Borla EL (equal length) Header - Pics / Videos / Dynos - FT-86 SpeedFactory Review

Well, we couldn't just stop with the UEL Borla header. We had to do the EL Borla header for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, as well.

We got this in to test on our silver car to see which makes more torque. The EL or the UEL? We're headed to the dyno next week to get that sorted out, but for now we have pics. Video is being edited and will be up tomorrow. :)

After hearing both, I can tell you I am way more of an UEL fan.

It was a little rainy and cold yesterday so we didn't get a chance to do drive by's and others. As soon as the weather clears up we'll get those as well.

Looks like the flange isn't bent in that picture!

Interested to see if you get close results on the dyno than Borla did. Probably will since there's no change really in the secondaries length. If that's the case, UEL all the way.

did you have that problem too? i got mine and the flange was soo warped. called borla and they sent me a new one with no problems but still a pain in the ass to swap.

anybody else running the uel without anything else? i went with only the header until I can get money to finish the exhaust and it sounds absolutely awful. to the point that i'm putting the stock header back on until I can get at least a cat back.

I didn't have that problem, but I've read plenty of the stories about others that did in the UEL thread.

it sounds like a honda with a pep boys exhaust. the first time i drove it after the install i thought it had a leak because of the raspy sound. all the videos ive seen had a cat back also and the borla gave it that deep boxer rumble, which borlas are known for a good deep powerful sound. Its almost embarrassing when people check out my car and then i start driving and they hear a whining sound.

but my advice, don't go with just the header.. :barf:

sorry to be the debby downer haha

sweeney208 04-11-2013 07:01 PM

i took a video.. but gotta be honest I can not for the life of me figure out how to get it on here. the funny thing is that as I was taking it, a kid that knew my car when I bought it asked if I bottomed out because my car now sounds like "a honda with a fartcan"

anybody know how to get the video from my phone to here? tried to just upload it to the site from my phone but it says i cant do that. sorry lol

Which phone? Most androids can upload right to youtube.

Sniper2606 04-23-2013 01:56 AM

Just got my BRZ today, im going to do this setup after around 1k miles, but dealer said that i a tune will be needed if changing the headers?

It's not needed, but I'm VERY surprised a dealer said this. If I were you and the dealer said that, get it in writing that he's ok with it so you won't have any trouble from them if you get a tune. I would love to not worry about a tune voiding my warranty. Go for it.

And I really wanted to hear that. Like it was said, upload to YouTube then you can just put a link on the forums or something.

more info about the testing please... How many days between UEL and EL... was the ecu reset etc... Looks to me like the EL run has a few degrees of timing advance pulled out of it. Either that or the Borla El does not flow any better than stock.. so eliminating all other variables is key.

Probably about 30 days between testing very similar temperatures though. ECU was reset, drove on for about 600 miles, then dyno'd we did 9 pulls and all were very consistent with the one we choose to keep for the image as that was a good average benchmark.

Borla has similar results in their official testing that they did. Again different car, different conditions, different dyno, will yield different results. We used same car, same mods, same dyno so they should be within a reasonable margin of error a good comparison.

Opposed 04-24-2013 11:07 AM

Wow, very interesting. EL looks more like stock. Seems now the best set up is a good UEL and tune, or a long tube EL set up for curing the torque dip...

Long Tube EL ftw.

BRZ? 04-24-2013 04:54 PM

damn, i was expecting EL to make more power

We were too, but looks like the good sound goes with the good power in this case. Again sound is pure opinion but I love the UEL sound personally and it's better in this case.

industrial 04-25-2013 12:02 AM

Interesting that this comparison highlights how other EL headers that came on the market early and didn't make much power. Everyone kind of assumed headers were a lost cause for a while. Maybe there is some harmonics involved in short tube EL headers that this car hates.

Looks like UEL for the win all the way around here. You guys should do a UEL shootout if you ever get to distribute revworks and jdl.

FT-86 SpeedFactory 04-25-2013 12:15 AM

JDL is inbound for mid May testing. Revworks...still working on.

ramiram1984 04-25-2013 02:21 AM

I do like the UEL by Borla.

Why are headers like the P&L and FA20club considered long tube when headers like the Borla clearly have longer runners?

The difference is after the collector.

jimmer1290 04-07-2015 03:11 PM

Does the borla el or uel headers have a cat in them, I am looking at getting one of these for my car and do a greddy exhaust but I do not want to tune my car just yet. Is it possible to switch headers and not require a tuning?

They don't have CATs and you might get a CEL with no tune.
