to breaking. I'd also be surprised if the weight savings gained by having everything in one unit would be that much. I have held a smaller EFR unit and then my PT 5558 and the 5558 was substantially lighter...my Tial wastegate and BOV are also pretty light so I dunno how much it would really save.

They're great, but I prefer separate, discreet components. Do they make an externally gated version?

Lots of turbochargers have built in re-circ/anti-surge valves, including Garrett. Never heard of them being a common problem. I wouldn't really call bolting the boost control solenoid to the compressor housing as particularly integrated.
On paper the EFR series looks awesome. |

It is easy to see the EFR spools much faster and delivers a more usable and faster responding powerband." Of course this is at a fairly high PSI and Full-race is one of BWs biggest partners, they beta tested for them and everything so they are pretty bias. I believe this is the turbo that kmbkk is using. |
Yes, I'm running the 6258 turbo. I can't post dyno runs yet as I'm still testing it. Once the kit is completed and final tuning is done I'll do a full write up of the kit.

This means that these two plots are either: not the same car, or were done in different gears; either way, it seems kind of useless for spool/powerband comparisons. |

Are you on drugs? The graph clearly details when two different turbochargers spool and reach their desired boost level.

No it does not, because the graphs are not overlaid evenly. See where each HP/TQ lines intersect??? Thats 5252rpm. Notice that the two sets of curves intersect at completely different speeds?? Again, there are only two explanations for this: pulls were in different gears, or two completely different cars.

I wish they would have simply overlaid the two graphs using conventional HP/TQ with a separate graph showing boost. I'd look less like an idiot right now. Oh well. Haha. |
No worries! I posted this to have a discussion and talk about options! Really wish these were more plug and play. Id be nice to throw this series on the FBM kit and compare and contrast against the gt28/gtx28 series.

Once kmbkk gets his car up and running we can compare his spool up to the spool up of my FBM kit. I want to get a ride in his, and then we can go for a drive in mine.
