DIY: Prova Front Fender Emblems
http://content.rallysportdirect.com/forums/forums.jpg I have wanted to install these for a while, well pretty much the first time I saw them, I knew they would be on our car. Before I got started, I laid the kit out to make sure we had everything and that it was in good condition. Everything looked perfect, so we started the install! http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0220-L.jpg The side vents come off very easily, you essentially just grab and pull, but there is some double sided sticky tape towards the rear, and 6 clips along the whole vent. I found by pushing the 2 front most clips out from behind the fender allowed me to grab the vent and easily remove it. But you could easily start with the rear of the vent as well. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0213-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0214-L.jpg Once the old vent is off, you will want to make sure to remove the sticky tape that is left over from the old vent on the fender. Goo gone seems to work pretty well for this, or just go old fashioned elbow grease will do the trick in a pinch as well. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0230-L.jpg Prep the new vent and fender by using the supplied alcohol wipe to clean all of the dirt and grease off the new vents and the fender. Make sure to do a couple of passes, as you would be surprised how dirty the parts are. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0234-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0236-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0237-L.jpg Now use the supplied tape to go around the edge of the Prova vent, they tell you exactly where this needs to go in the included instructions. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0239-L.jpg Once you have the tape on, you can secure it to the fender, just make sure to line it up along the door frame to everything sits flush. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0249-L.jpg Once placed in the fender you can secure the 2 nuts to the backside of the new vent. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0243-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0244-L.jpg The upper front bolt is easy to get to from the engine bay, but the rear most lower bolt will require you to remove the inner fender liner, or if you are small like myself, you can get away with not removing the whole liner, but it was a tight squeeze. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0256-L.jpg Nut you can access from the engine bay: http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0246-L.jpg One will require access from the lower fender: http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0251-L.jpg According to the instructions, the torque on these is 1 kg/m, if my math is correct that should be 7 ft/lbs, so they do not require much force. Once the new vent is in place and secure, use the alcohol wipes to clean the recession for the Prova emblem. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0266-L.jpg Carefully remove the backing on the emblem, and carefully put them in place. http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...IMG_0270-L.jpg I found using the upper line to be the most helpful in getting these straight and even. Repeat the process for the other side, and enjoy your new side vents! http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...955media-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...971media-L.jpg http://rallysportdirect.smugmug.com/...917media-L.jpg I must say, I LOVE these vents! It is a very nice but subtle addition to the car, much like the JDM side markers, where it really adds to the overall feel and look to the car, but you just can't quite put your finger on what is different. Well unless you are a JDM junkie, then you could spot them from a mile away. The install was pretty easy, and they fit like OEM. Plus they just look gorgeous on the car! :) For more information on the Prova Side Emblems Click Here http://www.rallysportdirect.com/cata...a037j_3_sd.jpghttp://www.rallysportdirect.com/cata...a002c_2_sd.jpg Thanks, Rick |
they look very much like the brz vents, but with metal instead of plastic
|
Wow, I really liked the looks of these, until I clicked the link and saw the price...
Still waiting on some side vents that reflect reality in pricing.... |

little confused - the packaging and first couple shots show a chrome like grill in the back, but the final shot shows all white?

Love the look of these. I want to see what these look like on WRB before I jump on them though.

Any possibility of a group buy? :D

Id be interested if price was more reasonable got my stock spoiler painted for almost half hmm
|
holy fack 400 bux for an injection molded piece of plastic with some hardware on the back of it....
|
Im curious to know if the OEM BRZ vents can have the grey plastic sections cut out with an exacto knife and the metal screen glued on in its place. 400 dollars is a good amount of change for two fender vents that look oem except for an emblem and a metal screen.
Thanks for the DIY though. |

So I'm still trying to figure out how to post pix, but I snagged a set of these, and actually cut my fenders as well to make a functional vent. I've noticed a decent drop in over all temp on track days.

Great install thread.
I like how how it's pre-painted, and subtle change (big on stockish look things). Surprised for that price they couldn't have duplicated the factory mounting points, or have the double sided tape installed, or how you have to stick on the emblem yourself. |

You can upload them to a free hosting site like Photobucket, smugmug etc.. and then copy the .jpg link over here between 2 IMG tags so it will look like this: [IMG] PictureURL.JPG [/IMG] I would love to see pictures of the mods you did to make them functional, that is super cool! :) Quote:
Yeah they look amazing, and fit very well. I also wished they had replicated the OEM mounting, and they did to a degree, just with studs and nuts and not plastic clips. Also the OEM uses some double sided tape, but not as much as these Prova's, still very impressed with fit and finish :) Thanks, Rick |

Since I only needed the two original holes for the posts on the Prova vents, I used a thin blue painters tape, and just kept going trial-and-error of placing the tape right where I needed it by placing the vents in place, and looking through the mesh. I also used the old holes as guides to create a nice line for my tape. Then I used cutting discs and a Dremmel. I realize there are better tools that could be used, but it's what I've got, and it worked. |

I too modified the fender to make this functional. Overall impression is that the quality of the piece is good. Fitment is good, but could be just slightly better (tends to stick out a bit near the door). It's quite a bit 'whiter' than the rest of the car and has quite a bit less yellow in the paint, so the match isn't perfect. Overall I'm fairly happy. Painted the mesh black as well.

I agree with above poster. Fitment is good but don't expect 100. Do I regret buying? No. These are quality pieces and they look fabolous. Best looking fender trim I've seen to date. |
Would you be willing to sell the stock OEM fenders you took off? Let me know!

👍 nice DIY

It's better to paint the fender in black in the back of the grid before putting it. Especially for the white coloured cars, otherwise the original paint can be seen, and so it shows that they are false...

Cut my fenders too
1 Attachment(s)
Nervously took a stab at cutting my fenders too. Added some color to the grilles to match my painted emblems.
Used a $26 3" cut-off tool from Harbor Freight (get a pack of 40-grit discs) and my rotary Dremel with a small cut-off disc. Taped all around the fenders twice to protect from any accidental slippage. Put on long sleeves, eye protection, and gloves if you're going to do this; sparks will be flying everywhere. Also, I glued on some foam washers to the bolts that are on the emblems themselves. Figured this will keep the bolts from coming off, and they'll cushion the nuts when you tighten them. On the rear, I put down another foam washer, plus a steel fender washer on top, then the nut. The steel washer will spread out the tension all across the emblems when you tighten them down -- these things are never coming out now.... The vents definitely help the engine breathe, I can feel hot air coming out while the car is running. Attachment 88803 .ck |
