What's high horsepower to you?
What number means Oh shit that's a lot of horsepower, to you?
700HP for me. |
Well... I suppose it's relative to the car.
Being from the Supra crowd, nothing really surprises me until its well into four figures like 1100hp or so... But even then, that depends on turbo and engine stats too... Stock bottom end, then when you hit 900whp, or so, then I am def. patting you on the back. at 1200whp, I am shaking your hand vigorously and asking for a ride... |
600 and above. once a car hits that, its: why? because racecar, Alfred, thats why.
|
About 200 hp and 151 lbs-ft torque seems pretty crazy to me.
|
An everyday car about 600 HP. A sports car about 800-900 HP. But imagine how much gas the car would consume...
|
400whp. Even at in a 4000lb bloatmobile, that's hauling ass. Is it STUPID fast? No. It's more than you'd ever need in a DD situation, that's for sure.
|
1400HP Stage 5 turbo.
Is a bit insane. |
400WHP+ is pretty quick in my mind once you break 600 i think thats fast.
|
I've been for a ride but never driven in a four digit Supra, but on its street map. 'Only' a touch over 700 whp. Suprised the living shit out of a liter bike. (Older gen R1?)Completely terrifying and virtually unusable on the street. Too much for me.
Currently my Supra has a turbo good for 400 whp, but I need a fuel pump, standalone and tune to crank up the boost. Will be plenty fast enough. I may shoot for low lag 500 whp target eventually as I've ridden in a nicely set up 560 whp car and it was way more street friendly than the big turbo one. |
It's relative...220HP is a scary number, on a motorcycle, especially one that isn't all stretched and stupid like so many Hayabusa's and ZX14's. I had that in a 2009 Honda CBR1000RR, there were no cars that could touch it up to 180mph+ on the road. For cars it's even more relative, 1000HP is generally held as "extreme" but I still think the most extreme feeling car I have driven is the new CTS-V coupe...maybe because it fools you into thinking it's somewhat refined and then goes about raping your sensibilities and perception of what a luxury car is. I've driven a bunch of Ferrari's and Porsche's, and a few GT-R's and Viper's, a couple 700HP+ Supra's, etc. but the CTS-V Coupe was the one that felt ridiculous.
Now if I could just line up a little alone time with a C63 Black Series, then maybe that would get the crown ;) |
imo over 600 is a lot but to make me go WOW it is anything north of 999+
|
Like everyone else I think it depends on the car. Bigger muscle cars 400hp does not seem shocking I think once you break 600-650 its the holy crap factor. On a sports cars 375-400 is my wow point.
|
Depends on the weight of the car.
Look back a decade or two and 500-600 is crazy. Now, supercars are breaking 1000 HP. That's a production car. For me my slightly nodded Evo VII was a lot and that was probably a bit less that 300 at the wheels. 600 and beyond is what I'd consider crazy high. |
400 daily driven
|
I'd say 500+. More than that, and you just fishtail everywhere.
|
Im going to agree with the others here and say its about weight
Tuner/Import--north of 300 is alot Musclecar--north of 500 super/hypercar--800 or more Saiyan--above 9000 |
Its relative. Once a factory engine makes over 400hp I think its considered potent.
|
As a general statement upwards of 700 for me is when things get crazy.
But as a not so general statement it depends entirely on weight, 400-500HP can feel ridiculous in car that's sub 3000lbs or even more crazy if it's sub 2500lbs. |
If we're just talking about the engine, anything north of 600 hp I'd consider pretty impressive.
If we're talking about speed, it's relative to weight for me. Anything under 6.00 lbs/hp is pretty damn impressive. |
42
Edit: 1 internetz to whomever gets that. |

I'd like to take into consider the size of the tire, weight of the car and amount of downforce.
300hp in a CRX is a LOT of power but 300hp in an Indy Car is not. I think when a certain amount of HP reaches the "whoa" factor for me is directly proportional to much power in excess of what the car/tires can handle exists. I've been in a 250hp CRX on a track and thought, "Holy crap this thing is fast!" Then I was in a 500hp Corvette, going several MPH faster than said CRX, and felt like I was on a Sunday drive. The Corvette was LOTS faster but didn't feel like it. mmmm, isn't relativity fun. |

Hmmm well.....~400 out of the tC, guess u get used to it when i made the jump of about 140 HP it was a wow factor....what happened to first and second? dammit.....
Id say now that it does indeed have to do with the p/w ratio. Im thinking a 600 will put my butt into a pucker real quick! |
In the BR-Z/FR-S? 300/350 would be perfect, 500-600 is "oh shit" territory. In something like a Lotus, 400 is approaching that territory, but in a bigger sports car, 700 is getting up there.
|
My 85 GTI had around 100 horse and was fun to drive. Same era Corolla GTS had approx. 115 and was peppier. Fast forward to the present and there is a 1400 HP Supra dynod on YouTube.
All things relative I guess. My 08 Accord had 268 HP and the most any of my cars has had. If I were to get another vehicle with 400 plus ponies like a Mustang GT that would seem like a lot to me. |
550 and up is where i start saying DAMN
|
Completely depends on the car.
But just off the top of my head, four digits. |
Yeah, depends on the car. I'm around the 350whp mark in my 4g eclipse (before rebuild) and it is fun but definitely more a gt/road course car.
I can look at cars like a supra with 900whp and not be overly impressed because its the exact same build, maybe with a different brand name as all the others; likely is also just a dyno queen. Hp is nothing without being a standout, it's about the full package for me on a car. |
87,342rwhp would be alot

..and you think it would fit in my engine bay? |

The fastest car I've ever driven was a Stock 2010 WRX was fast enough for sure... so IMO 400ish would be a lot.
|
In all seriousness, 200 is high for me since my Mazda only had 130 and that was the fastest car I owned before the FR-S. But aside from that I would think it was subjective. It would really depend on the size of the car. 400HP might be a lot in a little car, and not enough in some big SUV or truck. I will say looking at the various 911 models that most of them seem like they have too much. They barely weigh more than the FR-S and more than double the HP.
Don't get me wrong, it sounds pretty cool. Just seems high to someone like me. |
As others have said it all depends on the car
Fastest cars I have driven are a Ferrari 430 Scuderia 16M and a 700hp Shebly GT500 convertible |
